John Elwin
WILSON passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, February 13,
2008 at the Shelburne Nursing Home. Elwin was born in Melancthon
Township on May 21, 1928. He was the second
son of George and
Florence (PALLISTER)
WILSON. He was predeceased by his two brothers
Mervyn and Everett. Elwin grew up on the family farm and got
his education at Maybourne School.
Elwin married June
(ACHESON)
WILSON on Wednesday, June 27, 1951,
the 33rd Wedding Anniversary of June's parents Stanley and Olive
(McMILLAN)
ACHESON.
Their marriage took place at Bethel United
Church.
Elwin began a career of trucking gravel in the cities of Brampton
and Toronto shortly after their marriage and continued that career
for 46 years until his retirement at the age of 71.
Elwin and June were the parents of Cathy
WILSON,
Nancy
(WILSON)
KEATING, Lisa
(WILSON)
LANGERAAP and Phillip
WILSON. Elwin is
predeceased by his daughters Cathy and Nancy, who both passed
away from Leukemia.
After raising their children in Dundalk, Elwin and June built
their home on property adjacent to the family farm where June
was raised on the West Backline. They resided there for fifteen
years, before moving into a new home in Dundalk in 2002. Elwin
had a great interest and involvement in the betterment of his
community. He was President of the Dundalk Service Club and when
his health failed and he was no longer as active as he would
like to have been, he was appointed the first Honorary Usher
for Dundalk United Church.
Elwin took great pride and interest in his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and their great-grandchildren and their activities.
He loved to watch hockey games, figure skating, attend baptisms,
weddings and graduation ceremonies for his grandchildren. He
Will be very much missed by them.
Elwin's failing health forced him to spend numerous periods of
time in Markdale Hospital due to complications from diabetes
and hip surgery. It was troubling for his family to come to the
realization that his care should be specialized and Elwin became
a resident at Shelburne Nursing Home for the past three years.
The onset of Alzheimer's disease may have robbed him of his memory,
but it never took away his sense of humour. As aptly described
by his nephew Ted
ACHESON, "
His last few years were more like
living in a waiting room to eternity. All believers can take
comfort that he is now with his Lord and Saviour just as it has
been foretold."
A Celebration of Elwin's life was held on February 16, 2098 at
the McMillan and Jack Funeral Home, Dundalk. Dundalk United Church
minister; Rev. Janet Eriksen and organist Mary Nicholls participated
in the service. Nephew Ted
ACHESON gave the Eulogy and all of
Elwin's ten nephews were pallbearers. His nieces sang a beautiful
"Gaelic
Blessing" accompanied by his sister-in-law Doreen
(ACHESON)
PORTER.
Elwin's grandchildren were flowerbearers. Spring interment
will be in Bethel Cemetery.

and mother Emiline
PORTER from Keene, Ontario, her extraordinary
life began February 10, 1911 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Her
childhood was spent in France, Germany, Mexico, Canada and New
Zealand; she spoke 4 languages by the age of ten. She began playing
the cello at age 9, later obtaining an M.A. in Music at Mills
College, Berkeley. Her orchestral career included the Victoria
Symphony in the 1950's (principal cello), Toronto Symphony 1961-70
(assistant principal cello), and Orchestra London 1970-79 (principal
cello) while husband Clifford
EVENS was music director. She was
also on the faculty of University of Western Ontario. In the
1980's she played with the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra
and Canadian Opera Company Orchestra In addition, she enjoyed
playing in numerous chamber music groups throughout her long
career. She earned the love and respect of colleagues wherever
she played. Her passion for music was matched by her passion
for life - she lived it to the fullest. Always positive and younger
than her years, she was open to new adventures, whether they
be travelling the world, horse backpacking, or trying water-skiing
in her 70's.
Uncomplaining, she faced the challenges of her life with courage,
strength, determination and humour. Her extensive far-flung family
was vitally important to her. In turn, her warmth and selflessness
endeared her to family and Friends, who often sought her wise
advice. Her influence on succeeding generations is profound.

Mary EVENS: 96
Cellist Played In Concerts, And For Ballet And Opera
By Tom HAWTHORN,
Page
S10
Victoria -- Mary
EVENS, a cellist who performed with symphony
orchestras across the land during a long career, has died in
Victoria. She was 96.
Her orchestral résumé included the Victoria Symphony as principal
cello in the 1950s, after which she joined the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra as assistant principal cello from 1961 to 1970. She
was then principal cello for London Symphony Orchestra (now Orchestra
London) until 1979. At each of these she was joined by her husband,
Clifford EVENS, a violinist and conductor.
Mary Edith
BUCKLIN was born on February 10, 1911, at Guatemala
City,
Guatemala, where her father, George Augustus
BUCKLIN,
Jr.,▲
was the American consul-general. Her mother, the former Emiline
PORTER, hailed from Keene, Ontario, near Peterborough. Mr.
BUCKLIN
later served as a consul at Victoria, during which time his daughter
won the gold medal for excellence in solo performance at the
1929 Victoria music festival.
Her childhood education owed more to Baedeker than to the ABCs,
as she lived in France, Germany, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand.
She spoke four languages by age 10, by which time she had already
taken up the stringed instrument that would be her lifelong avocation
as well as passion. She studied in London; Paris; Koblenz, Germany
and in Seattle, Washington. Among her instructors was Kurt Reher,
familiar to longhairs of a later age for having recorded with
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
She earned a master's degree in music at Mills College at Berkeley,
California., and later held a position on the faculty of the
University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario
After her husband's death in 1980, she played with the National
Ballet of Canada Orchestra, as well as the Canadian Opera Company
Orchestra.
Among her former pupils is Christopher
SHARPE, who is the associate
principal cello for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
Mrs. EVENS died on December 23. She leaves a son, two daughters,
five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased
by husbands Reginald Ellery Percy
HAMMOND and Clifford Wallis
EVENS.
She was also predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

