George William HOLBROOK was born in Asquith, Saskatchewan 16 December 1917. He leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Frances Mary FLETCHER and three children, Adam (and his wife, Mariana,) Jane (and her husband, Doctor Ralph SMITH,) and Peter George (who died in 1973). He has five grandchildren: Miranda (Clarke), Rose, Colburn, and Duncan and Kate HOLBROOK- SMITH. He was educated in Saskatchewan and England and received degrees in engineering from the University of London and Queen's University, Kingston. He also received an honorary degree from the Royal Military College, Kingston. He served in the Royal Signals and the Royal Canadian Signals, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was head of the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the Royal Military College, Kingston and later President of the Nova Scotia Technical College, Halifax. He retired as Director- General of the Communications Research Centre, Ottawa. He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2004. In retirement he lived in Tantallon, Nova Scotia, Halifax, and Waterloo, Ontario. He died 15 July 2008 in Waterloo, Ontario of complications resulting from a stroke. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Robert (Bob) passed gently at the age of 94 on April 9, 2008, surrounded by family. He will be profoundly missed by his wife of seventy years, Irene (née THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON,) their daughters Diane GILDAY (David) and Marilynne SINCLAIR (Brent HOLDEN,) son Gregory SINCLAIR (Kateri LANTHIER) and six grandchildren, Sean (Jane CASKEY), Neil (Kristi SYRON), and Keith GILDAY (Regan BIGGS), and Nicholas, Julia and newborn William SINCLAIR. Robert was the proud great-grandfather of James, Ellen and Walker GILDAY. He was predeceased by his sister Renee DUNTHORNE.
Born in Toronto on July 22, 1913, Robert married Irene in 1937. In 1943, the couple moved to Montreal, where they raised their family, returning to Toronto in 1987. Robert delighted us all with his passion for jazz and swing music - he was a clarinet and saxophone player, and performed in Toronto swing bands by night in the 1930s, while completing Chartered Accountant accreditation by day. He enjoyed a successful career as chief financial officer for a major, Quebec-based construction company. In later years, he and Irene took great pleasure in their cottage on Lake Champlain in upstate New York, hosting innumerable joyful family gatherings. His sense of humour, unshakeable optimism at lowering his golf score 'next time,' and his talent for improvising vivid bedtime stories are indelible memories. We will always cherish the legacy of Robert's gracious, gentle and deeply considerate nature.
The family wishes to acknowledge the thoughtful care and diligence of the staff of the Wellesley Central Place, Robert's home for the last two years of his life. If desired, donations may be made to Wellesley Central Place, 160 Wellesley Street East, Toronto, M4A 1J3.

Born near Peterborough, raised in Renfrew and educated at Queen's, he left university in 1939 to join the Royal Canadian Air Force 400 Squadron, flying Spitfire and Mustang aircraft in fighter-reconnaissance missions over Europe during World War 2. He earned the rank of Flight Lt. and the Distinguished Flying Cross during his service; he was inducted by France into the Legion d'Honneur in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of D-Day. In the 60th year of marriage to his beloved wife Patricia Mary (nee HOLDEN,) and treasured father of Katherine (Werling,) Michael, Terry, Kevin and Brian, Art leaves as well three daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren. After a lengthy illness, Mike quietly went to sleep on June 13, 2008, surround by his family and under the outstanding care of E.I.C.U. staff of University Hospital. He was 72 years of age. Mike leaves behind his devoted wife, Sylvia, of 51 years and his two daughters Sharon (Glade HOLDER) and Nancy (Ricardo SAIKALI.) Know as "Papa" by his adoring grandchildren, Aaron and Victoria HOLDER. Survived by his brother, Steve (Joanne) and his sister, Mary. This quiet and serious natured man used his life to demonstrate his strong faith, not only to his family but to all who knew him. The Memorial Service will held on Saturday, July 5th 2008, 2: 00 p.m. At The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 459 Second Street, London Ontario. BARRETT, Nancy Elizabeth
In her 92nd year, suddenly slipped away on December 24, 2007 at Christie Gardens in Toronto with family by her side. She died as she had lived, with a quiet strength and grace. Predeceased by husband Franklin, Nancy leaves her children David, Susan HOLDER (Greig) and Elizabeth LINES (Rob) and granddaughters Lisa, Amanda, Alison and Julie. Blessed with a creative soul and a sweet heart, Nancy was a devoted wife, a wise mother, a gentle 'Nanny' and a lifelong student of art who passionately pursued her learning and growth through both The Etobicoke Art Group and the (then) Ontario College of Art into her late 70s. She was also committed to the Etobicoke Art Group as a vital community presence and assumed a number of volunteer roles over the years, including that of President. Friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial gathering in honour of Nancy's life on Monday, January 28th, 7 to 9 p.m. upstairs at Queen's Pasta, 2263 Bloor St. W. (second block west of Runnymede). Sincere thanks to CANES Home Support Services for helping Nancy live independently for as long as possible and for bringing Abla into her life, who remained a most wonderful friend, caregiver and advocate for Nancy's wellbeing to the end. Thanks also to the kind and dedicated staff at Christie Gardens for their thoughtful care since Nancy's arrival in 2005. Died peacefully, surrounded by her family, at her home in Waterloo, Ontario on Monday, January 14, 2008. Daughter of the late John Henry MARTIN and Elsie Florence (SMALL) of Portsmouth, England. Sister to Kenneth MARTIN (deceased) and Marjorie JOWETT of Havant, England. Nesta taught at the Sunshine Home for the Blind, Harrow, England and nursed at the Evalina Hospital for Children, London. She married Peter, a geologist, in 1955 and came to Canada in 1955 where she taught briefly in Montreal and Niagara Falls. As the wife of a geologist she travelled to remote parts of the world where her kindness and good humour won her many Friends. Dear wife of Peter MORRIS. Devoted mother of Martin Vaughan MORRIS of Guelph and Charlotte Louise RYAN and her husband Jerome Xavier RYAN of Toronto. Loved by her only grandchild, Peter Xavier RYAN. She will be missed by her sister Marjorie, her sister-in-law Mary MARTIN of Vancouver, British Columbia, and by many cousins, nephews and nieces, and grand-nephews and grand-nieces. During Nesta's long and painful struggle with cancer, she was sustained by the devoted care of Doctor Donna WARD and Lisa HOLISEK, Community Palliative Nurse, and by Joan, Paula and Sarah of the Palliative Care team. William John GLASSER, beloved husband of the former Melva HOLLAND of Neustadt, passed away at the South Bruce Grey Health Centre in Walkerton on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at the age of 89 years.
He is survived by a brother, Helmuth GLASSER of Neustadt, brother- and sisters-in-law Isobel and Harvey HOLLAND of Hanover, Florence GLASSER of Neustadt and Gertie ZIMMERMAN of Hanover. Also a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and Friends. Predeceased by two sisters, Edna WALTER and Marjorie MEPHAM, and two brothers, Leon and Norman GLASSER.
Friends were received at the Garrett Funeral Chapel in Neustadt until the morning of Friday, January 18, 2008 then to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Neustadt for funeral services at 11: 00 a.m. Interment Hanover Cemetery. Reverend David WUNDERLICH officiated.
The pallbearers were Jeffrey KARTECHNER, Ken GLASSER, Jim DIEBEL, Jeremy GLASSER, Terry MacHINA and Nick GLASSER. The flower bearers were Chris GLASSER, Mark DIEBEL, Rachelle BECKER, Ron MacHINA and Brandon GLASSER.

