BOYD, Richard Norman, M.D., F.R.C.S.
(June 5, 1944-March 29, 2008)
It is with overwhelming grief that the family of Doctor Richard BOYD announces his death at age 63 on Saturday, March 29, 2008 after a heart attack and a stroke. Rick took his last breath held lovingly by his family and close Friends Doctor Frank DEMARCO and Doctor Tom ELSDON. Rick deeply loved, and was loved by, his wife of nearly 40 years, Jane (JOHNSTON,) and cherished his sons David Richard and Andrew Macartney. Rick adored his beautiful 'daughters' Kristen (SKINNER) and Lindsay (GRAY/GREY.) He was predeceased by his loving parents Doctor Norman and Barbara BOYD, and father-in-law Robert 'Mac' JOHNSTON. He will be profoundly missed by his mother-in-law Olive JOHNSTON. Left to mourn are his sisters Judy MANNING, Mary HOPKINS (Ed DAVEY) and Heather MUNRO (Bob,) his aunt Dorothy SEARLE, brother and sister-in-laws Dick and Jane JOHNSTON, cousins, nieces and nephews, and a legion of Friends. He was predeceased by his loyal Bichon Frises, Bijoux and Beaumont. Doctor BOYD graduated from the University Of Western Ontario Medical School in 1968. He obtained his Specialist Fellowship in Urology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1976, and has since then practiced Urological Surgery in Windsor. He previously served as Chief of Surgery, and was currently head of Urology, at the Windsor Regional Hospital. He was one of the founders of the prostate cancer Bracytherapy programme at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre. In recent years he has also served the community as a Provincial Coroner for Essex County. Rick was a member of the Alpha Kappa Kappa medical fraternity. An athlete, Rick ran 27 marathons around the world with a personal best of 2: 48 in Chicago. He curled in the Ontario Medical Association bonspiels, and was an avid golfer and scholar of golf history. He was a member of the Donald Ross Society. He was currently the very proud President of Essex Golf and Country Club. Rick was a skilled clinician and diagnostician, and a gentle man who exhibited great kindness to his patients. He had twinkling blue eyes, a mischievous smile and a wonderfully wicked sense of humour. Rick's prize orchids are especially beautiful this spring. Our family thanks the medical community, both doctors and nurses, who supported Rick in area hospitals over the years, and especially Ruth Anne PIETTE and Staci LEMIEUX who loyally kept his office organized in spite of him. We thank the doctors and nurses at Windsor Regional and Hotel Dieu Grace Hospitals who so valiantly tried to save him: Doctor Rob WOODALL, Doctor Anthony GLANZ, Doctor Hash PATEL, Doctor Natalie MALUS and Doctor Balraj JHAWAR, who over five difficult days demonstrated extraordinary skill, as well as great compassion and love to our family. Thank you to Carol DERBYSHIRE and Steve BRENNAN from the Hospice of Windsor; Pat BEST, Paula DEEHAN- SCHMIDT and Chaplain Joyce JARDIN from Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital; Kim VAN ALLEN and Bishop Bob BENNETT from All Saints' Church; and our community for enveloping our family in love and prayers as we ran with Rick on his last marathon. Always one to put others first, and ever the healer, Rick has made four gifts of life. His two corneas will go to enhance sight, and, ironically the "perfect urologist kidneys" will give life and hope to two patients. In order to give back to our community which Rick so loved, we ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to organizations that were so a part of his life: Hospice of Windsor for care of men with prostate cancer; All Saints' Anglican Church; Windsor Regional Hospital for a Cystoscopy suite; Windsor Regional Cancer Centre for the Prostate Brachytherapy Program; and Essex Golf and Country Club for a croquet pitch and garden in his name. Visiting will be held at the Walter D. Kelly Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 1969 Wyandotte St. E. On Monday and Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at All Saints' Anglican Church, 330 City Hall Square on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 11: 00 a.m. Cremation to follow. CALICH, John (1928-2008)
John passed away on June 18th, peacefully and with his family by his side, as a result of cancer and heart failure. Beloved husband to Anita. Loving father to Norma (Bill), Mike (Adriane) and Rick. Dear Grandpa to Joel, Dean, Marta, Hannah and Andrew. John was a devoted family man who worked hard and lived simply, with honesty and integrity. Throughout his life, John worked with his hands. After many years in the sheet metal and air balance industries, he dedicated himself to a career as a self-taught craftsman and became renowned for his fine hand made briar pipes, which are treasured by collectors throughout the world. John will be remembered by those who knew him best, for his love of family, his talent, modesty, independent spirit, and especially his wry sense of humour. Telemarketers may now rest easier, knowing that John will no longer be answering the phone. The family wishes to most sincerely thank the many dedicated physicians, nurses and others who have treated John, including most recently Drs. 'She was just a bright star full of life'
By Jenni DUNNING, Wed., June 25, 2008
Shelby GOLDIE couldn't stay there for long.
