SPELLER,
Doctor
Stuart (1926-2008)
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of
Dr. Stuart
SPELLER - family physician, devoted father and husband,
amateur radio operator, musician, woodworker, machinist, motorcycle
rider and philanthropist. Stuart died peacefully at Fenelon Court
in the morning of June 20, 2008, in his 83rd year. Stuart was
predeceased by his wife, Muriel, who passed away in 1997. He
is survived by his six children: Donald, Katherine Hanbury (Bob),
David (Corrine), Lynda
ARMSTRONG, Patricia
ARMSTRONG (Brad),
and Kenneth. He was also predeceased by his two daughters Gladys
and Cheryl. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren:
Maretta (Mike) and Bethany
HANBURY,
Ryan and Kristen
SPELLER,
Cristian SPELLER and Kaitlyn
ARMSTRONG.
Stuart is predeceased
by his sister Enid and brothers Donald and Randal. Born in Toronto,
Stuart initially lived in several locations as he followed his
Salvation Army parents to various postings throughout Canada.
He received his medical degree at Dalhousie University in Nova
Scotia. After graduation, he practiced medicine for over five
years in Glace Bay and Guysborough before moving to Ontario where
he had practices in Bethany and Peterborough. His medical career
began long before Ontario Health Insurance Plan when doctors
still, made house calls at all hours, did much of their own lab
work, and sometimes delivered babies at home. By the time Stuart
hung up his shingle after more than 47 years as a family physician,
the practice of medicine included high-tech diagnostics, universal
health-care coverage, on-line refresher courses, and more-or-less
regular work hours. For him, medicine was a sacred calling of
the highest order. He loved his work with a passion; and for
that reason alone, he continued to practice long after his 'official'
retirement at age 65. Stuart was a generous provider to his family
and to numerous charitable organizations. An intellectual and
a perpetual student, he learned new skills in a wide range of
disciplines throughout his life. Stuart was a skilled woodworker,
competent metal machinist and also an electronics enthusiastparticularly
in the fields of computers and amateur radios. He also played
several brass instruments, including the trumpet in the Bethany
marching band, the tuba in a local Peterborough band, and the
baritone horn for several years in Salvation Army bands in Peterborough
and Fenelon Falls. In his 70's, Stuart even got his motorcycle
license. Stuart will be missed by all, particularly his family,
his Friends, and the thousands of patients he treated and comforted
throughout his long and wonderful life. Visitation will be held
at Comstock Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge Street,
Peterborough on Monday, June 23, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial
service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, June 24th at 2: 00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army or the Peterborough
Regional Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated.

Mom never got over daughter's murder
Misty HANEY 'lost everything when she lost her daughter.'
By Heather
RIVERS, Sun Media, Tues., February 12, 2008
Woodstock -- The mother of an Oxford County girl murdered by
the mom's former same-sex partner has died.
Misty HANEY, 29, "lost everything when she lost her daughter,"
her sister, Paige
GILLIS, said.
HANEY died Saturday.
A jury in 2006 found
HANEY's former partner, Melissa
BABINEAU,
guilty of second-degree murder and indignity to a body in the
death of two-year-old Rebbecca
HANEY.
BABINEAU was sentenced to life in prison.
The murder investigation began when Rebbecca's body was found
December 24, 2003, in the basement of their Embro-area farmhouse
where the HANEYs,
BABINEAU and her three children had been living.
At trial, BABINEAU's role in relation to the toddler was described
as parental.
GILLIS said her sister had a hard time recovering from the loss
of her daughter.
"The monster that took my niece's life basically took my sister's
that day," she said.
GILLIS said while her younger sister had had "some problems"
earlier, Rebbecca's birth changed that.
"As soon as she was born, she grew up," she said. "Becca made
her become who she was meant to be -- (it showed her) that she
was meant to be more than she had been. It made her want to do
more with her life."
HANEY and
BABINEAU moved to the Embro farmhouse in early December 2003.
On the evening of December 23 Rebbecca was put to bed at 7: 30,
but couldn't be found the next morning.
After several hours of searching, the toddler's body was found
in a garbage bag inside a box in the cellar.
BABINEAU admitted to hiding the body, but denied causing the
girl any harm.
Since her daughter's death,
HANEY had trouble coping with her
loss and kept to herself,
GILLIS said.
"My sister was a good person," she said. "She was a good person
with a good heart.
"To her, her daughter walked on water. She couldn't find her
way back. I'm hoping she can find her peace now that she has
her daughter back in her arms again."