McCUTCHEON,
Susan
Our beloved Susan passed away on April 10, 2008, at age 69, in
London, England, after a recurrence of melanoma. She was surrounded
by daughters Susan-Eva and Jessica
PORTER, beloved husband Bob
BENJAFIELD, and Bob's family. Susan spent the last few months
of her life enveloped in the love of her family and many Friends,
providing strength and courage to all. Susan was the daughter
of the late Eva and Wallace
McCUTCHEON of Toronto, and sister
of James, Frederick, Douglas and the late Barbara
McCUTCHEON.
She is survived by three generations of the
McCUTCHEON and Porter
families in Canada; by step children Richard and Jackie
BENJAFIELD
and their spouses; and step-grandchildren Samuel, Robin and Rueben
BENJAFIELD of Guilford, England. Susan was a teacher by training
and spent many years involved in the health care and social services
community in Toronto. As one friend noted, she was a tireless
spokesperson for the rights of women. Susan was Chairman of Women's
College Hospital from 1985 to 1988 and served on the Royal Commission
for New Reproductive Technology during the early 1990s. She was
actively involved and committed to the Palliative Care Foundation
and the Childbirth Education Association, and she also served
for a time on the boards of Jessie's Centre and the Toronto Zoo.
Susan moved to England permanently in 1994 to be with her husband
Bob, living first in Cornwall and then in Wimbledon, where she
and Bob created a life full of music, travel, happy companionship,
and hospitality. She spent her final years devoting her energy
to mentoring members of a spiritual fellowship, which gave her
a profound sense of purpose and meaning. Throughout her life
she loved others as they loved her, with compassion, kindness,
and fidelity. Her greatest legacy was her capacity for abiding
Friendship, and thus she will be mourned and missed by many.
A memorial service in celebration of Susan's life will be held
in Toronto in mid-May, details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites Susan's Friends to make
anonymous donations to charities of their choice.

WILSON,
John▲▼
Passed away in Ottawa on Wednesday June 25th, 2008 at the age
of 88.
Although I was born on December 21, 1919, life for me really
began when I met and married my late wife, the Honourable Bertha
WILSON, and ended when she died on April 28th, 2007. Since that
time life has been kind of a shadowland, punctuated with memories
of a wonderful partnership, where we shared joys and sorrows,
disappointments and triumphs. In the years of our earthly pilgrimage
we have met and enjoyed the Friendship of some very fine people,
and discovered unique acquaintances in surprisingly unexpected
places. Our declining and final years were enlightened and sustained
by the devotion of two loyal and exceptional caregivers: Beverly
EDWARDS and Sherlyn
PORTER. My funeral arrangements are private
and after cremation my ashes will be deposited in Beechwood Cemetery.

MADSEN,
Belle
Noreen
(July 4th, 1914-March 8th, 2008)
It is with great sadness that Belle
MADSEN in her 94th year passed
away suddenly at Southlake Regional Health facility in Newmarket,
Ontario, on Saturday morning, March 8th. Belle
MADSEN departed
from this life surrounded by her loving and devoted family, daughters
Marcia (Jim
PAERG,)
Stephanie
(John
BEAUPRE) and sons Malcom
and Rocky (Bridgitte
LINNANE.)
Grandmother of Steven
BOWLES,
Jamie BEAUPRE, Luke
BEAUPRE, Brooke
MULLINS and Adam
MADSEN.
Belle is also a great-grandmother to Robert
BOWLES and Lone
MULLINS.
Belle was a beautiful, elegant, strong and vibrant self-reliant
woman. Among other duties of charity work was also the past President
of the Mining Woman's Association. Wife of the late Marius K.
MADSEN president and owner of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Superior
Sand and Gravel, Honey Pot Ski Resort and the Casa Marie Hotel
in Jamaica. Belle
MADSEN was a consistent source of energy and
whether she was involved in running one of the many companies
owned by our late father or hosting a birthday party she was
always on the go. Toward the end of her life, Belle became passionate
about playing card games. It was truly remarkable how sharp her
mind was right until the end. Belle also leaves behind two very
dear sisters: Jane
SWAIN and
Jo PORTER who will miss her persistent
mothering as she was the older sister and always let them know
that. As we say farewell to this generous, loving and energetic
woman we are reminded of just how many people's lives she has
touched. She was a matriarch and definitely stood out in a crowd
and as everyone she knew would tell you, she never had a problem
speaking her mind, you could never go wrong having her in your
corner. Although it has been so hard and sad to have had to see
her leave this life, she is at peace at last. Reconnecting with
our father and brother, Dana who died much too young. We miss
you so much mom and know we speak for so many others that have
been touched by your entrance into their lives. One day we will
all see you again and until then keep playing cards& you owe
us a game! Friends may call at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge
St. (2 lights south of Steeles). A funeral service will be held
on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 1 p.m. in our chapel. Cremation
to follow.
