KANDER, Gerhard
While vacationing in Jamaica, Gerhard KANDER passed away at 7 a.m. on January 1, 2008. He celebrated New Year's Eve with his wife Dr. Claire BOMBARDIER, her sister Hélène BOMBARDIER and niece Myriam RICHER, at midnight they wished each other Happy New Year and he never woke up in the morning. Gerhard was born in Germany on August 27, 1921 an only child; he became a professional violin soloist at age 13. In 1939 he escaped to England but his parents never made it. The 'camp boys' (other Jewish refugees) became his family. In Canada, he had the good fortune of being adopted by a wonderful and generous Toronto family: Mr. Kaspar FRASER (founder of Fraser and Beatty law firm, now Fraser, Milner, Casgrain) and his wife Lois McPHEDRAN. He eventually became an investment advisor (recently with CIBC World Markets) but continued to play the violin every day of his life. Visitation will be held at their home on Saturday, January 5th, Sunday, January 6th and Monday, January 7th between the hours of 4-7 p.m.: 18 Strathearn Boulevard in Forest Hill (Spadina Road and St. Clair Avenue West area). A memorial service will be arranged at a later date. Passed away quietly at home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 a day short of his 91st birthday. Born March 19, 1917 in Ottawa, he spent most of his life in Toronto, Ottawa and Stroud, Ontario. Harvey received his education at the University of Toronto and after graduating in Electrical Engineering in 1940 he joined Ontario Hydro. He was a licensed Ham Radio operator at the time. As a Commissioned Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force he was involved with a special radar unit attached to the Royal Marines during World War 2. He continued working at Ontario Hydro after the war and then joined Motorola where he spent the rest of his career and retired to Stroud, Ontario with his wife Dorothy (predeceased). Harvey will be lovingly remembered by his family, son Doctor Lloyd REID and wife Lynda, son James REID, daughter Catherine DOTY and husband Lance, daughter Susan RICHES and husband Jeff. He cherished his grandchildren Heather PAPADOGIANIS, Ken REID, Suzanne EAGLESON, Ian DOTY, Emily DOTY, Alan RICHES and Mark RICHES and great-grandchildren Bronwyn, Elise and Katie PAPADOGIANIS, and Kassidy and Hunter EAGLESON. Londoner helped map kids' studies
University of Western Ontario professor's lifetime works would fill a book.

A Londoner who put Canada on the map for millions of school kids has died.
Edward Gustav PLEVA, a father of Canadian geography and Ontario's conservation movement, was 95.
His accomplishments would fill a book. But his biggest influence may have been as editor of The Canadian Oxford School Atlas, shown at right. The yellow- and black-covered collection of maps was common on school desks across Canada from 1957 on.
"People of my generation all grew up with the atlas," said David STOVER, president of the Oxford University Press.
"I would think there are millions of them in print."
PLEVA was editor for the first three editions. Coming up to its ninth printing, the atlas remains Oxford's biggest seller of all time in Canada, STOVER said.
"He never took a penny for it" said Dan SHRUBSOLE, head of the University of Western Ontario's geography department.
PLEVA also helped to create Ontario's conservation authorities, established the geography department at University of Western Ontario and played a lead role in developing the geography curriculum for millions of Ontario school children.
"He had a very significant impact in geography and resource management in Canada," SHRUBSOLE said.
Yet, PLEVA was a "very humble man, very committed to people," SHRUBSOLE added.
A consummate educator, whose name adorns the top award for teachers at University of Western Ontario, and a planner who helped shape the London region, PLEVA lived what he preached, a love of the geographic world.
"He loved camping and hiking, photography and baseball," SHRUBSOLE said.
His love of the outdoors grew naturally from his birthplace, Minnesota.
PLEVA was born May 12, 1912, and earned three degrees -- a bachelor's, a master's and a doctorate in geography -- from the University of Minnesota.
In 1938, Western hired the 26-year-old to teach and establish its geography program.
