Peacefully at her home on January 14th, 2008 in her 91st year, following an incredibly full life. Beloved wife of the late William Evans ORTVED, M.D. (1996) and sister to Joan Carruthers ROBERTS (Goodridge▼ d.) and the late John Charteris Haig CARTER (Helen▼ d.). As the Leo that she was, she stood like a lioness for her six children, Susan ARMITAGE (Murray▼ d.,) Niels (Stephanie,) Peter (Maureen), Jody (Cathy), Janet IGGERS (Dan), Anne DATTELS (Peter) and loved them all dearly. She enjoyed watching the eleven grandchildren grow up - Kirsten COOKE (Ian,) Kevin ARMITAGE (Linda GALASSO); Allie SWEENEY (Patrick), Chat and John ORTVED; Mira and Matthew ORTVED; Kyla▼ and Dayne ORTVED; Kelly and Adam IGGERS. She was proud to be a great-grandmother of Sophie, Charlie and Jay. Also fondly remembered by Jim SUTTON and Jamie, Liam and Isabelle CAVEN. The▼ family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Doctor Wendy BROWN; and her special caregivers Norma, Maria, Tess, Magda and Lani, one of whom was always at her side for the past 21 months.
After graduating from Havergal College, Mary went on to University College, University of Toronto where she met her husband Bill ORTVED. Her▼ many years of volunteering for the Women's Committee of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra culminated in her term as President. She served on both the Board of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Roy Thomson Hall. She was an enthusiastic member of the Toronto Herb Society, and enjoyed her many weekly bridge games. She led a very active life right up into her late eighties playing tennis twice weekly, skiing at Osler Bluff Ski Club, playing golf at Rosedale Golf Club, skippering her Albacore and Flying Scot, and enjoying the religious morning plunge into Georgian Bay off the rocks of Land's End. Mary's spirit will always rest at her beloved island, Wawonaissa, at Pointe au Baril where she spent every summer of her life. Since 1954 when they bought property at Mansfield, her weekend ritual was roosting at Whippoorwill Hill and she cherished the hills and the many Friends that surrounded her there.
There will be a celebration of her life on Monday January 21st at Eglinton St. George's United Church, corner of Lytton and Duplex Ave. Toronto at 2 o'clock. Reception following at Rosedale Golf Club, 1901 Mt. Pleasant Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

Passed away peacefully at his home in Markdale in his 91st year. Survived by Edith Alice (TUCK) wife of sixty two years. Beloved father of Tom and his wife Lynn (GALBRAITH,) Bill of Markdale, Martha and her husband Jim THORNDYCRAFT of Toronto, Andy and his wife Sherry (BEARDSALL) of Markdale, Mary and her husband John NISAVIC of Waterloo. Survived by his sister Margaret (PRICE) of Toronto. Remembered by his grandchildren Maggie, Daniel, Matthew, Brett, Kieran, Carmen, Lee, Alex and Michael. Sadly missed by great-grandchildren Devin, Owen and Brodie. Predeceased by his parents Arthur and Margaret DUNLOP and grand_son Andrew. Arkle was born on a farm in Moonstone, Ontario, Simcoe County. He left the farm to attend Osgoode Hall where he graduated as a lawyer in 1940. Upon graduation he joined partnership with Walter HARRIS in Markdale, Ontario. He practised law in Markdale for 60 years. He volunteered for service with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in World War 2, where he fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He retired from the army with the rank of Major and was Mentioned in Dispatches and was awarded the Croix De Guerre with Gold Star, for valour. He was very active in the village of Markdale serving as town clerk for 16 years, and village solicitor for 50 years. He was also solicitor for Glenelg and Artemesia townships for many years. He was past president and long time member of the Rotary Club of Markdale. He was also an active volunteer in Minor Hockey and sports in Markdale. His funeral service will take place in Christ Anglican Church in Markdale where he was superintendent of the Sunday school for 16 years and member of the church choir since 1940. Visitation will be held at the May Funeral Home, Markdale Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Flesherton-Markdale Branch 333 Royal Canadian Legion will hold a memorial service in the funeral home Friday at 6: 45 p.m. A Funeral service will be held at Christ Anglican Church, Markdale, Saturday May 3rd at 2: 00 p.m. Interment in Markdale Cemetery. In loving memory of Margaret Isabel Galbraith June 29, 1927 - May 7,
2008. Margaret Galbraith, a resident of Kagawong, died at the Mindemoya
Hospital on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the age of 80 years. She was born
in Carnarvon Township, daughter of the late George and Mary ( Thomson)
Wyman. Margaret had worked as a food manager at MSS for 15 years before
retiring. She had been a member of the Eastern Star since 1972, serving
as organist, in Gore Bay, then Little Current after the amalgamation, Ada
and as Worthy Matron for 2 terms. Margaret enjoyed music, both singing
and playing, reading, cooking and her flower garden. Her greatest love
was her family and spending time with them. She will be sadly missed, but
many memories will be cherished. Dearly loved wife of Bruce Galbraith.
