ROBERTSON, Wanza Kate (née BUCKLEY)
On Saturday, January 19, 2008, of cancer, surrounded by family at her home in Mississauga, Ontario. Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, on July 12, 1928, Wanza was the first child of the late Eric and Edna (née HONSBERGER) BUCKLEY (Windsor, Ontario) and a loving older sister to the late Keith BUCKLEY (2000.) She was predeceased by her mother- and father-in-law Agnes (née BAILLIE) and Peter ROBERTSON (Bishopbriggs and Glasgow, Scotland and Windsor, Ontario,) her husband of 41 years, Ronald ROBERTSON, Q.C., in 1992, and by their daughter, Heather Agnes, in 1980. Wanza was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a great friend to many. She will be greatly missed by her three surviving children and their spouses, Peter ROBERTSON (Antonietta SEUCHARAN) Holly ROBERTSON (Gaetano AMATO), and Kate ROBERTSON (Michael HOPTON). She will also be deeply missed by her eight grandchildren: Kate, Eric, and Natalie AMATO; Lee and Cole ROBERTSON; and Matthew, Sarah and Aimee HOPTON. She was a cherished sister-in- law to childhood friend Margaret SPETTIGUE (née ROBERTSON) (Owen SPETTIGUE) of Leamington, Ontario, and sister-in-law Judy BUCKLEY (née LAWRASON) of St Catharines and Toronto, and a very special aunt to their respective children: Margaret-Ann, Charles, James, Katherine and Christine SPETTIGUE; and Erica and Andrew BUCKLEY. Dedicated to the wellbeing of others, especially family, she was also very active in the community. As a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years, she drove cancer patients to appointments and treatments. She also delivered meals on behalf of Meals on Wheels. Even the local wildlife benefited from her thoughtfulness: Wanza nurtured milkweed and other native plants in her backyard gardens long before it became trendy to do so. Wanza was a private person, but her kindness and wry sense of humour drew many to her. She was intensely interested in politics and enjoyed well-informed and lively political discussions. With her keen intellect, she was an avid reader and wordsmith, but nobody could say more by simply arching an eyebrow. Her Friends and family will miss her empathy, dry wit, and wise counsel. Wanza endured her illness and her difficult final weeks and days with her characteristic grace and dignity and with a stoicism and sense of humour that was typical of her approach to life's troubles. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Memorial Presbyterian Church, 24 Stavebank Rd. North, (Port Credit) Mississauga (905-278- 8907), at 10: 30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2008. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association, The Canadian Cancer Society or Plan Canada (formerly Foster Parents Plan) would be appreciated.

SMITH, Richard E. " Rick"
Passed suddenly Friday, January 25th at the age of 56 sitting on his brand new snow machine in the bush in northern Ontario. This was a fitting end for a man who was dedicated to his family, Friends, the outdoors and his love of life. Raised on a farm in Azilda, Rick developed uncanny instincts about animals, nature and the land. An avid hunter, fisherman, sportsman and accomplished equestrian, he left behind a huge legacy. Rick and his wife Cathy INCH, own Foothills Farm, a full service equestrian facility in Northern Ontario. Although Rick remained planted in the valley, his desire to grow intellectually drove him to develop a variety of skills. A fully accredited course designer, Rick's knowledge of horses and innate sense of construction led him into a very successful career that enabled him to travel with Cathy and his daughter Natalie to showjumping venues across North America. Never one to sit still, other hobbies included skiing, hockey and canoeing. Whether Rick was travelling in the elite world of showjumping or out in the back 40, he was renowned for his quick wit and sense of timing. Rick's genuine interest in people and incredible loyalty to his Friends and family endeared him to all. These special traits are reflected in his son and sidekick Jedd. The loss of Rick will leave a huge void in everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was larger than life. Beloved husband of Cathy INCH. Loving father of Natalie Rebecca SMITH (Jeff LAWRENCE) and Jedd Robert William SMITH. Cherished son of Beryl (Hill) SMITH and the late Earl SMITH predeceased 1985. Loving brother of Garry (Dorothy), James (Paulette), Darlene (Mike JOLIAT,) Nadine (Fern METHE) and Arlene (Brian ONION.) Special brother-in-law to Tracey INCH- PERRAS (Kent). LAWS, Ruth Mackenzie (formerly CLUGSTON)
Mother, wife, artist, traveller. Born August 1, 1918, in Peitaiho, China. Died November 20, 2007, in Almonte, Ontario, after a stroke, aged 89.
