HARVEY,
David (1909-2008)
Peacefully in his 99th year at the Westbury Long Term Care Facility
on Saturday, March 8th, after a very long and full life. Loved
brother of Kay
HORNSBY and husband Joe, Violet, the late Doris,
Betty, Jessie and George. Brother-in-law to Winnie. Beloved uncle
of the late Jimmy
GRADWELL.
Dearly missed by nieces and nephews,
Dianne (Ralph) and family, Sue (Henry), David, Michael (Henrietta)
and family. Long time cherished friend of Reva Lawry. David was
born in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 25, 1909. He was a man
of many talents - a dancer, singer, actor, comedian, prize fighter
and world traveller. He arrived in Canada in 1922, and at age
13 found himself a job at the Glidden Paint Factory. This career
proved not exciting enough for a boy of many talents. It was
the vaudeville era and David felt the pull of show business,
so he began performing in amateur talent contests where he won
first prize, a grand total of three dollars, after singing "The
Bells Are Ringing for Me and
My Gal". He then realized that performing
was more enjoyable than pouring paint. For years after that he
picked up a few dollars here and there as a singer and entertainer
in the Toronto theatres. When his dancing and singing routine
wasn't paying enough, he took to the waters to work the tour
boat excursions on the Cayuga and Chippewa as a mess boy, serving
the crew. At age 20, David wanted more excitement in his life
and with the stock market crashing and jobs being few, he decided
to ride the cars of the railway to Alaska, the Yukon and then
on to Vancouver. The next journey in his life took him to stage
and television. He performed in many commercials for Esso, Leons,
Speedy Lube, and Nokia. He appeared in many movies including
Mrs. Sofel's Daughter, Midnight Eyes, Sea of Love, and Moonstruck
as well as the theatrical productions of Tommy Boy, Goosebumps,
Stepping Out, Taking the Heat and the television series King
of Kensington and many SCTV series. David was central to
the formation of Club Milango Tango Club in Toronto, as well
as co-founder of the Radio Artists of Toronto Society and in
1942, co-founder of the Alliance of Canadian Television Radio
Actors, now known as ACTRA. David's passion for travel took
him to numerous countries of the world. He was not shy and always
willing to try anything once. This included sailing, skiing,
scuba diving, riding elephants in India and camels in Turkey.
He spent many years living abroad in New Zealand, Indonesia,
Bali and Italy. Unfortunately, he was not able to live out his
dream to travel to Patagonia. David was a fun loving, active
gentleman with a wonderful sense of humour. He had a never-ending
lust for life, travel and dancing. The family wishes to sincerely
thank the 2nd floor staff at The Westbury who treated David with
much care, love, dignity and Friendship during his time there.
Visitation to celebrate David's life will take place on Saturday,
March 15th at Turner and Porter Funeral Hom (Butler Chapel), 4933 Dundas
Street West, Toronto (between Islington and Kipling Aves.) from
1: 00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a service at 3:00 p.m. and a reception
to follow. The family gratefully declines the acceptance of flowers,
and asks that donations be made to the Dorothy Ley Hospice, Toronto
Grace Hospital or a charity of your choice.

from the University of New Brunswick in 1955, with a B.Sc. in

throughout England and Europe before returning to Canada to their

a beautiful Rhododendron garden which they enjoyed for 15 years.
They moved to Powell River in 2004 to be closer to their children

GRAHAM,
Maggi
Artist, art teacher, poet, mother, seti (Arabic for grandmother),
social activist, wife, lover. Born August 7, 1932, in Aberdeen,
Scotland. Died August 12, 2007, in Vancouver of pneumonia and
Alzheimer's disease, aged 75.
By Duncan GRAHAM,
Page▼ L8
Maggi was fostered at two years old by the Lawie family in Aberdeenshire,
Scotland, who saw her through art school.
We met during a summer hotel job in the Highlands when I was
doing a forestry course. I immigrated to Canada in 1956, and
Maggi followed in a few months.
The next year we were married at Toronto's Old City Hall by a
justice of the peace who smoked a cigar and answered the phone
during the brief ceremony. No matter - the wedding was followed
by a month's honeymoon driving to Mexico City and the art colony
of San Miguel de Allende.
Maggi returned to Aberdeen for the birth of our first son, Malcolm,
so the Lawie family could see the new baby.
After being back in Canada for a few months, we were off to Stanstead
College, an independent boarding school on the Quebec-Vermont
border, where I had been given a teaching position. Three more
children followed - another boy, Lomond, and two girls, Fiona
and Rona.
Maggi's 27-year career as an art teacher began in 1964, when
she was asked to set up an art department at Stanstead College.
Getting her purple motorcycle in 1985 fulfilled a lifelong dream.
In full black leather, she cruised the back roads of Vermont
and Quebec in the summers.
Maggi was interested in dowsing (or psychic divining), and was
concerned about the state of the planet. After attending an Amnesty
International Canada meeting, she helped form a local Quebec-Vermont
boundary chapter.
We found the Unitarian Universalist Church, with its no-creed
outlook, to be our style.
Maggi developed her poetry once we retired to Vancouver in 1994,
giving passionate performances. Seeing with new eyes, new vistas,
were the themes of her poetry. Her art, now mainly collage, became
a major interest, and she gave and took classes. Her writings
and poetry emphasized the moment - the only one we have. Appreciate
and sense it and write down every day what you have to be grateful
for.
Lomond's death in 1993 of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
was devastating. Maggi volunteered with AIDS Vancouver and
the Vancouver Friends For Life Society.
In 2003, the first signs of Alzheimer's appeared, and
in September,
2006, it was time for her to move into a care facility.
After two falls and broken bones, her decline was rapid. On August
9 last year, she spoke her first complete sentence in weeks to
Rona and me: "I am going to die." It was a decision, a statement.
She passed on without distress with Fiona and me by her side.
Duncan GRAHAM is Maggi's husband.

