MARTYN,
Ian
Dales
Husband, father, friend, lover of life. Born December 16, 1923,
in North Bay. Died July 31, 2007, in Mississauga of heart failure,
aged 83.
By John MARTYN,
Page L6
Ian almost died at age 3 when his appendix burst, but he inherited
a great resilience from his mother, Elizabeth
DALES, who lived
to 96.
Dad used to tell us that his large scar from the operation was
from a sword fight during the war. He had a hard time explaining
that once my sister and I learned more about the war. He had
served as a navigator in a Halifax bomber in the Royal Canadian
Air Force.
His father, Ian Clarence, ran Martyn Funeral Home in North Bay.
Dad ran the business for a short time when his father was ill,
then received his master's degree in psychology from the University
of Western Ontario in London, where he met the love of his life,
Dorothy PERDUE.
They were married in Oakville, Ontario, on June 23,
Ian loved his family, his Friends, his countless hobbies and
his occupation as an industrial psychologist. He worked for most
of his career at Hickling-Johnston Ltd. in Toronto following
our move from Montreal in 1966. His peers respected his ability
to understand what made people tick and to identify the right
candidate for a position.
Ian loved to do just about everything - gardening, sports, fishing,
hunting, telling you about a book he was reading, a new psychological
inventory he was using, or playing a game of cards. He taught
me about the value and rewards of hard work and was a great father
and friend. We could spend a day landscaping, hunting or fishing
and barely say a word for hours at a time - we just enjoyed each
other's company.
My sister Jennifer had a steady stream of boyfriends during her
university years at Western. Dad would take them on fishing trips
where the only access was by old logging roads and portages that
were difficult to find. All of these relationships broke up shortly
after the trips. Jen did not allow her husband to join us on
an adventure until after they were married.
Ian and Dorothy were a fantastic team. They held many parties
and gatherings at their home and at "Ian's Island." This was
Ian's favourite place in the world, an islet he inherited from
his grandparents on Trout Lake, just east of North Bay. He left
a priceless legacy to his family and a physical footprint on
the earth.
Fortunately, Ian left us only after spending a great month on
his island. He had visits from many Friends and family, gardened,
made breakfast for his guests and managed to play 18 holes of
golf, which he had not been able to do for more than a year.
The last thing I heard my father say, about six hours before
he passed away, was to my mom: "You're beautiful and I love you,"
he said, and gave her a kiss.
John MARTYN is Ian's son.
