Passed away peacefully on Sunday March 30 2008 surrounded by
his loving and devoted family. Art was born in Nelson, British
Columbia and is predeceased by his parents Robert and Beatrice
JOY and by his brothers Bob and George and his sisters Constance
and Ada. He joined the army in 1940 and following his discharge
in 1945 he returned to his journalistic career in Vancouver and
Toronto with Miller Freeman (California), Maclean Hunter (Vancouver
and Toronto) and Southam Business Publications (Toronto). He
was highly respected and successful in his field. Following his
retirement he formed Arjed Communications. Art had a great love
of the outdoors, particularly fly fishing and fly tying. He also
had a natural talent for oil and water colour painting, sketching
and cartooning. Art leaves his wife Jean, son David and wife
Martha, daughter Jeanie and husband David and grand_sons Jordan
and Richard
BRACE.
Private family services and interment are
to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia at a later date. The family
wishes to express their appreciation to Doctor
GROSSMAN and the
staff at Baycrest Hospital palliative care unit for the outstanding
care given to Art and the sincere support given to the family.

MCINNES/MCINNIS on Tuesday, March 18, 2008. Born in
Halifax, he was the eldest
son of the late Donald
MCINNES/MCINNIS and
Betty (ROWAN-
LEGG.) He is survived by his wife, Beverley

of 48 years; three sons: David (Julie

(Joan CULLUM), Prospect; Andrew (Lesia

and eight grand children: Griffin, Kerry, Kesha, Ben, Will, Callie,
Rowan and Charlie. He also leaves two brothers, Stewart (Shirley
BOWNESS), Halifax; Roderick (Daniele
TANGUAY), Toronto; a sister,
Ann (Eric RICE)
Vancouver; and eleven nieces and nephews and
five grand-nieces and grand-nephews. After graduating from Ashbury
College in Ottawa, Hector received his Bachelor of Law degree
from Dalhousie University and his Master of Laws from Harvard
Law School, both with high honours. He was called to the Nova
Scotia Bar in September 1957 and began the practice of law with
McInnes Cooper as the firm's third generation McInnes. Hector
proudly built upon the legacy of his father, Donald
MCINNES/MCINNIS,
and his grandfather, Hector
MCINNES/MCINNIS, for forty years, devoting
his whole career to the firm and its clients. Hector was a gifted
corporate and commercial lawyer, and his advice was much sought
after by companies large and small, local and international in
scope. His contribution was significant with his effort spent
developing the economic cornerstones of the Province of Nova
Scotia. He was appointed Counsel to the firm in 1994. Hector
was always an active member of the legal community, as a member
of the Canadian Bar Association and the Nova Scotia Barristers'
Society. He also contributed his experience to many volunteer
organizations, serving as President of the Halifax Young Men's
Christian Association, President of Symphony Nova Scotia, Chairman
of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Vice President of Neptune
Theatre. Hector served as a director and officer of numerous
Canadian corporations. He was a member of St. Matthew's United
Church, the Halifax Club, Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Ashburn
Golf Club and Chester Yacht Club. Hector retired to his beloved
Chester and spent many recent winters at The St. Andrews Club
in Delray Beach, Florida, enjoying his time with family and Friends
(and every crossword puzzle and book he could get his hands on).
In accordance with Hector's wishes, a private family service
will take place with internment at Fairview Cemetery, Halifax.
A visitation for Friends and colleagues will be held at the home

Frederic passed away peacefully at South Granville Park Lodge
on January 29 after three years of battle with vascular dementia.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife Marianne and their
children Fabrice and Caroline, his two daughters Claire and Eve
from his first marriage with Gloria, and
by Eve's children Sarah,
Rachel, David and Gabriel. Frederic was born in France where
he completed his undergraduate studies. From 1941 to 1945 he
participated in the French underground during the German occupation.
He moved to the United States in 1949 after serving for four
years at the rank of captain in the French military government
in Berlin. He acquired a Ph.D in Romance Literature in 1954 at
Berkeley (university of California). That same year he joined
the faculty at Swarthmore College (Pennsylvania) as a professor
of French Literature. In 1967, he was appointed Professor of
French Literature at the University of British Columbia. He was
an esteemed and influential teacher of twentieth-century French
literature and history and made key contributions to the Honours
and Graduate Studies programs. He was also a highly regarded
research scholar, internationally recognized for his writings
on the political and intellectual history of France pre and post-war
era.
Frederic loved simple things -- a swim in the ocean, the trees,
long walks in the Normandy countryside, Vancouver's Pacific Spirit
Park and beaches, his books, the fireplace, listening to the
radio and enjoying good food. Students, Friends and family will
remember his soft, warm voice and distinctive, elegant way of
speaking, which, along with his unique wit, he kept until the
very last days of his life. His family wants to express their
deep gratitude to South Granville Park Lodge in Vancouver for
their most kind and wonderful care, and especially to Amelita
Berretta for the loving care, company and support she gave Frederic
during the last four years of his life.