Loving and loved mother of Anita of Toronto and Herb and his wife
Margaret also of Toronto. Special sister of Marjorie (Wilson) Volpel of
Peterborough. Also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased
by sister Marion and brothers Lloyd and Don Wyman. Visitation was held at

Born Aug 21, 1919, in Ukraine. Stefan died in Toronto of heart failure Jan 24, 2008. A proud Ukrainian throughout his life, Stefan had been heartened in recent years to see Ukraine developing as a free democratic country. As a young man he was forced into slave labour at Nazi concentration camps for his Ukrainian underground activities. Over the postwar years he worked ceaselessly with Ukrainian nationalist groups to help liberate Ukraine from Soviet oppression. Settling in Kingston in 1955, he earned his living as a production worker at the Dupont plant there. He found a strong place in Kingston, both with other Ukrainians and the greater community. Many there were familiar with his role in the annual Ukrainian Folklore festivities. He travelled often to Ukraine, where he was honoured for his underground work. During Ukraine's 10th Anniversary of Independance celebrations, he was one of a handful of non-parliamentarians invited to sit on the floor of the Parliament chamber. In his declining years, he participated in family life when he could, his children having moved inconveniently away. Until her death two years ago, Yolanta GALICINSKI was a constant companion for many years. The Luciuk family were great Friends throughout his time in Kingston. But always, for him, there were Friends everywhere. He is survived by his sister Katerina, his children, Marika, Yuri, Natalia and Peter, and his daughter-in-law Kelly. His son Wasyl predeceased him, as did his separated wife Anna. His grandchildren are Russell and Holly. Stefan was buried in Kingston on Monday, Jan 28th in Saint Mary's Cemetery.

MERIFIELD, Helen Margaret (née KYDD) (1917-2008)
It is with sadness that we announce Helen passed away peacefully on February 11th. Beloved wife of 61 years to the late Russell Roy MERIFIELD. Cherished mother of Russell, Elizabeth (Dario GALINDO) and Thomas (Linda.) Proud grandmother of Marion and step-grand_son, Simon. Loving sister of Elizabeth SHARPE and the late Sam KYDD, and sister-in-law to Doctor Jeanne BECK. Helen was born on July 26, 1917 in Campbellford, Ontario and attended schools in Orillia, Port Colborne and Ottawa before entering McGill University, where she graduated with a B.A. and High School Teaching Diploma in 1939. At McGill, she was President of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, and was President of the McGill Glee Club. She taught at Montreal West High School during World War 2, before retiring to become a mother and full time homemaker. In Montreal, her altruistic activities included Town of Mount Royal Presbyterian Church, University Settlement, Montreal Rehabilitation Institute and Royal Victoria Hospital. Moving with her husband to Toronto in 1967, she became an active member of Glenview Presbyterian Church, Goodwill Industries and the North York University Women's Club. Her gracious, friendly manner endeared her to all who met her, and she fitted easily into associations with persons in all walks of life. An eternal optimist, she saw the best in every situation and was seldom disappointed. Friends may call at the Trull 'North Toronto' Funeral Home, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence) on Thursday, February 14th from 2: 00 p.m. to 4: 00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Glenview Presbyterian Church, 1 Glenview Avenue (3 blocks south of Lawrence, west of Yonge) on Friday, February 15th at 11: 00 a.m. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband near their summer home in Magog, Quebec. Loving husband to the late Eleanor Catherine (née MEECH.) Much loved 'Dad' to his sons Harold (Nancy) and Cameron (Gail), 'Poppa' to his grand_son Brendan and 'Grampa Cam' to Gail's children Kristin, Stephanie (Domenic), Eric, Brian and David. Cam is lovingly remembered by brother Murray, sister-in-law Ruth GALL and his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brothers George and Jack, sister Peg, and brothers and sisters-in-law Grace GALL, Athol MEECH, Marion MEECH, Len and Nina MEECH and Harold and Dorothy MEECH. Cam was a very kind and contented man who loved to spend time with his family at the 'Limberlost Cabin' in Muskoka and at 'Meech Haven' on Lake Scugog in the Kawarthas. Born and raised in Toronto, he attended Brown Public School and Upper Canada College. Along with his father and brother George, he owned and operated The Gall Lumber Company in Weston, Ontario. In keeping with his wishes, a family memorial gathering in celebration of Cam's life will be held. The family wishes to thank the very compassionate and caring staff of Sunrise of Unionville, Cam's 'Home' for the past four and one half years. Passed away at Grey Gables, Markdale on Saturday February 23, 2008, Frances Theresa HALEY of Markdale in her 71st year. Daughter of the late Wilbert and Elizabeth HALEY (McGRATH.) Loving sister of Bernard HALEY (Pat) of North York, Elizabeth CHITTENDEN (Chuck) of Richmond Hill and Bernice CHITTENDEN (late Bruce) of Markdale. Sadly missed and loved by her nieces, nephews, extended family and Friends. The family received Friends at the May Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon and evening, where Vigil Prayers were held at 9 o'clock in the evening. Father Leszek SZCZYGIEL officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial held at Saint_Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Markdale on Wednesday February 27 at 11: 30 a.m. Altar servers were Bradley BLACK, Daniel, Sebastian and Simon GALLAGHER. Music for the mass was provided by the Black family and included the hymns "Prayer of St. Frances", "Queen of The Heavens", "Come Follow Me" and "Lord of The Dance". Annette, Kristen and Danielle CHITTENDEN provided readings. Timothy INSLEY, Paul MacMILLAN, Patrick, Michael, Brian and Chad CHITTENDEN served as pall bearers Daniel and Francine CHITTENDEN served as honorary pall bearers. Following the mass, Friends and relatives joined the family at Annesley Fellowship Hall for a time of sharing memories, along with musical accompaniment on the violin and piano by the Black family. A delicious luncheon was served by the Catholic Women's League. Spring interment in Saint_John's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Glenelg Centre. Memorial donations were directed to Grey Gables Resident's Council and the Arthritis Society.

At the age of 88 years, John Robertson CHESHIRE passed away on June 19, 2008 at the Humber River Hospital, Toronto. Born in Walkerton, Ontario, John was raised nearby in his beloved Wiarton, where his family owned a successful retail business. He graduated with an Honours degree in Business from the University of Western, London, Ontario and thereafter enlisted in the Army Medical Corps achieving the rank of Captain. However, John's passion for business prompted a career move to the corporate world. Initially, he worked for Kelvinator and then enjoyed a long and highly successful career in the Glass Industry. His acumen in sales and management led to senior executive roles at Hobbs Glass in the Maritimes. Subsequently he managed a mirror plant, a distribution centre and an architectural metals fabrication factory in London, Ontario for PPG Canada Inc then became the General Manager of their Glass Division and Vice President of Sales in Toronto. John was a stalwart and enthusiastic contributor to his local community, particularly Humber Valley United Church and Humber Valley Kiwanis Club. His volunteer work extended internationally to business mentoring projects in South America. John was pre-deceased by Shirley his beloved wife of more than 60 years, and is survived by a son Robert (Rosamund,) a daughter Pamela (Jim GALLAGHER) and four grandchildren: Kate, Kevin, David and Shannon. A Memorial Service will take place on Thursday June 26, 2008 at 11.00 a.m. at Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd., visitors may greet the family at 10 a.m. in the Hearth Room at the Church. The Service will be followed by a reception at the Lambton Golf Club. In lieu of flowers donations may be offered to The Alzheimer's Society.

