The first of 13 children, Caroline moved to Canada in 1903 with parents Malcolm and Emily WATTY and her baby sister.
Thanks to Ontario's Free Grants and Homestead Act, the family took up land in Dorion, Ontario, a new settlement on the Canadian Pacific Railway line northeast of Thunder Bay.
Caroline thrived in this milieu. With only one year of formal education she taught herself to read. This she did avidly, later acquiring a vast library of books on biography, history, politics and geography.
At 18, she cut pulpwood for shipping to the mills. During a smallpox scare she moved at age 21 to Schreiber, Ontario, a Canadian Pacific Railway divisional and crew-change point, where she replaced quarantined cooks and cleaners at the Canadian Pacific Railway's Young Men's Christian Association.
Qualified for a railway pass after one year's employment, Caroline took the train across Canada whenever possible.
She indulged her love of travel until age 95, with flights to Europe and Cuba and automobile journeys to both coasts. She learned to drive at 68 - and took a car maintenance course before getting her licence.
After her marriage in 1938 to Alvin (Jake) JACOBSON, a railway conductor, Caroline continued working at the Y until her son Clarence was born.
The family moved to Port Arthur in the early 1940s, and Caroline gave birth to her second son, Douglas, who predeceased her in 1996. Jake died of Lou Gehrig's disease in 1962.
Caroline was in on the planning of Castlegreen, one of Canada's earliest housing co-operatives, in Thunder Bay. Never missing a meeting or a chance to volunteer, she lived there from its opening in the 1970s with, later, daily attention from her son Clarence, until going into a nursing home at age l03.
She insisted that her daily "porridge" of oatmeal, brewer's yeast, wheat germ, blackstrap molasses and a whole bulb of garlic contributed to her longevity and to her freedom from arthritis, allergies, headaches and deafness.
But the main secret toher long life, she confessed, was that she never worried about anything.
Caroline had a passion for politics. She voted when first eligible and in every election thereafter. She was a life member of the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation/New Democratic Party, attended conventions and worked in campaigns until she was 90.
Caroline once summed up her long life this way: "When I was young I admired clever people. Now that I am old I admire kind people."
Always smiling in spite of adversity, Caroline was a kind, calm person.

Two men arrested in Brampton teen's death

Peel police said yesterday they have arrested two Brampton men in the death of a 19-year-old who was stabbed in a parking lot outside a Mississauga strip club Saturday morning.
Luis ESTRADA- LEMMON of Brampton died shortly after he was taken to hospital.
Michael STRUC, 23, is charged with first-degree murder, while Eric JACOME, 24, is charged with being an accessory after the fact.

After a courageous battle with cancer, John died at the Powell River General Hospital after being cared for lovingly at home by his family for many months. Born in Stratford, Ontario to James and Jane (UMSTEAD) GRAHAM, educated in Toronto and graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1955, with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. While in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he met and married the love of his life, Ruth JACQUARD, his wife of 55 years. John served 25 years with the Royal Canadian Navy on both coasts, in Ottawa and two years in England, as an exchange officer, at the submarine base in Portland Bill, Dorset. He, Ruth and their two children, David and Paula travelled extensively throughout England and Europe before returning to Canada to their home in Victoria. John retired from the navy in 1975 and consulted to the marine industry until 1986. They moved to Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, where they built a lovely new home and designed a beautiful Rhododendron garden which they enjoyed for 15 years. They moved to Powell River in 2004 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Always a gentleman, John could keep an audience captivated with his wonderful sense of humour and endless stories of his travels. He was respected and loved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Ruth, his beloved and caring children, David (Joanne), Paula (Brian) and six wonderful grandchildren, Rob and Sam Graham, Scott, Ian, Sydney and Kate Barnes. His only sister, Jane Anne CATALANO (Tony) and many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as the many Friends he has made in his lifetime will be saddened by his passing. He is predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Jimmy. Heartfelt thanks to his doctor, Bruce Hobson and all the nursing care given by the Palliative care nurses, Caroline, Lee and Chris, and Community Health Care worker, Carol. In keeping with John's wishes, a private memorial will be held in the Spring for family and Friends. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Powell River General Hospital Foundation CAT scan fund.

