NIXON,
Annie McPhail "Nan" (née
McLEAN)
Nan NIXON passed away peacefully at Errinrung Residence in Thornbury
on Monday May 26, 2008 at the age of 93. Born in Greenock, Scotland,
she was the daughter of John and Lilius (née
DELGARNO)
McLEAN.
At the age of 15 Nan immigrated to Canada with her parents and
siblings. Although Nan received a limited education and faced
many challenges in her earlier life, as was so often the case
in those years, she was able to fulfill her most important dreams,
those of raising her family and being a kind and loving mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother. She is remembered by her family
and Friends as a wise woman whose patience and forgiveness set
examples for all to follow. She loved her home and ensured that
it was always a welcoming environment for all and her homemaking
skills were passed as a legacy to her children. Her home was
always clean, the treadle sewing machine rarely resting as she
made and re-made clothing for her family and the results of her
knitting and quilting were cherished by all who received her
homemade gifts. Above all Nan loved to play with the grandchildren
sharing their laughter while enjoying checkers, dominoes, snakes
and ladders and many card games. She encouraged her family to
strive to succeed by endeavoring to do their best at whatever
task might be in front of them. She shared her spirit with the
gentle 'toughness' that was her inspiring strength of character.
Nan was predeceased by her husband Robert Henry
NIXON in 1956
when she was a woman of 41 years of age and she remained undaunted
in her dedication that her family should know the warmth and
security of home. She is remembered as a loving mother by her
daughters Dorothy
FROST of Thornbury, Isobel
LEVACQUE of Collingwood
and Debra Nixon
McLEOD of Nottawa and she was predeceased by
her son Bill
NIXON.
She is lovingly remembered as a dear mother-in-law
by her daughter-in-law Betty
(SANGSTER)
Nixon
VANDERLINDEN of
Clayhurst,
British
Columbia, and by her son-in-law Roger
McLEOD
of Nottawa. She will also be remembered by her brother Jim
McLEAN
of Parksville, British Columbia and by sisters-in-law May
McLEAN
and Joy McLEAN, both of Meaford. Nan was also predeceased by
sons-in-law Bill
FROST,
Ray
LEVACQUE and Dale
VANDERLINDEN and
by brothers and sisters John
McLEAN
(Isabelle,)
Jean
SMITH (Harvey,)
May MARTIN (Ray), David
McLEAN, Tom
McLEAN (Ethel), and Bill
McLEAN.
Nan will be most affectionately remembered as the devoted
matriarch of her family including her seven grandchildren and
thirteen great-grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews
and their families. As Nan desired, a family service of committal
and interment of her cremated remains, officiated by Reverend
Dr. Brian GOODINGS of Grace United Church, was conducted at Thornbury-Clarksburg
Union Cemetery on Friday May 30 where Nan's ashes were interred
with her late husband. If so desired, and in memory of Nan, memorial
donations to Thameswood Lodge, a residence for cancer patients
in London, Ontario, would be appreciated and may be made through
the Ferguson Funeral Home, The Valley Chapel, in Thornbury to
whom arrangements have been entrusted.

