RUMBALL, Doris Elizabeth, B.Sc.N.
Doris was a dedicated nursing teacher and professional, initially of Hamilton General Hospital and subsequently Mohawk College School of Nursing. Over the course of Doris' life and career she inspired many others through her cheerful dedication and deep generosity. She worked tirelessly for many years at First-Pilgrim United Church, where she also developed lifelong Friendships which were very important to her. Doris was also an award-winning gardener, and deeply loved and cared for birds and all of nature. A loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, Doris' sweet smile and quick wit remained to the end, and will be missed by many. Doris was born January 7th, 1924, and died March 3rd, 2008, aged 84. Daughter of the late Alvira (née COLGAN) and Carl RUMBALL, of Hamilton and earlier Brantford. Much loved sister of John K. RUMBALL (deceased) and of sister-in-law Daphne A. RUMBALL (nee MILLER) of Ancaster, Ontario and now Victoria, British Columbia. Beloved aunt of the late Michael RUMBALL (Susan,) niece Jan (RUMBALL) GARNETT, and nephew Chris RUMBALL (Ruth) and their families, all now of British Columbia. Doris was also predeceased by her two very close Friends and nursing colleagues, Wilda PINKNEY and Barbara BROWN. Doris' family and Friends gratefully acknowledge the faithful love and late-life caring of two of her wonderful Friends, the Rev. Allison HAYNES and Mary Lou COLLETT, and are grateful for the gentle care that she received in her final years at Saint_Joseph's Villa, Dundas. Visitation will be at First-Pilgrim United Church from 11: 00 a.m.-12 p.m., followed by a service of remembrance at First-Pilgrim United Church at 12 p.m. Friday, March 7th. Passed away suddenly, on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at home. Mourned by his parents Jack and Ruth GARNETT, sister Joan THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON (Alistair THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON, Oshawa,) and his beloved daughter Sara GARNETT. David was a former Manager at Vistek Toronto, and a talented photographer. He was admired by his Friends and family for his independence and courage in fighting Multiple Sclerosis and leukemia for many years. Thanks to the medical and nursing staff at Princess Margaret Hospital over the past six months, and also to the tremendous support network in the community. Visitation will be held at the "Scarborough Chapel" of McDougall and Brown, 2900 Kingston Road (east of St. Clair Ave. E.) on Thursday, July 3 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Friday, July 4 at 2 p.m. If desired, the family would appreciate donations in David's memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.

BESTALL, Stephanie Anna (née DOMAGALY)
Stephanie passed away at home in London, Ontario on June 26, 2008, loving her husband Pat "til the 12th of never" and very proud of her son Sean. Born in Munich, Germany August 17, 1947. Married in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on September 17, 1965 to W. Patrick BESTALL, son of the late Clare BESTALL and Al BESTALL who started CKCY radio and the world's first phone in talk show. She never stopped praying with love for her now deceased parents Anne KOVACS and Zoltan KOVACS, (of whom she was so proud for his success as father and active member of the community) for her brothers and sisters, still living, Mark CHOJNOWSKI, Leon CHOJNOWSKI, Stanley CHOJNOWSKI, Gabriel GARNISS, Susan WEIGAL and "Toots" KOVACS; and finally for her aunt in Calgary Maggie GENNINGS. She wanted us to remember her great affection for her uncle Dirk, her nieces Lori and Cathy, "mom Vi" and Art, and for Friends of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in London ("Cathy the best thing you ever gave me was godchildren"). During her last days of suffering from cancer, Stephanie said she hoped all the foster children she cared for since 1976 will be as blessed as she was by a Heavenly Father who doesn't know the meaning of defeat. Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 7: 00-9:00 p.m. at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Rd. Died of heart failure in Pickering, Ontario. John was the son of Jesse M. FEATHERSTONHAUGH and Philip C. GARRATT Sr. He is predeceased by his brother Philip C. GARRATT Jr. and is survived by the mother of his children, Frances Field GARRATT, his sister Sally Garratt VERNON, his five children: Lynne, David, Lesley, Sally, Kathy, his six grandchildren: Jason, Jamie, Kristen, Jenny, John, Kejah and his three great-grand_sons: Nathan, Arlin and Owen. John was an entrepreneur, an outdoorsman and a talented musician. Among his accomplishments, he founded Garratt Aircraft - the maker of the Avro Aeroparts, was president of Kingsgate Motors and created 88 Keys Piano School. He gave many people joy with his stories, his humour and his piano-playing right till the very end. There will be a memorial gathering to honour his gregarious and fun-loving nature at his beloved Lake of Bays. A summer date will follow. Dear mother-in-law of Sandra DICKER of London, and the late Don ROSS. Step-mother of Robert BOLT of Embro, and Ruth Ann BEER and her husband Charles of Saint Thomas. Loved sister of Kay WAGNER of Saint Thomas, late Margaret SPRUCE, late Stanley GARRAWAY, and the late Bill GARRAWAY. Also fondly remembered by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Born in Saint Thomas, November 11, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (ABDEY) and David GARRAWAY. PATTERSON, Lorne Aldon