My Final Broadcast Peacefully and prayerfully, in my 69th year, after a courageous battle at Alexandra Hospital surrounded by my family on June 2, 2008 our Lord welcomed me home. I leave behind my devoted and adoring wife of 47 years Diane (TREMBLAY,) and my 5 loving children and their spouses. Jerry Jr. and his wife Roxanne (ANTAYA,) Terry and his wife Terryanne (CARROLL,) Mark and his wife Sherri (SMITH,) Michelle and her husband Jim (MERRIFIELD,) Nicole and her husband Dany (JACQUES.) I will continue to watch over my beautiful grandchildren that gave me more joy than I ever thought possible - Jessica and John DANIEL, Kyle and Brittany DANIEL and Brandi and Daniel LEWIS, Tara and Mitchell DANIEL, Mark and Matthew MERRIFIELD and "Peanut" Jacques as well as my sister Pat PROUSE of Ingersoll. I have been reunited with those who went before including my mom Delia (GATES) 1989 and dad Naboth 1996. My life has been full and blessed. I was fortunate to love my chosen career in broadcasting which spanned over 40 years. Starting at CFCO in Chatham, CHOK in Sarnia, SJCS Stratford, CFPL London, and finally CKOT Tillsonburg where I forged many lifelong Friendships. I also derived joy from my many years of DJ work. It is hard to imagine the number of first dance songs I played for newlyweds over the years and the people who knew me by my unique speakers. I express special thanks to our family physician Doctor Kelly SHAUGHNESSEY who was a tremendous support throughout and the loving care given by the Alexandra Hospital staff. In regards to my illness I am indebted to Woodstock Urologist Doctor VOGALIN and excellent medical staff at the London Regional Cancer Centre including Doctor Mary McKENZIE and her assistants Grace and Paul. I appreciated the constant support of John LAMERS, Owner and General Manager of CKOT Easy 101.3, Elaine BELANGER, Kathy BEEMER, Peter BAUMAN/BOWMAN, Lorette CRUNDWELL, George MANTLER, Doug OLTSHER, Pat PROUSE, Dean and Cheryl SHEVALIER, Louie TREMBLAY and Luanne WATT. Beloved wife of Phil YAKUBOVICH of Strathroy and dear mother of Brad and Margaret YAKUBOVICH of Toronto and Cheryl and Michael SAITO of Mississauga. Grandmother to Megan and Carter and also survived by her sister-in-law Margaret SMITH. Predeceased by her brother Lloyd SMITH of Strathroy. Visitation will be held at Denning Bros. Funeral Home, Strathroy on Friday, June 6th from 7: 00 p.m. to 9: 00 p.m. with Funeral Service from the funeral home on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 11: 00 a.m. Rev. Mervyn JACQUES officiating. Monsieur BÉRUBÉ a été propriétaire de Matériaux Bérubé et maire de Rimouski. La famille recevra les condoléances, CofE vendredi 8 février de 14h and agrave; 17h et en soirée de 19h and agrave; 22h au Centre funéraire Bissonnette, 125, rue St-Louis, Rimouski. Samedi, jour des funérailles, le salon ouvrira à 8h30. Le service religieux sera célébré à 10h30 en la Cathédrale de Rimouski. Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Sunset Manor Nursing Home, Collingwood, in his 95th year. Ted, loving husband of Julia KOTZ (née JACYNA;) Beloved father of the late Henry KOTZ; cherished grandfather of Christopher and Sarah KOTZ. Ted will be dearly missed by his sister-in-law Yanka ANDRUSYSZYN, niece Grazyna, her husband Rod DIETER and their daughter Meagan, and by his daughter-in-law Karen BAKER.
