Teen killed when snowmobile hits auger
Ryan MORRISON of Millbank was riding on a friend's farm and went off a trail.
By Joe BELANGER and Jenni DUNNING, Sun Media, Fri., January 4, An 18-year-old Perth County snowmobiler is dead after he ran into a piece of farm equipment, in the region's third serious snowmobile crash and second fatality in two weeks.
Perth County Ontario Provincial Police warn parents and young people to take more care snowmobiling.
Ryan MORRISON of Millbank was riding at a friend's farm on Line 67 of Mornington Ward Wednesday about 8: 35 p.m. when he went off a trail and struck a grain auger.
He was taken by ambulance to Stratford General Hospital where he died of head injuries.
"Definitely, in two or three incidents, speed has been a factor, as it is in most snowmobile crashes," Ontario Provincial Police Const. Glen Childerley said yesterday.
"People have to learn that you don't have to go full bore to enjoy a snowmobile. You can lose control very quickly.
"You can't stay on the trails. The speed of snowmobiles is outrageous and, combined with their light weight, it doesn't make for easily travelling at high speeds," he said.
Childerley said age and inexperience are also factors that lead to trouble for snowmobilers, pointing to the death of a 15-year-old boy December 19.
In that crash, Mitchell District high school student Perry OSBORN of Monkton was heading home from school when his snowmobile went off a trail, crossed Perth Line 36 and travelled into the path of a transport truck.
On December 8, a 19-year-old snowmobiler crashed into a tree near Listowel and was dropped off at a motel by another snowmobiler, who asked the operator to call 911.
The victim was taken to London Health Sciences Centre in critical condition with several fractures and released about a week ago.
On December 17, a 17-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were thrown from a snowmobile when they struck a car while going the wrong way on a road in Malahide Township.
In rural areas, snowmobiles are a common fixture on many farms and it's not unusual for young people to take their machines to school.
To drive a snowmobile, the driver must be at least 12, have a snowmobile licence and take a safe snowmobiling course, Childerley said.
"It's part of their life on a farm," he said. "But there are groomed trails in the area that are patrolled by snowmobile clubs and police and you don't often encounter problems on those trails."

For EPPEL and wife, Saturday nights were for polka
By Jenni DUNNING, Special To Sun Media, Sun., January 20, 2008
Friends of John EPPEL remember his dedication to the community and his devotion to his garden.
And his wife Dorothy EPPEL smiles as she remembers her husband, who loved nature and dancing the polka on Saturday nights.
"In our last few years we loved to go dancing. Polka, of course, the fox trot, waltzes," she said. "Those are good memories."
John EPPEL Jr., of Tillsonburg, died of heart complications last June 10. He was 80.
An immigrant of German descent from Hungary, EPPEL lived in Tillsonburg for 73 years.
He worked as a teacher before getting "an offer he couldn't refuse" from his father to work on the family tobacco farm, Dorothy said.
That's where he got his great work ethic, she said.
EPPEL was also a director of the Delhi District German Home, a director of the Crop Insurance Commission of Ontario, a trustee with the Norfolk County school board, and a board member of the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital.
He and Dorothy, 12 years apart in age, married when EPPEL Jr. was 62. They were both widowed by their first partners.
He's survived by Dorothy, six children and 11 grandchildren.
His funeral at First Baptist Church in Tillsonburg, which holds 250 people, was packed, said Ike AMORIN, the church's senior pastor.
"His rapport with people was quite excellent," he said.
Pine and spruce seedlings were given out at the funeral -- fitting to his memory, said Dorothy.
EPPEL planted saplings every spring, about 10,000 in his lifetime, she said.
His last project was trying to develop a Carolinian tree species that's depleted in Tillsonburg.
"He was very conscious of the environment," said Dorothy.
EPPEL also had a garden "big enough to feed two families," she said. And he grew "thousands" of gladiola bulbs every year, said his friend, Rev. Andrew BRNDJAR.
He loved to be outside, even when he grew weak.
But his inner compass was a little off, said BRNDJAR. EPPEL always got lost and finished last in his church's annual car rally, where participants drive around Otterville on a scavenger hunt.
"We'd say, 'Hey John, did you take the scenic route?' " said BRNDJAR.
EPPEL had many collections, including hats and porcelain figures. He never threw anything away, including a "few hundred" baseball hats kept in his basement, said BRNDJAR.
"What's Dorothy going to do with all these hats when God calls you home?" he'd asked EPPEL.
He said he misses his friend, who was like a brother.
"We kind of fit together like a hand in a glove," he said.