A True Gentleman! With great sadness to many, Lorne Aldon PATTERSON passed away on July 24, 2008 at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Bracebridge. In his 94th year, he was summering in Muskoka at his beloved cottage, Maywood. Predeceased by his wife Betty, brothers Donald and Jack and sisters Margaret CAMPBELL and Shirley JONES, he will be greatly missed by his remaining sister Irene GARRETT, his son John PATTERSON (Sue,) daughters Jane MacLENNAN (John) and Susi PATTERSON, his six grandchildren, Christopher and Jeffrey PATTERSON, Matthew, Michael, Katherine and Rosannagh MacLENNAN and his dear friend, Lee BURNS. Lorne graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Toronto in 1940 where he was the leading member of the University of Toronto Gymnastics Team. As the Canadian All Round Gymnastics (Werry Cup) Champion, he earned a spot on the 1940 Canadian Olympic Team which was cancelled with World War 2. (He was thrilled to watch his granddaughter, Rosannagh, earn her berth for the Beijing 2008 Olympics for Trampoline.) As War broke out, his thesis on fuel injection was sent to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was to do his Masters but as a mechanical engineer, he was positioned in Guelph at Federal Wire. In Guelph, he became a Commanding Officer in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps Ajax where he prepared many men for positions in the navy and was still involved until he was 80. He resided in Guelph in the home he built on Forest Street for 65 years. During his retirement years, he summered in Muskoka and wintered in Venice, Florida. He will always be remembered for his engineering projects, his outward focus on Friends, his wise counsel and active lifestyle. He was the oldest driver featured in the video at the Grace and Speed Museum, Gravenhurst, where he was photographed doing what he loved most. Friends may call at the Turner and Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Kipling and Islington Aves.) on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Etobicoke on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 2 o'clock. Born in Burlington, Ontario, she was the only daughter of the late Elizabeth and John RAE. Beloved▼ wife of the late Francis J. "Peter" McPETRIE. Predeceased by her brothers, Donald RAE (Dorothy,) Mississauga and Edgar RAE (Emma,) Ottawa, and sister-in law Elizabeth "Betty" MATHESON (Murdoch " Bud,") London, and nephew Eugene RAE, Toronto. Fondly remembered by her nieces Nancy RAE, Edmonton, Penny KEYES (Bob), Ottawa, and Susan GARRINGTON (Brian,) Cathy ELLEFSEN (David,) her grandnieces Cathy BROPHY (David,) Jacqueline and Julie ELLEFSEN and great-grandnephew Daniel BROPHY, all of London, Ontario. Remembered also by her cousins and many Friends. Dorothy graduated in 1932 from Victoria College, University of Toronto, in French and classics. After graduation, she taught secondary school in Paris, Ontario, until her marriage in 1941. She worked for the Bank of Montreal in Toronto after her marriage and through the war years. Subsequently, she and her husband Peter, an accountant with the Bank of Montreal, enjoyed his various postings with the Bank throughout southwestern Ontario. During her life, Dorothy pursued her interests in painting (founding member of the Lambeth Art Society), travel, gardening, music and watching golf. She will be remembered for her great love of family and her passion for reading and crossword puzzles. On behalf of Dorothy, the family would like to thank the staff at the Ashwood Retirement Residence, Lambeth and the Longworth Nursing Home, London, for their wonderful care and support. Sheila Mabel Garriock (HAYWOOD) died peacefully on March 9, 2008 at Huronview Home for the Aged in Clinton, Ontario. She was 88. Loving wife of the late James GARRIOCK. She is survived by her three sons David (Roberta), Ian, Philip (Mary), her sister Brenda WILLIAMSON and seven grandchildren. She was born March 5, 1920 at Cape Farm near Terrington, Yorkshire, England. She was educated locally and attended boarding school in Belgium prior to entering nursing training in York, England. After becoming a registered nurse in May, 1943 she enlisted with the Royal Air Force and became an Royal Air Force Nursing Sister. She was posted to a nursing station near Bombay, India where she cared for air force personnel involved with the Burma campaign. Whilst in India she met James GARRIOCK and they were married post war on October 24, 1946 in England. On February 7, 1947 she landed in Halifax and joined James on a farm near Pine Grove, Ontario. She obtained her Registered Nurse certification in Ontario and helped support James through medical school. Following James' graduation she assisted him in his medical practice for many years as well as caring for a young family. She was an avid gardener, traveller and had a strong love for animals. She will be greatly missed by her family, Friends and the surrounding community. A memorial service will be held on April 25, 2008 at the Doctor's House Chapel in Kleinburg, Ontario at 11: 00 a.m. with a reception to follow at the Doctor's House. Donations can be made in remembrance of Sheila to the Canadian Red Cross and the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust.