GOODMAN,
Doctor
William
E., B.A., M.D., C.M., L.M.C.C., (F.R.C.S.C,)
D.A.B.O.
On Monday, June 23, 2008 at his home. Beloved husband of the
late Florence (née
SAMUELS)
GOODMAN.
Loving father and father-in-law
of David and Jeanette and her daughter Julie, Richard, Janis
and the late Robert
GOODMAN. Dear brother of Betty
BOCHNER, and
the late Molye
SCHWARTZ,
Mosie
GOODMAN, and Irving
GOODMAN. Brother,
husband, father and friend to multitudes - in more ways than
will ever be known. The world was better for his being here.
He made his way. In his own words:
A man of eclectic tastes, his interests ranged from classical
guitar music (he was a founding member of the Classical Guitar
Society of Toronto), to folk music (involved in the advisory
board of Mariposa until his death, he continued to attend its
annual concerts, as well as others in Winnipeg, Newport, Fox
Hollow and Vancouver). During World War 2, while stationed in
Regina as an officer with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps,
he became addicted to country and western music, as well. He
took to motorcycle-riding at age 45, and owned and rode until
1989, a vintage Kawasaki. An honours B.A. in Economics and Political
Science, and M.D. from McGill as well as becoming an Ear, Nose
and Throat Specialist at the pioneering University of Illinois
Otolaryngology Group. Subsequently, he became an assistant professor
in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto (while
still practising medicine) at the age of 56.
In the early 1980's, recognizing the marked increase in intermarriages
resulting from changes in social attitudes and customs in a society
now more open to Jews, he tried to start a non-profit, non-judgemental,
non-institutional, multi-faceted introduction service for Jewish
singles of all ages. For his part, his happy marriage to Florence
lasted almost 60 years.
Although coldly rational to a fault, he passionately espoused
causes in which he believed, and spent much time and substance
in personal efforts on their behalf, (the battle of Beth Tzedec
the fight against bureaucratic encroachment in the health-care
field; the campaign to return real education to the schools and
universities; and the struggle to make politicians financially
responsible in their decision-making). His strong opinions, which
he refused to dilute for purposes of expediency, were reflected
in numerous articles published in newspapers and journals in
Canada, the U.S., Finland, Australia, France, Britain, and Switzerland
in many speaking engagements, T.V. and radio interviews, and
debates at home and abroad; and in personal correspondence with
well-known politicians, economists, educators and social philosophers.
He consistently refused to practise medicine as a service of
the state and when Ontario's infamous Bill 94 was passed in 1986,
resigned his position as Assistant Professor in the Faculty of
Medicine at the University of Toronto, quit practice, and closed
his office permanently. Patients persisted in requesting his
return - even two weeks ago.
His multilingual capacities, as well as his never-ending curiosity,
made him an avid and accomplished traveller. This curiosity also
projected him, at age 60, into an unsuccessful attempt to start
a singles introduction service and, at age 64, into pursuit of
proficiency in the field of Macintosh micro-computers. By the
time of his death, he had over 70 publications to his credit,
on diverse topics such as abortion, primary and university education,
politics and politicians, age and aging, computers in medicine,
feminism and the war between the sexes, alternative therapies,
the coming inter-generational conflict, travel opportunities
for disabled seniors, options for the blind from AMD, the
Canadian identity, electioneering in Canada, etc. As the long-term
effects of an aging population became apparent, he made numerous
television appearances debating the pros and cons of "dying with
dignity" with Jesuit priests, Right-to-Life Society officials,
spokespersons for the Catholic arch-diocese of Toronto, lawyers
for the disabled and academic ethicists.
A lifelong admirer of the quality of "joie-de-vivre", his favourite
toast was: "Salud, dineroy amory el tiempo para gustarlos". He
revelled in living life to the fullest and was grateful, as are
we, that he survived long enough and successfully enough to enjoy
them all. In anticipation of death, he was fond of quoting the
late poet and engineer Neil George: "If you will, remember me
occasionally - I would like that; but no mourning, please. Death
in old age is a solution, not a tragedy."
For the last nearly 20 years, he was "the Doc" at "The Breakfast
Club" - an eclectic group of eccentrics who started their days
breaking bread (bagels) and "solving" the world's problems. Ave
atque vale!

GOODWILLIE,
David
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of
David GOODWILLIE on June 29, 2008. David is survived by his sister,
Lois GOODWILLIE, of Knowlton, Quebec; nieces, nephews, numerous
Friends, and business associates.
David was born in Montreal on February 27, 1940 and attended
Sir George William University. After graduation, he worked for
Monsanto and was transferred to Vancouver in the early seventies.
His business life took him down many different roads from managing
a lounge, to brokering businesses.
David travelled for work and for pleasure, with his outgoing
personality and friendly nature; he made Friends wherever he
went.
Generous and caring, eccentric and honest to a fault, David's
door was always open to Friends or anyone in need. David was
mentor to young and old. If someone needed help, he was the first
to offer a hand.
Athlete and storyteller, his greatest passions were skiing, running,
and reading. If he wasn't skiing at Whistler, he could be spotted
jogging on the seawall, or hiking up the Grouse Grind. If you
happened to be accompanying him, he would be telling you a great
story, the summary of the latest book he was reading, or what
he had just seen on Charlie Rose, all without missing a beat.
David was a director of the Zajac Foundation for many years
if desired donations made to the Zajac Foundation would be appreciated.
A celebration of David's life will be held in September; the
time, date, and place will be announced at a later date.

GOORTS,
John
In Loving Memory of John
GOORTS
January 28th, 2005
Your heart can be empty because you can't see John, or you can
be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow, and live yesterday, or you
can be happy for tomorrow, because of yesterday
You can remember John and only that he's gone, or you can cherish
his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,
or you can do what he'd want: Smile, Open Your Eyes, Love and
Go on.

Family