'She was just a bright star full of life'
By Jenni DUNNING, Wed., June 25, 2008
Shelby GOLDIE couldn't stay there for long.
She surveyed the accident scene -- broken CDs and strewn belongings that had flown out of the car her friend Christie ROSE drove before it went out of control, flipped and smashed into a tree. She died later of her injuries.
GOLDIE was one of 10 people to congregate at the site on Fingal Line between Centre and Oneida roads Monday night, looking for answers to Saturday's crash.
"No one really knows what happened. We tried to observe and put the pieces of the puzzle together," she said. "We got an eerie feeling and had to leave."
ROSE, 18, of Fingal, was a popular student at Parkside Collegiate Institute in Saint Thomas and a forward for the London Devilettes intermediate AA hockey team.
She'll be remembered as a strong-willed, funny person, Friends said.
"Through it all, everyone was like, 'She's a fighter. She's so strong,'" said friend and teammate Brittany PATON, 21.
PATON said she would need a dictionary to describe how wonderful her friend was. "She was the kind of person you met and wanted to be Friends with right away. She made you feel good about yourself."
PATON said ROSE loved working out and doing impressions of actors in her favourite movies, such as She's the Manitoba
In their last conversation, she said, ROSE talked about how happy she was and about plans for after graduation.
She said she's in shock her friend is gone. "You don't want to believe it. It's kind of an emotional roller coaster."
ROSE's school and community are reeling from the crash. About 200 people visited Parkside for a memorial yesterday to share memories and photographs.
"She was just a bright star full of life and will be missed by anyone who was blessed to have known her," said principal Paul McKENZIE.
"I'm sure it's every parent's worst nightmare. It's every principal's, as well."
ROSE is survived by her parents, Melanie Ann (SNOWSELL) and Dan, brother Joseph and sister Lauren.
Visitation is at Parkside on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral is at the school Saturday at 11: 30 a.m.

BARR never wavered from his desire to become doctor
By Jenni DUNNING, Sun., July 20, 2008
Dr. David BARR didn't have it easy.
A hemophiliac with a progressive form of muscular dystrophy, he had to work twice as hard to become a doctor -- a longtime goal.
BARR died July 3 from heart failure related to muscular dystrophy, a genetic condition that slowly weakens muscles.
He was 52.
He's survived by his wife, Sarah, daughter Victoria and mother Evelyn.
"He was the epitome of stick-to-it-ness and drive and where it can get you," said friend Ben MILLER.
BARR was born in Trail, British Columbia, and moved around Canada with his Salvation Army minister parents, eventually settling in London.
He applied to medical school each year he attended university, but he figured he was turned down because of his illnesses.
"He wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer. He was ready to step out and do something," MILLER said.
BARR received five degrees and diplomas in the 1970s and '80s, before being accepted into the McMaster University medical school.
These include a bachelor of science from the University of Western Ontario, an honours degree in physiology and pharmacology, and a master's in business administration from McMaster.
In his time off, BARR worked with missionaries in Africa, and raised thousands of dollars to send packages of medical supplies there.
He later opened a family practice in Walkerton, shortly before the E. coli tragedy of 2000.
MILLER said he often uses stories of BARR's determination to inspire his own children.
"He just wanted to be a doctor. That focus amazed me," said MILLER, who knew BARR in his teenage years and early 20s.
"You'd call his house and he'd answer, 'Dr.  BARR.'
He wanted to be a doctor ever since age four, said his mother, Evelyn BARR.
"It was just one thing he wanted to be, and that's all. He never, ever changed his mind."
BARR was devastated when he had to give up his medical practice a few years ago as his muscles deteriorated, she said.
In his last couple of years, BARR was bedridden and couldn't move his hands, arms or legs.
"He says, 'You know, I can't do anything, nothing.' And here he was only 52, in the prime of life," said Evelyn. "He never complained. That's the only time he ever said that anything was hard."
BARR's father and brother also died from muscular dystrophy, and his sister has the condition.
BARR didn't talk much about his illnesses with Friends, said Monty MITCHELL, who knew him for about 40 years.
MITCHELL said BARR was so focused on his goals that not many people knew his adventurous side.
"David was always full of life. (He) was a lively young man," he said, adding BARR had a great love of the outdoors.
The pair went camping in Ipperwash and rode motorcycles. BARR also took adventure trips, such as whitewater rafting.
He also loved books, MITCHELL said, noting his favourite collection of non-fiction books with gold-lined pages.
"He was voracious for knowledge. You could take any topic and David would be just like a library of information."
BARR even studied his own X-rays when he started getting sicker.
"He really was a very rare kind of guy. I was privileged having him as a friend," MITCHELL said.

SINCLAIR, Robert Grey
Robert (Bob) passed gently at the age of 94 on April 9, 2008, surrounded by family. He will be profoundly missed by his wife of seventy years, Irene (née THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON,) their daughters Diane GILDAY (David) and Marilynne SINCLAIR (Brent HOLDEN,) son Gregory SINCLAIR (Kateri LANTHIER) and six grandchildren, Sean (Jane CASKEY), Neil (Kristi SYRON), and Keith GILDAY (Regan BIGGS), and Nicholas, Julia and newborn William SINCLAIR. Robert was the proud great-grandfather of James, Ellen and Walker GILDAY. He was predeceased by his sister Renee DUNTHORNE.
Born in Toronto on July 22, 1913, Robert married Irene in 1937. In 1943, the couple moved to Montreal, where they raised their family, returning to Toronto in 1987. Robert delighted us all with his passion for jazz and swing music - he was a clarinet and saxophone player, and performed in Toronto swing bands by night in the 1930s, while completing Chartered Accountant accreditation by day. He enjoyed a successful career as chief financial officer for a major, Quebec-based construction company. In later years, he and Irene took great pleasure in their cottage on Lake Champlain in upstate New York, hosting innumerable joyful family gatherings. His sense of humour, unshakeable optimism at lowering his golf score 'next time,' and his talent for improvising vivid bedtime stories are indelible memories. We will always cherish the legacy of Robert's gracious, gentle and deeply considerate nature.
The family wishes to acknowledge the thoughtful care and diligence of the staff of the Wellesley Central Place, Robert's home for the last two years of his life. If desired, donations may be made to Wellesley Central Place, 160 Wellesley Street East, Toronto, M4A 1J3.
A family service will be held on Saturday, April 12. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
