BAINE,
Eleanor (neé
LUCAS) (1910-2008)
Died peacefully one week short of her 98th birthday in her home
in Toronto. Eleanor was the second daughter of Gavin Allen and
Maude LUCAS (neé
PATON.)
She was educated at Toronto Teachers
College and taught elementary school in Markham. Mother grew
up in Lindsay spending summers at Sturgeon Point travelling there
by boat before there was road access and enjoying life long Friendships
from those years. Later summers were spent on Tobacco Lake on
Manitoulin Island which fostered Friendships that have endured
to this day. With her husband Jack she raised her family in Guelph
and Toronto. Eleanor volunteered with the Red Cross during the
war, was a member with the Imperial Order of the Daughters of
the Empire, and was a longtime volunteer at the Wellesley Hospital
where she produced many beautiful and coveted Teddy Bears for
the shop. We feel extremely blessed to have had Mother in our
lives for so long. She was a remarkable woman with an acute intelligence
and an amazing vocabulary - the result of doing the Globe and
Mail Cryptic Crossword in ink for many years until a few weeks
before her death. Her knowledge of the rules of grammar and punctuation
were formidable. She always read the Globe and Mail and enjoyed
discussing the issues of the day. Eleanor was predeceased by
her devoted husband Captain John A.
BAINE
(Jack) in 1996. Survived
by her children Beverley
HARRISON,
Barbara
HINDSON (Robert) and
John BAINE.
She leaves three grandchildren - Amy
GOLBERG (Cam,)
Kiera HINDSON and Robin
HINDSON and two great-grandchildren Grace
and Madison. Mother leaves behind many people who will miss her
dearly as she was an inspiration and example to us all. Cremation
has taken place. The memorial service will be held in Rosedale
Presbyterian Church, 129 Mount Pleasant Road (corner of South
Drive) on Wednesday, April 2nd at 2 p.m. Reception will follow
at the Church. Internment will take place later in the summer
at Gordon Cemetery Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island. The family wishes
to thank Caregivers Unlimited for their unfailing compassionate
care of our Mother. They were always there when we needed them.
We also wish to thank the Temmy Latner Center for Palliative
Care Team of Mount Sinai Hospital. If desired, memorial donations
may be made to The Gore Bay Museum, Gore Bay, Ontario P0P 1H0
or The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, P.O. Box 26323,
Station Brm, Toronto, Ontario M7Y 4R1. Mother will be remembered
with great affection and respect by all who knew her. Condolences
and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

'She was just a bright star full of life'
By Jenni DUNNING,
Wed.,
June 25, 2008
Shelby GOLDIE couldn't stay there for long.
She surveyed the accident scene -- broken CDs and strewn belongings
that had flown out of the car her friend Christie
ROSE drove
before it went out of control, flipped and smashed into a tree.
She died later of her injuries.
GOLDIE was one of 10 people to congregate at the site on Fingal
Line between Centre and Oneida roads Monday night, looking for
answers to Saturday's crash.
"No one really knows what happened. We tried to observe and put
the pieces of the puzzle together," she said. "We got an eerie
feeling and had to leave."
ROSE, 18, of Fingal, was a popular student at Parkside Collegiate
Institute in Saint Thomas and a forward for the London Devilettes
intermediate AA hockey team.
She'll be remembered as a strong-willed, funny person, Friends
said.
"Through it all, everyone was like, 'She's a fighter. She's so
strong,'" said friend and teammate Brittany
PATON, 21.
PATON said she would need a dictionary to describe how wonderful
her friend was. "She was the kind of person you met and wanted
to be Friends with right away. She made you feel good about yourself."
PATON said
ROSE loved working out and doing impressions of actors
in her favourite movies, such as She's the Manitoba
In their last conversation, she said,
ROSE talked about how happy
she was and about plans for after graduation.
She said she's in shock her friend is gone. "You don't want to
believe it. It's kind of an emotional roller coaster."
ROSE's school and community are reeling from the crash. About
200 people visited Parkside for a memorial yesterday to share
memories and photographs.
"She was just a bright star full of life and will be missed by
anyone who was blessed to have known her," said principal Paul
McKENZIE.
"I'm sure it's every parent's worst nightmare. It's every principal's,
as well."
ROSE is survived by her parents, Melanie Ann
(SNOWSELL) and Dan,
brother Joseph and sister Lauren.
Visitation is at Parkside on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral is at the school Saturday at 11: 30 a.m.
