At Seniors' Health Centre on Saturday, January 12, 2008 two months before her 91st birthday. A service of remembrance was held at the Morley Bedford Chapel on January 14; in keeping with her wishes, it was private. Betty will be greatly missed by her devoted children, Richard and Karen BETTERIDGE, and Judy and Bill HAUST her grandchildren, Jamey and Josie BETTERIDGE, Kim BETTERIDGE, Stephen and Sheri BETTERIDGE, Andrew HAUST and Lee HAUST; her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Max, Mackenzie, and Owen BETTERIDGE and by her brother-in-law and dear friend, Vernon B. SCHNEIDER. She will be equally missed by her extended family, Heinz, Daria, Jan, Millie (Dodic), Marco and Jules HAUST. Our wise and fearless mother loved life, devoting hers to the nurturing of others, whether family, Friends, beneficiaries of her various volunteer commitments, or the many fortunate birds and animals that happened to cross her path. Dr. Felix DEGAN passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 29, 2008 in Guelph, Ontario. He leaves his wife of 44 years, Barbara (McINTEE,) his daughter Diana ROBINSON (Greg,) son Peter (Robin HILLIS,) daughter Monica FERRACCIOLI (Aaron,) grandchildren Lauren, Alexa, Kaitlyn and Courtney, and his sister Maria MOSETTI (Oscar) of Trieste, Italy. Predeceased by his parents Giuseppe and Pierina DEGAN of Trieste, Italy, and brothers Edoardo, Diodata and Livio. Felix was born in Castelnuovo, Italy on July 13, 1938. He was a proud Canadian, arriving in Saint_John, New Brunswick in 1959 with no knowledge of the English language and a degree from the Polytechnical Institute of Trieste. His first job in Canada was as a service station attendant, taken so that he could learn English and the ways of his adopted country. Felix made it his goal to never stop learning. He was a design technologist, design engineer, project engineer, and chief engineer, finishing his career as President of his own company, Industrial Components and Equipment Co., specializing in water and air pollution. He completed studies in mechanical engineering through the Kentucky University, completed a diploma in Business Administration Management Studies at Conestoga College, received his Master Degree in Environmental Science from the University of Pennsylvania, and received his Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Management from State University of New York. A member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists since 1984, Felix was also a member of the New York Society of Professional Engineers, The American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians, The Institute of Chartered Engineers of Canada (Fellow Member), and The Institute of Incorporated Engineers in the United Kingdom (Fellow Member). He was also the recipient of numerous awards and citations. In 2005, Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists created the Doctor Felix and Barbara Degan Award, honouring his years of involvement and Barbara's years of support, by giving an outstanding international technology student from an Ontario college a yearly bursary award. Felix was a dedicated family man, always there to offer his guidance, love and support. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world. Visitation will be held at the Gilbert MacIntyre and son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph, on Thursday, July 3, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Vigil for Felix will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 3 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint_Joseph's Church, 409 Paisley Rd., Guelph on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 10: 30 a.m. Private family entombment will follow. It is with great sadness, following a brief battle with cancer, that we announce the sudden passing of Vince MARCOCCIA on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the age of 52. He was surrounded by his beloved girls, Deena, Daniella and Jo-Ann, and his brother Luciano (Lorna FERRARI.) As only would have been expected of Vince, he fought to his last breath. Survived by his brother Bruno (Catia), grandmother Pasqualina, nieces Erika, Marianna and Elicia, and nephew Valerio. Predeceased by his parents Ricardo and Maria. He will be sadly missed by his in-law family, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Vince's zest for life, passion for his family and Friends, and his love of sports were evident to the very end. George MOTTRAM guided by his strong Catholic faith

