MacQUARRIE, Harry " Ivan"
Harry 'Ivan' MacQUARRIE of Etobicoke, Ontario, passed gracefully at Saint_Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. Born February 14, 1929 in Cape Breton Settlement, New Brunswick, he was the youngest of the late Henry and Catherine (HANINGTON) MacQUARRIE. Ivan leaves behind his second wife, H. Rosemary MOWAT, his brothers Earle of Moncton, Ronald of Saint John and sister, Kathleen SKIDD (Ralph) of Moncton. Predeceased by his treasured wife Edith Isabel (MacRAE) MacQUARRIE, brother John and sisters Gladys MacQUARRIE, Mildred KELLY, Thelma CHRISTENSEN, Beulah CASSIDY and Eileen EAGLES. His many nieces and nephews from his and Edie's families will remember Ivan fondly; as will his extended families of Michael CULVER and Laura DURANT. Ivan spent his entire career with Canadian Oil (White Rose) that was, taken over by Shell Canada. From the 40's to the 80's he started as office clerk, then to the auditing team; oh, what memorable stories he had of those days. Next he was a sales representative, and not long after the sales manager. Some of his best times were in Halifax working on the conversion from White Rose to Shell. He ended his career as advertising manager with travels to the Orient to source products for customer loyalty programs. In retirement he joined Al Kush and Associates, working on many successful direct mail marketing projects with Eaton's and American Express. During his life, he enjoyed golfing, curling, squash, boating and his partnerships in standard bred horses. He also loved his many winters in Lauderdale-By-TheSea, Florida. One of his most difficult times was being a Juror on the Bernardo trial. Come to Ivan's last Directors' meeting at the Valhalla Inn, Etobicoke, on Friday, August 1st from 4: 00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to say goodbye. After cremation, Ivan and dog Sandy will join Edie at St. Stephen's United Church, Black River Bridge, New Brunswick on Wednesday, August 13th at noon. Ursula THIERLING of Meaford passed away at Central Place Retirement Community in Owen Sound on Saturday February 9, 2008 at the age of 86. Predeceased by her beloved husband Albert Gerhard THIERLING of Meaford on February 23, 2006 and by their daughter Bärbel Renate Hanna in infancy. Dear sister of Inge HANKEL of Germany and sister-in-law of Lin of Myrtle Beach, and Renate and Ruth, both of Germany. Fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews and their families. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service, officiated by Reverend Judith OLIVER, will be conducted at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., in Meaford on Friday, February 29, 2008 at 1 p.m. Interment of Ursula's cremated remains will be conducted at Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford at a later date in the spring. On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at her home in London, Ontario, Denise Alice DE MUY passed away after a battle with cancer. Dear sister and friend of Di, Dave and Donna, including Dianne's husband Erich ZEUCH and David's wife Wendy GRANT. Loved and respected aunt of Dianne's children Jill, Kris and Brad, including Jillian's husband Tim HANKEWICH, Kristyne's husband Jan CZEPUTYK and their daughters Anna Mae and Holly, and Bradley's wife Carole; as well as Donna's daughters Nat and Jen, including Natalie's husband Rob MERRICK and Jennifer's husband Kerry NORTH and their daughters Mackenzie and Shay. She will be missed by numerous cousins of the DE MUY and Ferguson families. Predeceased by her parents Doris (FERGUSON) and Chuck DE MUY. She will be fondly remembered by childhood Friends, colleagues from Bell, Friends from the holistic field and Kids on the Block and a multitude of others. Denise worked at Bell for 31 years and influenced many people during that time. At Denise's request there will be no funeral and cremation has taken place. Her final resting place will be in the family plot at Holy Angel's Cemetery in Saint Thomas. When I think of Denise, I think of her eyes and they look out for all of us. I think of her ears and she hears what we have to say. I think of her hands and she reaches out for us. I think of her arms and she hugs us. I think of her heart and she loves us. Raised on a farm, Burns never lost his love of nature and the outdoor life. This love he passed on to his children and grandchildren. After a very brief illness, Rob passed away in Denver, Colorado where he was vacationing with his son, Bryant. Left to mourn with his son are his parents Lawrence and Françoise HANNA, his sister Stephanie and her husband Gregory SIEMENS from La Crosse, Wisconsin and many uncles, aunts and cousins from Montreal area as well as many Friends and co-workers. Rob was appointed an Officer in her Majesty's Canadian Armed Forces Navel Reserve in 1985. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering in 1988. While at University he was very involved in student activities and was President of the Engineering Student Association, 1986-87. He also attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Business in 1999 and 2003. Rob worked in the pulp and paper industry most of his career. This brought him to many locations in Canada, U.S.A. and Europe where he worked as a specialist and consultant in papermaking and made many Friends. He was a very accomplished young man. His residence at the time of his passing was Sartell, Minnesota. Rob loved his son Bryant very much and spent as much time as he could with him. He taught his son how to play chess and coached him in hockey and they did many activities together. Bryant was the pride and joy of his life. A Prayer Service has been set for Thursday, April 10 at 7: 30 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial for April 11, 2008 at 10: 30 a.m. with both being held at Saint Anne's Roman Catholic Parish, 217 Lenore Drive. Passed away with his family by his side at the age of 59, on March 8th, 2008. Beloved husband to Diane and loving father to Kelly, he will always be in our hearts. He will be dearly missed by brothers Ron, Barry and Ken and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. son of Reginald and Violet SPILLMAN predeceased. Throughout a year long battle with cancer Jeff remained positive and strong willed, where giving up was not an option. We are very grateful to many family, Friends and neighbours who have supported us through Jeff's courageous fight. Also our thanks go out to the care and kindness given from the oncology department and Doctor KREIGER at Scarborough General, and a special thanks to Doctor HANNA, Doctor DUECK and nursing staff in the CCRU at Sunnybrook Hospital. Passed away in Toronto in his 90th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Shirley (JENNINGS) in 1993. He is survived by his four devoted sons and their wives: Bruce (Barbara HANNACH) of Toronto; Paul (Fran HALTER) of Montreal; David (Joanne WILSON) of Toronto and Michael (Pamela ROBINSON) of Vancouver. Cherished grandfather of Robert, Ashley, Jennifer, Mark, Torie, Andrew, Benjamin, Owen and Emily. Sam will also be sadly missed by his brother, Allan Bryson PATTERSON; sister-in-law Joy FULFORD; and his friend of many years, Gwen PHELAN. Born in Toronto, Sam was a University of Toronto graduate in Chemical Engineering (1941). His 45 year career with Alcan began in Arvida, Québec, and took him around the world. His life was his family, Friends and Alcan, and included many happy years in Mandeville, Jamaica, followed by Montreal. On retirement, he returned to Toronto. Passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, surrounded by his family. Left with happy memories are wife Joan, sister Betty, daughters Susan (Patrick) and Janice (Neil), and granddaughters Erin and Leah, with whom he shared his zeal for sports, passion for travel, appreciation of Friendship, and his ever-ready controversial dinner topic. Also remembered through lifelong Friendship, weekends on the slopes and political jousting at family gatherings, by his brothers and sisters (in-law) Jim and Margaret, Ken and Joan, and his nieces and nephews. Jim knew what he liked and enthusiastically sought out those activities, cultivating his interests and sharing them with family, Friends and colleagues. Amongst other characteristics, he was a leader, planner, motivator, mentor and stabilizing presence, both within his own family and his other communities. We miss him already. It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the sudden passing of Michael Carl Paul HANNESSON on May 15, 2008.
He will be sorely missed by his wife and soul mate Myke (MEREDITH,) adoring daughters Laura and Signi, "stellar" son-in-law Jason (Michael's words) and beautiful, precious granddaughter Hanna. He will also be missed by many extended family members and Friends who were included in the family circle.
Michael's career was vast and varied and we know that many will miss the banter for which he was known - not to mention the hard questions. He considered himself semi-retired (not necessarily true), as he never turned down a chance to mentor and advise young people on their career paths and education.
As always he continued to travel, as long as he could access his e-mail, a courier service and telephone, but of course with a hammock and beach nearby.
We will celebrate Michael's life on May 27th at the Beach Grove Golf Course in Tsawwassen, British Columbia from 3 to 7 p.m., children are welcome.