By Michael CLUGSTON, Page L6
Ruth Thomson was born into a large family of United Church of Canada missionaries based in Henan, China.
Her birth in the seaside village of Peitaiho, where the family spent their summers, launched her love affair with water and with life. She couldn't get enough of either, and lived with vitality and gusto well into her 90th year.
Ruth got the travel bug early. As a teenager, she regularly took a small Japanese freighter at the start of the school term from Tianjin, China, to attend Canadian Academy in Kobe, Japan.
At the University of Toronto's Victoria College, she was voted Senior Stick as the best all-round student and athlete. She relished classes with Northrop Frye and the poet E.J. Pratt, and for the rest of her life would anchor her fervent partisanship for Victorian poets with, "As Norrie Frye told us …"
Ruth moved to Japan with her first husband, Don CLUGSTON, a United Church missionary. They had five children - Cathy, Michael, Mackenzie, John and Jamie - who attended Canadian Academy as she had. Ruth always said her chief pleasure in life was raising her family.
Her secret ambition from youth had been to dance on Broadway. That never happened, although she had a head-turning glamour, charm and a thousand-watt smile. She loved a good argument: Defending the wrong poet, painter or any right-wing politician would incur her instant rebuke - quickly followed by peals of laughter as the disagreement was forgotten.
In 1966, she and Don divorced - almost unheard of in missionary society - in an effort to find more fulfilment. Ruth left Japan, settled in Ottawa and taught English at the federal government's language school. More than once she swam across the Ottawa River.
In 1973, Ruth married Robert Bollin LAWS in Ottawa. After his death in 1987, she lived in Almonte, Ontario
Her personality seemed to grow larger over the years. She wore a black arm band in public in 1970 to protest against the government's imposition of the War Measures Act. In her 50s, she spray-painted her Karmann Ghia convertible red, orange and yellow. In her 70s, she explored out-of-the-way corners of Scotland by herself. She painted until a few days before her death.
Ruth loved literature - her bookshelves were crammed with modern classics. Proud of her Scottish heritage, she was quick to lend How the Scots Invented the Modern World to anyone passing by.
Her passions never diminished: her deep love of China and the Canadian Shield landscape, of swimming in lakes and oceans, of poetic turns of phrase and the myriad colours always on her painter's palette.
Michael CLUGSTON is Ruth's son.

LAWS, Norman Robert William
Surrounded by his family who loved him so dearly, Norman passed away at the age of 88 at the Sunnybrook Veterans' Residence on March 22, 2008. We were all moved by his incredible strength of body and spirit. Loved and cherished by Joan 'Mom', his adored wife of 58 years. Peter (Carol), Andrea (Lionel), Sharon (Chris), Cathy (Michael) and Heather will always be grateful for having such a 'fabulous' Dad. To Matthew, Adam, Amy, Julie, Corinne, Lauren and Luke he was a doting grandfather who always took interest in what they were doing and great pride in their accomplishments. Norm is now enjoying, as he always did, the company of his dear brother Gord who passed away six days earlier. Norman served overseas in the Navy during World War 2. He raised his family on his special talents as an artist. He shared his passions for family, art, history, creating, and nature's beauty through his art; his vast collection of books; family canoe trips, road trips and adventures; and his extensive list of building projects. He touched the lives of so many with his integrity and his quiet, loving nature. We cherish the memories. Contact family or email heatherlaws@sympatico.ca for future details about the celebration of Norm's life. Barb will also be sadly missed by the younger generation in her network of family and Friends including Jennifer and Jessica ROLLING, Jesse and Carlee LAWSON and numerous other great nieces and nephews. Throughout her life Barb showed incredible determination in overcoming adversity and always appreciated having her days brightened by family, Friends, former neighbours, Bendix co-workers and Laundry Factory customers. She choose to be grateful for what came her way rather than to complain about what didn't and, while receiving excellent care from Doctor QUIGG, Community Care Access Centre, hospice workers and nursing staff on the second floor of the G&M Hospital during her final months, was able to eloquently remind us all about what is truly important in life. May her spirit live on to help make the world a better place. Visitation will be held Friday, March 28th from 7-9 p.m. with funeral to follow on Saturday March 29th at 1 p.m. all at Fawcett Funeral Home - Collingwood Chapel, 82 Pine Street. Luncheon to follow at the Royal Canadian Legion, Collingwood. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Doctor Mark Bernstein/Brain Tumour Research c/o Toronto Western Hospital or locally to the Collingwood G&M Hospital.