HOLLAND fulfilled her final wish to join her Lord, passing away at Kingsway Lodge in Saint Marys at the age of 95. GIBSON, Alice Mary
On April 21, 2008, at Bluewater Health Sarnia, Alice Mary GIBSON died peacefully after a protracted illness borne with great courage. Alice was the beloved wife of Jim GIBSON. Loving mother of Greg GIBSON and his wife Karen and Joanne GIBSON and her husband John HOLLAND. Cherished grandmother of Jimmy HOLLAND. Also▼ survived by many siblings. Alice graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1967 with her Bachelor of Arts degree. She taught for 37 years with the Lambton County Board of Education as a Kindergarten teacher. Alice enjoyed music, was a member of the Jeanettes and the Rainbow Singers, and was a volunteer with the Lambton County Music Festival. Alice was also an avid gardener, enjoyed playing bridge, and loved to travel. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 1: 00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Family and Friends will be received on Thursday, April 24, 2008, from 2: 00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home. Linda was the daughter of Kenneth and the late Helen (nee: KERN) (1995.) Dear sister of Cheryl FAWCETT wife of William FAWCETT of Mac Tier, Ontario; Kathy HOLLAND of Calgary, Alberta; Vicki FISHER, wife of Kirk FISHER of Brampton David HOLLAND of Pembroke; Tim HOLLAND of Brampton. Predeceased by her husband, John ENSOR, and her sisters, Mrs. Isabel SYMONS and Mrs. Florence HOLLAND. Survived by her step-children, Frances VAN MEER of Annan, Ontario and Robert ENSOR, of Victoria, British Columbia, and her nephews and nieces David SYMONS of Windsor, Ontario, Michael HOLLAND of Sarnia, Ontario, Susan JOHNSTON of Toronto, Gail GINGRAS of Kincardine, Ontario, Geoffrey HOLLAND of Barrie, Ontario and Christine SSAINTWRENCE of Stratford, Ontario. Barbara was a long-time friend and supporter of the Canadian art community, running the Artist's Workshop (an informal art school) in Toronto for many years, and, after her marriage and move to Ottawa, establishing the Wells Gallery there. Following her retirement and the sale of the Gallery, she lived in Kingston, Ontario for several years. before moving to a retirement home in Owen Sound to be near her step-daughter Fran. "Boo" will be fondly remembered by all her family and Friends. A private cremation has been held; interment in Toronto will be arranged in the Spring. If you wish, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimers Society, or the charity of your choice.

Peacefully on March 8, 2008. Survived by his loving wife Friedel, his daughter Penny, grandchildren Jennifer, Jonathan and three great-grandchildren. Arthur worked for the Toronto Telegram for 18 years, later was a charter member of the Toronto Sun and a charter member of Church of the Master. Arthur will be sadly missed by many Friends.