SAINT_AMAND,
John
Raymond
Jr.
By Peggie GRAHAM and Marilyn
KEDDY,
Page▲ L6
John Raymond
SAINT_AMAND
Jr.
Union organizer, teacher, partner,
brother, uncle, friend. Born January 29, 1943, in Galt, Ontario
Died October 31, 2007, in Kentville, Nova Scotia, of cancer,
aged 64.
John SAINT_AMAND approached his death the same way he lived his
life: joyfully, selflessly, fearlessly and with great integrity.
His room was the busiest on the ward as he welcomed visiting
family and Friends. Tears were for outside the room. Within,
there was laughter, stories, reminiscences and his continuing
concern for others. He wrote his own obituary so he could honour
those who had inspired and assisted him, but more to spare his
partner, Marilyn, the task.
This concern for others was a hallmark of John's life and led
him into a career organizing in the Canadian trade-union movement.
John graduated with a master's in sociology from Dalhousie University
in Halifax. He taught at Mohawk College in Hamilton for many
years and later at Dalhousie.
During his Mohawk years he became interested in organizing campaigns
with trade unions associated with the Confederation of Canadian
Unions. John left his teaching job to volunteer to help Cape
Breton coal miners form their own Canadian Mineworkers Union.
Although they did not win the vote to change unions, John always
saw success in people having the confidence to join together
to fight for what they believed in. From 1985 to 1989 he organized
in the "pink ghetto" of child-care workers and staff at women's
shelters.
John met Marilyn
KEDDY, who became his life partner for 32 years.
When they opted for retirement, they took on a major challenge:
the top-to-bottom renovation of an old house that was to be their
new residence. Unfortunately, they had just a few short months
to enjoy their handiwork before John was diagnosed with cancer.
An avid fisherman and outdoorsman, John delighted in taking visitors
out in his boat with his dogs. He was also a talented musician
who played viola. As Marilyn remarked when she was gathering
photographs to display at the celebration of John's life, "There
was no problem finding good pictures of John." In almost every
one he was smiling - on picket lines, in China, on camping trips,
at conferences and conventions and in classrooms.
His wholehearted contribution to the trade-union movement was
recognized with the establishment of three annual John St. Amand
bursaries from the Confederation of Canadian Unions. It was a
tribute he accepted with characteristic modesty.
Family, Friends, federal and provincial politicians, academic
and community colleagues filled the Mahone Bay fire hall to celebrate
the too-short life of this remarkable man. John would have loved
it.
Peggie GRAHAM is John's friend, and Marilyn
KEDDY is his partner.

HAMILL,
Philip (1929-2008)
Born in Dundalk, Ireland, Phil studied at University College
Galway, where he met his beloved Nancy, with whom he would share
the next 53 years. He immigrated to Canada in 1957, settling
in Ottawa where he had a long and enjoyable career at the National
Research Council. Phil was an accomplished scholar and scientist,
yet he valued his family and Friends most of all. He will be
remembered for his remarkable spirit, his unfaltering optimism
and his extraordinary joy for living. Phil was the best of company
- articulate, witty, wise, generous and so very kind. His pleasures
included literature, tennis, art, onions, writing, whisky, a
broad spectrum of music, scotch broth, theatre, wordplay, cooking
and solving crossword puzzles with Nancy and son Philip. He lived
every day as we all wish we could - fully, happily and thankfully.
Phil will be hugely missed by his wife Nancy, sons Philip and

UCU of T (Alpha Phi) her studies were interrupted
by her years as an air traffic controller in the Royal Canadian
Air Force Graduating from Fine Arts she worked for the Art Gallery
of Ontario and while raising her children became much involved
in theatre: As a member of Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television
and Radio Artists, hers was the voice of Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation's Howdy-Doody in the 50s and 60s. Many a play at
the University of Toronto Alumnae Theatre had her on stage, backstage,
painting sets, organizing costumes and everything else. Jackie's,

years. As Jackie