At the end of her long journey, on July 5, 2008, Betty peacefully passed away with her family by her side at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. A Capricorn, she was born January 15, 1922 in Toronto, Ontario. Beloved wife of Lorne, her everlovin' husband and best friend for 63 wonderful years. Dear mother of her adoring daughter Lisa and her husband Jim VANSTONE of Victoria, and her devoted son David of Toronto. Lovingly remembered by her brother William and her grandchildren Edward, Gordon and Gregory. Betty was predeceased by her parents William and Pearl and sister Joan McCOLL. When Lorne returned from the war, he and his cherished Betty were married and raised their family in Toronto, Chatham and Burlington. When the children were grown, Betty both worked and volunteered at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. She approached her endeavors enthusiastically whether it was her work, socializing with Friends and family, bridge, cooking or tending her garden. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Betty's life was held at the Interfaith Chapel, Finnerty Gardens, University of Victoria on Friday July 11, 2008 at 3: 30 p.m. with Rev. Ormand Lavenne officiating. Interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto will take place in September 2008, and a memorial service will be arranged and announced at that time. She was best friend and partner of Harold GARTON for over 60 years. Mrs. GARTON was also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Marjorie loved bowling, riding her bicycle, her home and the theatre. She was a long time member of the Simcoe Little Theatre, a 25 year volunteer for the Port Dover Lighthouse Theatre, former employee of the Long Point Region Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture and Foods. She had a great interest in conservation and the protection and prevention of cruelty to animals and wildlife. Nancy Anne LAYCOCK (née GARVEY,) of R.R.#8, Owen Sound, in her 52nd year. Dearly beloved wife of Ross LAYCOCK. Loving mother of Kristy LAYCOCK and her partner, Ryan CULLEN. Loving daughter of Marjorie GARVEY, of Owen Sound and the late Frank (Diz) GARVEY. Dear sister-in-law of Sharon GARVEY, Carl and Gloria LAYCOCK and Bonnie and Ted CATHRAE. Nancy will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews and her many Friends. Predeceased by her brother, Bryan GARVEY and her in-laws, Lloyd and Mamie LAYCOCK. Nancy was a dedicated employee of GE Security formerly Edwards of Canada for 32 years. Friends may call at the Brian E. Of Union passed away at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital on Sunday, March 9th, 2008, at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, in 65th year. Dearly loved husband of Muriel Jean (WERELEY) WHITNEY and loved father of Michael of Dutton and Ronald of Union. Dear brother of Donald WHITNEY of Vienna, Ken and his wife Nancy WHITNEY of Union and Doris and her husband Jim GARVEY of London. Predeceased by a brother Francis (2005). Sadly missed by 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. David was retired in 2000 from Yarmouth (Central-Elgin), where he worked over 30 years. Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, Saint Thomas where funeral service will be held Thursday at 11: 00 a.m. Private interment in Union Cemetery. Peacefully at the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound on Saturday evening January 26, 2008. In his 93rd year, Rudy COUTURE, loving husband and friend of Jessie COUTURE (née GARVIE) for over seventy years. Loving father of Leora and her husband Keith WILSON and Rudy Jr. and his wife Jean. Dear father-in-law of Sharon (Mrs. Bob COUTURE.) Dear grandfather of sixteen grandchildren and twenty-nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his son Bob, his daughter Marilyn, by his three brothers Jimmy, Charlie and Wilfred and by his six sisters Clara THORNLEY, Irene KELLY, Viola HAWKE and Doris BRIGHAM, Bertha MORTON and Olive COUTURE and by his parents Charlie COUTURE and Eliza Jane (née MOLE.) Rudy enjoyed playing his fiddle. Daughter of the late Edgar and Leona SMITH. Also survived by her stepfather Alex GARVIE of Owen Sound, two sisters Mary Ellen CAMPBELL of Shelburne and Sharon and her husband Rick PAYNE of Fort Frances and her brother Maurice SMITH and his wife Anne of Owen Sound. Predeceased by a sister Susan ADAM/ADAMS. Friends are invited to the Tannahill Funeral Home for visiting on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the chapel on Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock with Doctor Brad CLARK officiating.
