LAMER, Doctor Laurent (1931-2008)
Dr. Laurent LAMER passed away peacefully at Notre-Dame Hospital in Montreal after a lengthy illness. Doctor Laurent LAMER dedicated over 40 years of his life to Notre-Dame Hospital's Ophtalmology Department and to the Medicine Faculty of Université de Montréal. Beyond the many patients he has had the privilege of treating, Dr. LAMER was a pioneer of the use of lasers in the treatment of retinal disease and in the use of ocular ultra sound as a diagnostic tool. In recognition of his many contributions to the advancement of medicine, Doctor LAMER was honored and granted a career medal (Médaille de carrière) in 2004 by the Ophtalmology Department and the faculty of medicine of the Université de Montréal. He leaves behind his spouse Jocelyne GAUTHIER, his sons Francis and Olivier, their spouses Bena STOCK and Malene SAABY, his granddaughters Madeleine and Michelle, his grand_sons Sébastien and Simon, Tamarha and Jessie PIERCE (daughters of Jocelyne,) his brothers and sisters Hubert, Jean-Louis, Claudette and Jocelyne, his brothers and sisters in law Fernande LAMER, Rachelle LAMER, Jules JOBIN, Yvon MATTE, Pierrette LUSIGNAN, Jacqueline APRIL, Françoise and Médéric DESROCHERS, Monique APRIL, Hélène APRIL, Luc APRIL et Lois HESS and numerous nephews, nieces, Friends and colleagues. It is with sadness after a courageous battle with cancer that the family of Fred BENTLEY announces his passing. Fred died with dignity and comfort at Bluewater Health Palliative Care at the age of 59. Fred is predeceased by his father Cyril (Cy) in 1991, mother Joyce E. in 1996, and sister Sharron A in 2007. Fred was born in Simcoe, Ontario and moved to Sarnia in 1950. He was employed at Fiberglas Canada for 25 years and recently worked as a production supervisor at Solus Manufacturing (H.E. Vannatter) in Wallaceburg for the past 13 years. Fred is survived by his soul mate and wife Linda of 33 years. Daughter Marnie and her partner Jason and son Tyler and girlfriend Kayla. Adored son-in-law of Ruth L. CHUTE. Loved and respected brother-in-law of Stewart (Terri) CHUTE, Wallace (Hedy) CHUTE, Vernon (Shan) CHUTE, William CHUTE, Paul (Janine) CHUTE, and Ruth Anne (Dr. Peter) SCHLOSSBURG. Also survived by cousins in Holt, England, Woodstock, and Sarnia and several nieces and nephews. Best friend of Thomas A. Beloved husband of 52 years to Ferne (née BROADBENT,) also of Petrolia. Dear father of Connie and Rod BRAY of London, and their children Sarah and Siobhan, Terry and Maryanne WHITING of Winnipeg, and their children Willyn, Angus, Holly and Duncan, Howard and Collette WHITING of Shelburne, and their children Daniel, Stephanie and Lindsay, Joel and Donna WHITING of Oil Springs and their children Emma and Neil, and Becky and Derrick FULTON of Oil Springs, and their children Kaegan and Ronan. Carl was the eldest of 11 children born to Howard (1960) and Blanche (2000) WHITING. Predeceased by a brother Frank (1967) and a sister Shirley ZAVITZ (2006.) Carl is survived by four brothers: Ray (Marilyn) of Oil Springs, Gordon (Bernice), Les (Karen), and Ross (Lindy) all of Petrolia and four sisters Marian (Joe KERWIN,) Gloria (Jim) MATTHEWS of Sarnia, Grace (Charlie BRIMLEY) of Ottawa and Wilma WHITING of Bowmanville, numerous nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Audrey FARR of Oil Springs and a brother-in-law, Cliff ZAVITZ of Camlachie. Loved grandmother of Stephen MATTHEWS, Danny MATTHEWS (Pearl), David MATTHEWS (Debbie), Brenda McARTHUR (late William.) Andrew Rainy ROSS passed away peacefully at home on December 12. 2007, cared for by his wife of 44 years, Marjatta, and son, Michael. Predeceased by brother, Donald, sister Elizabeth WAUGH, Andrew is survived by sisters Georgina MATTHEWS and Hope ROSS- PAPEZIK daughter Kristina (David), grandchildren, Annika and Matthew. He is fondly remembered by nieces, nephews and many Friends. Born in Montreal West, his early talent as an artist, particularly in watercolours, led to a career in architecture, graduating from McGill in 1952. He practiced architecture in Calgary and British Columbia, ending his career with the City of Vancouver, but his love of trees and landscape probably exceeded his interest in buildings, French Gothic cathedrals excepted. As a younger man, he was an ardent skier and sports car enthusiast, with the ski day ending in a race down the mountain road. In his 60's his interest in car racing re-emerged, and he drove at tracks across Canada into his late 70's. A memorial service to follow at a later date.