She surveyed the accident scene -- broken CDs and strewn belongings that had flown out of the car her friend Christie ROSE drove before it went out of control, flipped and smashed into a tree. She died later of her injuries.
GOLDIE was one of 10 people to congregate at the site on Fingal Line between Centre and Oneida roads Monday night, looking for answers to Saturday's crash.
"No one really knows what happened. We tried to observe and put the pieces of the puzzle together," she said. "We got an eerie feeling and had to leave."
ROSE, 18, of Fingal, was a popular student at Parkside Collegiate Institute in Saint Thomas and a forward for the London Devilettes intermediate AA hockey team.
She'll be remembered as a strong-willed, funny person, Friends said.
"Through it all, everyone was like, 'She's a fighter. She's so strong,'" said friend and teammate Brittany PATON, 21.
PATON said she would need a dictionary to describe how wonderful her friend was. "She was the kind of person you met and wanted to be Friends with right away. She made you feel good about yourself."
PATON said ROSE loved working out and doing impressions of actors in her favourite movies, such as She's the Manitoba
In their last conversation, she said, ROSE talked about how happy she was and about plans for after graduation.
She said she's in shock her friend is gone. "You don't want to believe it. It's kind of an emotional roller coaster."
ROSE's school and community are reeling from the crash. About 200 people visited Parkside for a memorial yesterday to share memories and photographs.
"She was just a bright star full of life and will be missed by anyone who was blessed to have known her," said principal Paul McKENZIE.
"I'm sure it's every parent's worst nightmare. It's every principal's, as well."
ROSE is survived by her parents, Melanie Ann (SNOWSELL) and Dan, brother Joseph and sister Lauren.
Visitation is at Parkside on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral is at the school Saturday at 11: 30 a.m.

BAINE, Eleanor (neé LUCAS) (1910-2008)
Died peacefully one week short of her 98th birthday in her home in Toronto. Eleanor was the second daughter of Gavin Allen and Maude LUCAS (neé PATON.) She was educated at Toronto Teachers College and taught elementary school in Markham. Mother grew up in Lindsay spending summers at Sturgeon Point travelling there by boat before there was road access and enjoying life long Friendships from those years. Later summers were spent on Tobacco Lake on Manitoulin Island which fostered Friendships that have endured to this day. With her husband Jack she raised her family in Guelph and Toronto. Eleanor volunteered with the Red Cross during the war, was a member with the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, and was a longtime volunteer at the Wellesley Hospital where she produced many beautiful and coveted Teddy Bears for the shop. We feel extremely blessed to have had Mother in our lives for so long. She was a remarkable woman with an acute intelligence and an amazing vocabulary - the result of doing the Globe and Mail Cryptic Crossword in ink for many years until a few weeks before her death. Her knowledge of the rules of grammar and punctuation were formidable. She always read the Globe and Mail and enjoyed discussing the issues of the day. Eleanor was predeceased by her devoted husband Captain John A. BAINE (Jack) in 1996. Survived by her children Beverley HARRISON, Barbara HINDSON (Robert) and John BAINE. She leaves three grandchildren - Amy GOLBERG (Cam,) Kiera HINDSON and Robin HINDSON and two great-grandchildren Grace and Madison. Mother leaves behind many people who will miss her dearly as she was an inspiration and example to us all. Cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be held in Rosedale Presbyterian Church, 129 Mount Pleasant Road (corner of South Drive) on Wednesday, April 2nd at 2 p.m. Reception will follow at the Church. Internment will take place later in the summer at Gordon Cemetery Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island. The family wishes to thank Caregivers Unlimited for their unfailing compassionate care of our Mother. They were always there when we needed them. We also wish to thank the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative Care Team of Mount Sinai Hospital. If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Gore Bay Museum, Gore Bay, Ontario P0P 1H0 or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, P.O. Box 26323, Station Brm, Toronto, Ontario M7Y 4R1.
