Earl Nelson HEWITSON, formerly of R.R.#5 Owen Sound, passed away on Sunday, March 9th, 2008, at Lee Manor, in his 87th year. Husband of Edna HEWITSON (née HALL,) for sixty-one years. Father of Wayne and his wife Sharen, of Walter's Falls, his children, Sandra (Will) Slot and children, Ryan, Niklas, Kayteline, Karissa and Mariah, of Shallow Lake, Susan (Doug) HYDE, their sons, Benjamin and Noah, of Kingston and Stephen HEWITSON and his fiancé, Sarah ASHLEY, of Toronto. Also, father of Brenda MacDONALD, her daughters, Miranda (Jon) MILLER, their sons, Jackson and Michael, of Tara, Melissa MacDONALD, of London and Jamie Lyn (Ben) WILDER and son, Bradley, of Owen Sound. Losing you has left a void within me that can never be filled. I thank God every day for allowing me the many years of happiness I had with you. You were always there for me and taught me so much about life, but more importantly, you taught me how to accept death. Although you suffered very much especially the last year, you faced death as you faced life Head on. You were the bravest person I have ever known. You never once complained and to the end you worried about everyone else except yourself. There were many days that I did not wish to live any longer. Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend slipped away peacefully December 23, 2007 in Victoria, B.C.
Predeceased by husbands Reginald Ellery Percy HAMMOND and Clifford Wallis EVENS, sisters Velma, Adele, Margaret, brother Edwin. She leaves children Jean EDGE- PARTINGTON (John) of Creston, British Columbia, Glen HAMMOND (Catherine SCOTT) of Chemainus, British Columbia, Lynne HAMMOND of Ottawa, Ontario, grandchildren Michael EDGE-PARTINGTON, David EDGE- PARTINGTON, Robin EDGE- PARTINGTON, Chrissy HAMMOND and Ted HAMMOND, 8 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of the BUCKLIN family who emigrated from England to Rhode Island in the early 1600's.
The daughter of U.S. Consul-General George Augustus BUCKLIN Jr.▼ and mother Emiline PORTER from Keene, Ontario, her extraordinary life began February 10, 1911 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Her childhood was spent in France, Germany, Mexico, Canada and New Zealand; she spoke 4 languages by the age of ten. She began playing the cello at age 9, later obtaining an M.A. in Music at Mills College, Berkeley. Her orchestral career included the Victoria Symphony in the 1950's (principal cello), Toronto Symphony 1961-70 (assistant principal cello), and Orchestra London 1970-79 (principal cello) while husband Clifford EVENS was music director. She was also on the faculty of University of Western Ontario. In the 1980's she played with the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra and Canadian Opera Company Orchestra In addition, she enjoyed playing in numerous chamber music groups throughout her long career. She earned the love and respect of colleagues wherever she played. Her passion for music was matched by her passion for life - she lived it to the fullest. Always positive and younger than her years, she was open to new adventures, whether they be travelling the world, horse backpacking, or trying water-skiing in her 70's.
Uncomplaining, she faced the challenges of her life with courage, strength, determination and humour. Her extensive far-flung family was vitally important to her. In turn, her warmth and selflessness endeared her to family and Friends, who often sought her wise advice. Her influence on succeeding generations is profound. Special thanks to the staff at Glenwarren, caretakers and Doctor Luckhurst for their devoted care. Cellist Played In Concerts, And For Ballet And Opera

Victoria -- Mary EVENS, a cellist who performed with symphony orchestras across the land during a long career, has died in Victoria. She was 96.
Her orchestral résumé included the Victoria Symphony as principal cello in the 1950s, after which she joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as assistant principal cello from 1961 to 1970. She was then principal cello for London Symphony Orchestra (now Orchestra London) until 1979. At each of these she was joined by her husband, Clifford EVENS, a violinist and conductor.
Mary Edith BUCKLIN was born on February 10, 1911, at Guatemala City, Guatemala, where her father, George Augustus BUCKLIN, Jr.,▲ was the American consul-general. Her mother, the former Emiline PORTER, hailed from Keene, Ontario, near Peterborough. Mr. BUCKLIN later served as a consul at Victoria, during which time his daughter won the gold medal for excellence in solo performance at the 1929 Victoria music festival.
Her childhood education owed more to Baedeker than to the ABCs, as she lived in France, Germany, Canada, Mexico and New Zealand. She spoke four languages by age 10, by which time she had already taken up the stringed instrument that would be her lifelong avocation as well as passion. She studied in London; Paris; Koblenz, Germany and in Seattle, Washington. Among her instructors was Kurt Reher, familiar to longhairs of a later age for having recorded with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
She earned a master's degree in music at Mills College at Berkeley, California., and later held a position on the faculty of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario
After her husband's death in 1980, she played with the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, as well as the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra.
Among her former pupils is Christopher SHARPE, who is the associate principal cello for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony.
Mrs. EVENS died on December 23. She leaves a son, two daughters, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husbands Reginald Ellery Percy HAMMOND and Clifford Wallis EVENS. She was also predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

In her 89th year, Frances Mary HAMMOND (née LAIRD) of Guelph, Ontario passed away peacefully at the Nottingham Retirement Home, The Elliott Community in Guelph on March 5, 2008. Pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Kenneth William HAMMOND, she is survived by her loving children; daughter Doreen Frances HAMMOND of Kitchener, and sons Kenneth Laird HAMMOND of Bermuda and Bruce William HAMMOND of Walkerton. Dear mother-in-law to Margaret Frances HAMMOND (née PAYNE,) she was a loving grandmother to Jenny Christina HAMMOND, Jeremy▼ David▼ HAMMOND and Matthew Payne HAMMOND. Frances▼ was pre-deceased by her brothers John LAIRD, Wilbur▼ LAIRD and James LAIRD. Unfailingly gracious, Fran was a remarkable woman, a gentle and compassionate person who quietly and deeply affected the lives of those who had the good fortune to know her. She will be greatly missed by family and Friends. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow at a later date. A celebration of Frances' life will be held on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 and will be announced at a later date. (predeceased by Wade). Jackie was the consummate mother of Hamish (WHITE/WHYTE,) Janet (STRONG,) John WHITE/WHYTE (deceased) and Christopher (WHITE/WHYTE) (their father the late J.B. WHITE/WHYTE Jr.) and the very proud grandmother of Brendan WHITE/WHYTE; splendid sister of Charlotte GRAHAM and indulgent aunt of Amanda, Victoria (Brian) MITCHELL and Jeremy (Jaye). Educated at Miss Railton's Primary, Whitney Public School, Havergal and UCU of T (Alpha Phi) her studies were interrupted by her years as an air traffic controller in the Royal Canadian Air Force Graduating from Fine Arts she worked for the Art Gallery of Ontario and while raising her children became much involved in theatre: As a member of Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, hers was the voice of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Howdy-Doody in the 50s and 60s. Many a play at the University of Toronto Alumnae Theatre had her on stage, backstage, painting sets, organizing costumes and everything else. Jackie's, and then Wade's interest in theatre extended to San Miguel de Allende where they spent the nasty months of winter for many years. As Jackie WHITE/WHYTE, she supported the Canadian Mental Health Association as a fund raiser, the Parkinson Foundation and was instrumental in raising funds to pay the 'Huronia Helpers" for the appeal to keep the Hurona Regional Centre from closing. Her Friends are everywhere, from her Tanamakoon Days, theatre, various alumnae associations, summers in Rosseau, and being a 'Toronto girl' for a long, long time. Always hospitable, loyal, loving, understanding and so elegant; we've lost a good friend. A service of committal prior to interment in the Mt.