At University Hospital on Monday, June 30, 2008, Marian "Mike" KOCH in his 85th year passed away peacefully. Beloved husband of 48 years to Sarah "Sadie". Survived by his brother Stefan KOCH and sister Krystyna DOJLIDO of Poland. Dear father of Ann and Ralph WARDROP, Barbara KOCH, Adriene BATE, Ted KOCH, Pat and Jeff GALLAGHER, Michelle and Jim MARTIN. Predeceased by sons Leslie KOCH and Douglas REID. Lovingly remembered by 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. On the afternoon of Thursday, January 17th, 2008 at Sunnybrook Hospital. Caring and loving wife of the late Ted (Edward G. JONES - 2005.) Daughter of the late Percy and Jean GALLAGHER and Marion Woodward GALLAGHER. Sister of George and his wife Nola GALLAGHER of Burlington, Fred GALLAGHER of Barrie, Pat and her husband Einar FISKAVATN of Kitchener, Barb and her husband Jim CRAGG of Ottawa and sister-in-law Agnes GALLAGHER of Winnipeg. Predeceased by her brother David and nephew Glenn GALLAGHER. Janet will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Peacefully, on Friday, February 1, 2008, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Vancouver General Hospital. Beloved wife of Will, mother of Sean and Tara, mother-in-law to Christine and grandmother of her sweetheart Madison. Diana was a sunny, cheerful woman who tackled life's round with kindness, enthusiasm and good humour. Among her extended family, Auntie Di was legendary for her generosity and oceans of affection. Born on April 23, 1943 in Trail, British Columbia, daughter of the late Bob and Babs GRAHAM, Diana lived and worked in Vancouver, then Toronto, where she met and married William WEBSTER of Sherbrooke, Québec. The family later moved to Vancouver. She leaves her husband, children, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, also sister Lori WERRY of Dunrobin, Ontario, with husband David and son Matthew, sister Debbie GRAHAM of Abbotsford, British Columbia, brother-in-law Norman WEBSTER of Montreal with wife Pat and children David, Andrew, Derek, Gillian and Hilary, and sister-in-law Maggie GALLAGHER of Oakville, Ontario, with husband Tom and children Karen, Matthew, Kerry and Casey. Diana requested no funeral be held, but a celebration of her life is being planned for family and Friends. Peacefully, as the sun rose in Brantford, Ontario, on June 20, 2008, Phyllis RAYNER, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and proud nurse, died in her 86th year. Predeceased six months ago by her beloved soulmate and husband of 56 years, George. Wonderful and fun-loving mother of Shelagh (Bruce PETERSON,) Mississauga; Moira (Les WHITE/WHYTE), Ottawa; Barbara (friend of Paul FLANAGAN), Strathroy; and George (Lori LUFF), Mississauga. Adored Grandma of Susan, Kathryn (fiancée of David LUND,) and Brian PETERSON; Emily (fiancée of Stefan GINGRAS,) Elizabeth (Alex SARABURA,) Fraser, Anna, and Mary WHITE/WHYTE; and Abigail, Joshua, Zachary, and Jessica RAYNER. GALLAGHER and Marie Cecilia DRISCOLL, Phyllis graduated from Saint Mary's Academy, St. Boniface Hospital (R.N., 1944) and the University of Toronto (PhN, 1950). For many years she was a Public Health Nurse in Brantford, retiring in 1988 as Acting Director. A tireless volunteer, organizer, and crusader for social justice, Phyllis was the first female chair of the Saint_Joseph's Hospital board, a past chair of the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital Community Advisory Board, a past chair of the Canadian Mental Health Association Task Force on Housing for the Psychiatrically Disabled, a past chair of the Mohawk College Studies in Aging Advisory Committee, a founding member of the Nova Vita women's shelter, and a past board member of the Brant County Children's Aid Society, the Brant District Health Council, the Children and Youth Services Council, and the Brant and Branford Housing Authority. She also worked on the Ontario Provincial Psychiatric Hospitals Strategic Planning Committee and at the Ontario Board of Parole. A lifelong Liberal, Phyllis served as president of the Brantford Liberal Party. She was also a Companion of the Sisters of Saint_Joseph. She was awarded the Canada 125 medal in 1992, the J.A.D. Marquis Award for her contribution to health care in Brant in 1995, and last month she was delighted to be presented with the Mission Legacy Award by the Saint_Joseph's Healthcare System. Phyllis will long be remembered for her incredible joie de vivre, wicked sense of humour, common sense, and quest for adventure. She loved her family fiercely, cultivated life-long Friendships, and together with George, welcomed all to their home with open arms. She will be greatly missed.