Nelson was still a work in progress when the Lord took him unto Himself. Beloved husband of the late Iris Helena (October 2004) and Willowmine May (May 1989), Nelson leaves the gift of many happy memories in the hearts of his daughter, Starr BELL of R.R.#1, Warsaw, son Gary ALLAN (deceased) of Burlington and his wife Laima. He will live in the hearts of his four grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Tricia (Matt McGUANE, Ben,) Gavin BELL, Shannon (Jim MORREALE, Hannah and Matthew) and Krista (Ray LOYA, Alexander). Nelson, through his marriage to Helen, gained a loving extended family. He will be fondly remembered by her daughter Heather VANDRIE (William) of Brighton, Barbara MATTHEWS (Victor, deceased) of Kingston, and her son Doctor Robert ORR (Sue) of Orangeville. Dear brother of Dorothy (Walter KILBY) of Mount Hope and the late Herb, Alvin, Mildred, Alberta and Helen. Also missed by many nieces and nephews. For 30 years prior to his retirement in 1975, Nelson was the Executive Vice President of the Society of Industrial Cost Accountants of Canada, and for 25 of those years he also served as Secretary Treasurer of The Society of Industrial Cost Accountants of Ontario (now called The Society of Management Accountants). Nelson was also active in a number of community groups such as the Children's Aid Society, the Hamilton District Health Council and the Ontario Research Council. Upon his retirement, he continued his interest in community work. He organized and became the first Manager of DARTS, the first Executive Director of the Saint_Joseph's Hospital Foundation, Treasurer of the Council on Road Trauma, and President of the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton- Wentworth. His memberships included: the Rotary Club of Hamilton, Canadian Club of Hamilton, Probus Club of Burlington and the Burlington Baptist Church. He received many honours including: The Centennial Medal (1967), First-ever Fellow, Society of Management Accountants (1976), The Queen Silver Anniversary Medal (1977), the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award (2000). Cremation has taken place. He received his Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours) in 1950 from the University of Manitoba and went on to work for Manufacturer's Life Insurance Company from 1950-1967. George then moved to Sun Life Assurance as an actuary, becoming President and Director in 1978. George was known for his integrity and commitment, serving on the boards of Renascent Treatment Centre, the University of Waterloo and Toronto Western Hospital amongst others. He enjoyed his retirement years with family and Friends in Toronto and Creemore, golfing, playing tennis and curling. George was an exceptional gardener and dearly loved the outdoor life. Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 (age 77) after a four year illness. Born in Morden, Manitoba and attended school and university in Winnipeg, Jim had many happy years acting and singing in Rainbow Stage Productions in Winnipeg. Active in his high school years, Jim enjoyed football, basketball, hockey, swimming, and in his adult years was an ardent tennis player. Jim had a distinguished career of 42 years with the Toronto-Dominion Bank, eventually becoming Senior Vice President of Ontario North and East Division. He took great pleasure in the camaraderie within the Bank. Jim will be sadly missed by his loving wife Marie▲ Adeleen (née MATTHEWS) of 53 years, his children Barbara, Cathleen (Duncan) GIBSON, and Patrick (Debbie) DICKIE; grandchildren Russell and Graeme GIBSON, and twins, Laura and Brendan DICKIE. McCAHILL, Michael James
Suddenly at home on June 18, 2008, age 82.
Predeceased by his parents, James and Vivian (née MATTHEWS) former wife, Sally, and several members of the Tyson, Pottinger, Humber clan. He was from long-time Victoria families on both sides. Great-grandparents, John and Mary Anne MATTHEWS homesteaded in the Island View Beach area, grandparents, Ambrose and Ellen MATTHEWS were well-known and lived on Quadra near Hillside. Grandparents, Captain Michael and Helen McCAHILL lived in the Hillside/Bridge St. area for many years and were active in the Odd Fellows/Rebekah Lodges.
Mike attended Burnside Elementary, Central Jr. and Victoria High School, and the Victoria College in Craigdarroch Castle. After a short break in the Army, he returned to education earning his B.A. at University of British Columbia, his B.L.Sc. at University of Toronto and later Advanced Computers at the same university.
After receiving his B.A., he travelled a year exploring Britain and parts of Northern Europe. Returning to Canada with his bride Sally, he earned his B.L.Sc. at the University of Toronto then worked in Victoria at the Greater Victoria Public Library and later at U. Vic. He later worked at Sir George Williams University in Montreal and spent most of his career at Robarts Library at the University of Toronto. He played a major role in establishing the computer cataloguing system that replaced the overloaded existing system. He excelled and was well-respected in his field and will be missed by all.
Michael is survived by his sister, Mavis McCAHILL; cousins, Laurie McKAY (née MATTHEWS,) Craig and Randel MATTHEWS, and their families, many other relatives and a great many Friends.
After many cold winters and sizzling summers in Toronto, Mike returned to his beloved Victoria in 1986, and was able to enjoy over 20 years doing what he enjoyed -- being involved in politics, volunteering for various organizations, attending the opera and ballet, collecting books and music, lunching with Friends and family, and travelling. He was also a really great brother!
A celebration on Michael's life will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 2: 30 p.m. A reception will follow in McCall's Family Centre.
