EADIE--In loving memory of Johnny Eadie, 1916 - 1943.
The ballad of Johnny Eadie
It was on a winter’s day when Johnny Eadie sailed away
To old England far across the deep blue sea.
And his heart was gay and light to be in the freedom fight,
This young Canadian who had dreams of victory.
‘Cause in time they were to come against the foe.
And as he marched he had good faith in the famous forty-eighth,
Those brave highlanders of Canada’s pride and show.
Refrain
Oh, Johnny Eadie we salute you
You’re just one who helped to see we did not fall,
And our courage and great endurance
Will forever be remembered by us all.
In the year of forty-three, on the isle of Sicily
This lad, he fell for his dear Canadian land.
And his duty it was done, in a battle that was won,
But young Johnny did not live to see the end.
He now lies ‘neath foreign soil
Where Sicilians live and toil
And his grave is there to see e’re you may pass.
He was killed in No Man’s Land
For the liberty of man, now his cross stands there, a symbol of his great task.
Oh, Johnny Eadie we salute you
You are the one who helped to see we did not fall
And your courage and great endurance will
Forever be remembered by us all.

Farm deaths 'very sad'
Weekend accidents kill two in Perth County
By Joe BELANGER,
Tues.,
April 22, 2008
Perth County's farming community is reeling after two of its
own were killed in weekend accidents.
The deaths have agriculture officials urging farmers to take
fewer risks at a time when the pressure's on to get in their
spring planting.
"It's very, very sad," said Andy DE
VRIES, an Ontario Federation
of Agriculture director for Perth North.
"It's just devastating for the whole community to have something
like that happen."
Glen MILLS, 44, of Blanshard Ward, was killed Sunday when he
fell into a liquid manure tank and drowned.
Russell KIPFER/KUEPFER, 40, of Milverton, was killed Saturday when he
was crushed beneath a cultivator he was working on.
Perth
Ontario
Provincial Police said
MILLS was doing chores on
his dairy farm on Perth Line 6 about 6: 45 p.m. when there was
a problem with the tank.
MILLS used a ladder to climb into the tank to try shutting off
a valve and slipped off the ladder into the pit, which contained
about 450,000 litres of manure, police said.
"Family members attempted to locate Mr.
MILLS, and when they
found him in the pit, they pulled him out of the pit and attempted
to resuscitate him, but attempts were unsuccessful," said Const. Glen
CHILDERLEY.
MILLS was transported to Saint Marys Memorial Hospital where he
was pronounced dead.
Saturday, police were called to a report of a man crushed under
a cultivator at 3: 30 p.m. on Duke Street in Brunner.
Police said
KIPFER/KUEPFER had rented a shop to work on the cultivator
and was under it when the hydraulic bottle jack gave out, pinning
KIPFER/KUEPFER.
A friend stopped by the shop, found
KIPFER/KUEPFER and called emergency
services.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene but were unable to revive
KIPFER/KUEPFER, who was pronounced dead at the scene by a coroner.
DE VRIES said many farm-related injuries and deaths occur during
the spring planting or fall harvest because of the workload.
"When the weather's nice and you've got a lot of work to do,
it's go, go, go," said DE
VRIES, who operates a poultry farm
in Elma Ward in northern Perth.
"A lot of it comes down to maybe making short cuts. But you've
still got to use common sense."

Dr.
Reverend
Agnes
GROOME was a woman of remarkable energy and
organizational skills. An accomplished educator and minister,
she was highly educated, earning seven degrees in seven decades
(B.A., B.Ed., B.Div., M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D., M.Div.). Involved in
life-long learning, she took her last course at the University
of Regina at the age of 88. Her teaching positions included Central
Collegiate (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan), Martin and Sheldon Williams
Collegiate (Regina, Saskatchewan), University of Regina, and
University of Toronto. Her church postings included mission fields
in rural Saskatchewan, Saint_James United Church (Regina), Grace
Church in Moose Jaw, St. Andrew's (Toronto), Silverthorne (Toronto),
and a short locum in Ft. Qu'appelle. A woman ahead of her time,
St. Andrew's College refused her ordination and her name was
struck from the roster of graduates because she had married and
was expecting her first child. Agnes always took a leadership
role in community organizations including the Young Women's Christian
Association, United Nations Association, University Women's Club,
Health Research Board, Saskatchewan Pension Committee, New Democratic
Party (candidate in Wascana), plus many church positions including
Sunday School Superintendent, Elder (first female in position
at Lakeview United Church). Agnes was honoured to have been appointed
by the government of Saskatchewan to the Cluff Lake Inquiry into
uranium development. As recent as two years ago, Agnes embarked
on a project to have stained glass windows honouring women in
the Bible installed in Lakeview United Church. As part of her
dedication to education in Saskatchewan, Agnes established several
scholarship funds at the University of Regina in the names of
her husband Les
GROOME, her brother-in-law Paul
GROOME, her parents
Sam and Isabelle, and plus made a generous donation to the University
of Regina establishing the Groome family fellowship in health
research. Agnes and Les were a remarkable team; through all their
studies, travels, and endeavours they loved and supported each
other. Agnes was a true matriarch in her family. She was the
driving force behind family projects; everyone was expected to
be onboard and involved. She could do anything and did -- wire
a home, build a stone fence, shingle a roof, install floors and
siding, build furniture, sew, even bake 12 pies at a time. Agnes
tackled everything with passion, including stamp collecting,
family tree research (four volumes), and land development. Foreign
travels were opportunities to study history and were fodder for
lectures. Widowed at 62, she then earned a new degree, and embarked
on a new career in a new city. Beloved by her grandchildren,
she encouraged them in all their varied interests. Later in life
she took great pleasure in building a new home (at age 80) and
planting 900 perennials on Pasqua Lake. She knew Canada well
as she moved many times: from Fleming to Brandon, Saskatoon,
Regina, Dunnville, Guelph, Clinton, Vancouver, Moose Jaw, Regina,
and Toronto. Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008,
2 p.m., at Wesley United Church, 3913 Hillsdale Street, Regina.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 6-7: 30 p.m. at
Speers Funeral Chapel 2136 College Avenue, Regina. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Sam and Bella Mills Scholarship,
University of Regina.