If there was one thing that guided George Edward MOTTRAM's life, it would be his Catholic faith.
Whether he was administering eucharist at his long-time church or negotiating costs with bus companies for the Catholic school board, MOTTRAM always treated others with the respect he'd like to be given.
"That was the key to George -- his Catholic faith," said Ken REGAN, former education director of the London Middlesex Catholic school board.
MOTTRAM died January 25 at age 83.
He was one of the first people who welcomed Regan into the school board in 1967 when he took over after Monsignor J.A. FEENEY retired. That moment sparked a Friendship that would last more than 30 years.
MOTTRAM was one of four people in the administration office at the time. He began working there a decade earlier, straight out of high school, when FEENEY asked him to join the board.
As the planning and transportation officer for the board, it was MOTTRAM's responsibility to seek sites where new Catholic schools could be built, plan bus routes for students and negotiate costs with school bus companies.
His responsibilities were heavy at the time, considering Catholic boards had fewer dollars from the province to work with and nearly half the board's students depended on busing. Gentle but effective, MOTTRAM always impressed his colleagues with his ability to negotiate low prices.
"The other boards were jealous at what he could do," REGAN said.
They were daunting tasks, but MOTTRAM made them look easy.
"I never saw the man angry. I'm sure he was at times, but he never showed it," said REGAN. "He was always calm and respectful."
MOTTRAM was also a board member at the Monsignor Feeney Foundation, a secretary of the ecumenical commission of the diocese of London and a past-president of the Irish Benevolent Society.
"He never knew how to say no," said John FERRIS, the board chair, who knew MOTTRAM for more than 50 years.
An active member of Saint Mary's Roman Catholic church and later Holy Family, every year MOTTRAM would comment on live radio during the broadcast of midnight mass at Saint Peter's Basilica.
In 1992, MOTTRAM was named to the mayor's Honour List. Eight years later, he organized a faith-based celebration that drew thousands to London from various religions.
MOTTRAM was notorious for forever running late -- because he would always stop to chat with people, FERRIS said. "He was the closest thing to a perfect gentleman I have ever met in my life."
MOTTRAM is survived by his wife Rita, four children and a grandchild.

Teacher devoted to children
Kay McLAUGHLIN saw her career as an 'investment' in children.

Wilma DE ROND credits her Grade 8 teacher Kay McLAUGHLIN with helping her through a difficult time.
"She was the first female teacher I had since my mother passed away," said DE ROND, education director of the London District Catholic school board. "I had already gone through a lot of change.
"She was just a steady hand and that's what I needed," DE ROND said.
McLAUGHLIN, whose career in education inspired others to follow, died February 24 She was 92.
Her daughter, Kathy FRAUMENI, is a school principal. Granddaughter Kate VAUTHIER teaches and Mary Kate FRAUMENI, another granddaughter, aspires to teach.
An elementary teacher in the Catholic system, then a three-time trustee on the board that preceded the London District Catholic school board, McLAUGHLIN's life revolved around children, those who knew her said.
She trained to become a teacher in Saint John, N.B., where she was born in 1916.
She met her future husband, Maurice, at a skating rink one frosty day while a student and the couple later kept in touch.
They married in 1940 and and raised five daughters and a son. The young family moved frequently with each job transfer Maurice had while dealing trucks and farm equipment.
"We were a close family because we moved together," recalled her daughter Patricia McLAUGHLIN of London.
They settled in London in 1967 where Kay McLAUGHLIN taught at Notre Dame, St. Paul and Saint Anne schools.
When she retired at 65, McLAUGHLIN decided to run for the school board. She ran three times, all successfully.
In 1982, in her third run, she told The Free Press her plan was to "protect my investment in the children."
Her experience as a teacher and a mother paid dividends later, recalled former board education director Ken REGAN.
"She brought all of those perspectives to the board. They were terrific bits of information," he said.
Seldom seen without a hat, McLAUGHLIN's wit was sharp, her manners impeccable and her arguments almost always pointed, said Regan.
"She certainly added some decorum to our deliberations," said trustee John FERRIS, now the board's chairperson.
McLAUGHLIN encouraged parents and teachers to take part in public meetings and have their voices heard in a boardroom where they often felt intimidated.
McLAUGHLIN's presence was also felt at her parish, now Holy Cross, where she was president of the Catholic Woman's League and a key fundraiser. Among her projects was an annual bake sale, begun 30 years ago, to repair public works in South America.
The fundraiser continues to this day and has raised "tens of thousands" of dollars, Patricia McLAUGHLIN said.
