Passed away peacefully June 1, 2008 in Barrie, Ontario. The daughter
of William and Irene
ANDREWS,
Irene was born November 27, 1914
in Ottawa, Ontario. She was the eldest of six children and sister
to Doris, Willa, Norma, Billy and Joan. On October 26, 1940,
Irene wed George Stanley
HOWARD of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police in Quebec City. In 1948, they moved from their Ottawa
home to Toronto's suburban Etobicoke where they raised three
children, John Andrew

Irene worked several years for the Ottawa Journal.
Later in Toronto's Kingsway area, she operated a Bloor Street
antique shop and then became manager and buyer for The Carriage
Trade women's store, a role which spanned decades. George and
Irene are survived by their three children, eight grandchildren,
Geordie, Lyndsay, Samantha, Katherine, Smith, Ali, Heather and
John and by three great-grandchildren, Lucy, Charlie and Cameron.
After 56 years of marriage, Irene lost George September 9, 1996.
They will be reunited at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery in Oakville,
Ontario. Irene's life will be celebrated June 22 in the company
of family and Friends at a private residence in Barrie. In memory

PHIPPS.
She▼ was predeceased by her husband Cart in 1995, and
is survived by their son Daryl, of Victoria, by her sister Pat
HAMILTON, of Halifax, and by her nephew and his family, Jim,
Jeanne, and Melissa
HAMILTON, of Newmarket, Ontario. Raised in
the Point Grey-Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, Valerie
PHIPPS graduated from Lord Byng High School, and went on to complete
her teacher training at the British Columbia Provincial Normal
School. For five years she went north to teach at Kingcome Inlet,
Vanderhoof, and Fort Saint_James before returning to Vancouver,
where she taught at Prince of Wales School until marrying. The
family moved to Victoria in 1964. An active member of the Imperial
Order of the Daughters of the Empire throughout her adult life,
she was Regent of the University Chapter in Vancouver and the
Martlet Chapter in Victoria, and served in many national and
provincial offices. She played tennis and badminton in her younger
days, and keenly followed Wimbledon, the French Open, and other
tournaments all her life. Bridge, crafts, and gardening were
her favourite pastimes in later years, and she came to know many
of her Friends across the bridge table or in workshops making
Christmas decorations. An elegant lady with a fine sense of humour,
she is especially remembered at the Victoria Golf Club in Oak
Bay and
at St. George's Church in Cadboro Bay. The family are
deeply indebted to the staff of Glenwarren Lodge for the loving
and compassionate care Valerie received in her last years. Donations
in her memory, if desired, should be made to the Greater Victoria
Eldercare Foundation (1450 Hillside Avenue, Victoria, British
Columbia, V8T 2B7) or the charity of one's choice. No service
