TREVIRANUS,
H.
Stewart
Died gracefully in Virginia, on February 29th, 2008. Born in
1918 in Germany, his family fled in 1935, first to England, then
Canada during the war. He rode in the Olympics for Canada in
1952, one of only 3 riders with clean jumping performances. After
moving to Virginia in '53, he was instrumental in the creation
of the United States Combined Training Association in 1959, and
devoted his personal life to horses. Professionally, he became
a renowned conservator of paintings, working for such august
clients as the National Art Gallery, Corcoran Gallery, and Paul
Mellon. By the 1970's, he was a member and served as President
of the Washington area St. Andrew's Society, becoming passionate
about all things Scottish later in life. Dad was witty, clever,
charming and unfailingly cheerful. He could design and build anything,
was inventive, and for years sketched our Christmas cards with
our animals in a Christmas scene. He was a natural physical comic,
with faces, gestures and expressions that made you laugh out
loud. He loved to dance. He lit up a room upon entering, was
an irrepressible ladies' man, and remained tall and trim, dressing
impeccably every day of his life - every inch a gentleman. Dad
will be missed greatly by his daughters Denya (Andrew), Leslie
(Ronnie) and Caroline (John Edward), and his three grandchildren
Matthew, Delia, Denya Dee, and by his wife Ann. He leaves behind
his first wife
Marilyn
MASSEY, who remained a life long friend,
and his second wife Virgina, mother of his late son Angus. A Memorial
Service was held on March 5th in Washington, D.C. A very special
thank you to Susan Pettey and Laura Krauss in Virginia, and to
his Canadian Friends who entertained him when he came to visit
Ontario in his later years. Dad now has his son, all his horses
and his dogs by his side. 'Carry on, regardless.'