The Second World War interrupted the plan, when PLEVA served at the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, D.C.
Even so, PLEVA found time in 1941 to sit on the committee that developed Ontario's conservation authorities.
At the time, the province was losing its forests to over-exploitation and drought, SHRUBSOLE said.
"The landscape in Ontario was deteriorating."
The government also wanted to find work for veterans who would return after the war.
The result was the 1946 Conservation Act and the 35 conservation authorities that protect Ontario's landscape today.
By 1948, PLEVA had Western's geography department up and running and served as head for 20 years. He retired from teaching in "He was just a great teacher," SHRUBSOLE said.
After his retirement, PLEVA continued to teach some first-year courses.
Graduate students would fill the lecture hall just to hear him speak again, SHRUBSOLE said. "He must have put on quite a show."
So good a teacher was he, that University of Western Ontario named its annual award for teaching excellence the Edward G. Pleva Award.
While teaching, PLEVA found time to chair and sit on several city, regional and neighbourhood planning committees and boards and become the first editor of The Canadian Geographer journal, still published.
In 1969, London honoured PLEVA as "one of Canada's distinguished geographers" and awarded him the Distinguished Community Service Award.
PLEVA died February 7.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Grace and leaves behind sons James of Guelph and Michael of London.
His funeral is Thursday at 2 p.m. at the James A. Harris Funeral Home in London.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Salomon 'Saul' (Charyski) HARRIS of Saint John, New Brunswick, husband of 58 years to Lillian (Zatzman) HARRIS which occurred on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at Saint_Joseph's Hospital after a lengthy illness with Alzheimers. Born in Szopianice, Poland, he was a son of the late, Myer and Deena CHARYSKI and seven siblings. After surviving three concentration camps, Skarsysko, Czestochewa and Buchenwald in Poland from 1942-1945, he moved to Saint John, where he owned and operated Harris Men's Wear on Union Street for over thirty years. Saul was an active member of Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. He enjoyed watching wrestling, playing cards and enjoyed taking walks around the uptown area of Saint John. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters; Deena HARRIS- PEISER (Tomas) of Rothesay, New Brunswick and Paula POWER (Michael) of Saint John, two grandchildren; Brent PEISER and Jeremy POWER, his sister-in-law, Sophie (Sandler) RICHMOND of Toronto, Ontario, as well as several nieces and nephews. After a courageous fight against melanoma, Geoff passed away at Princess Margaret Hospital on Thursday May 15, 2008 at the age of 53. Loving husband of 20 years to Maureen and proud father of Geoffrey and Graham. Geoff also leaves behind his mother Mary RICHMOND (John RICHMOND,) father Patrick PLANT, sisters Julia (Gilles OUELLETTE) and Peggy (Martin GUEST.) He will be deeply missed by the Graham Family and his many nieces and nephews. After several years in the Canadian investment industry, Geoff moved to London, England in 1988 and established not only a substantial network of clients, but a host of lasting Friendships. The family moved back to Toronto in 1998. Four years ago, Geoff founded the investment company Fraser Mackenzie Limited. Geoff will be remembered for many things… his integrity, reliability, honesty, individuality and love of his family. He was a gentleman. Passed away at Etobicoke General Hospital on Thursday March 13, 2008 after a brief illness. David FAULKES, dearly beloved husband of Margaret FAULKES (née STRACHAN.) Dear father of Susan HALLETT and Janice and her husband Fred RICHMOND. Loving grandfather of Jennifer (Steve), Erin, Lorraine (Jonas), David and Andrea and great-grandfather of Kaitlin, Carley, Natalie and Russell. She was the youngest child of Archibald and Minnie (MacGILLIVRAY) RICKARDS and outlived her siblings Thelma, Jack, Dorothy and George. She is survived by her nephew John RICKARDS of Oakville and her niece Elizabeth HILLIAR of Ottawa. A memorial gathering and the interment of ashes will be held at a future date.
