Lena McCONNELL, daughter of the late Samuel James and Margaret Jane (née CURRY) McCONNELL of Euphrasia Township, passed away peacefully at her home in Meaford on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the age of 84. She was the much loved sister of Mabel WONCH of Meaford, Ruth (Jim) GRAY/GREY of Ridgetown, Marjorie (Ron) CULBERT, and Elizabeth (Dan) FALVEY of Meaford. She was predeceased by brothers Jim and Phene McCONNELL of Meaford, and by sisters Edna SMITH and Florence SHERWOOD of Meaford, and Jean EISENHOFER of Kitchener and will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews and their families. Lena's family will receive Friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 48 Boucher St. E., in Meaford, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services officiated by Reverend Gary PARKER will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday May 22 at 1: 30 p.m. with interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Mrs. Ann Love Curry (née SUTHERLAND,) age 99, of Stratford passed away at the Stratford General Hospital on Wednesday October 24, 2007. Born in Elgin, Manitoba on June 6, 1908. Predeceased by her husband J. Grant CURRY (1995.) Ann is survived by her nephews and nieces Hugh and Mary SUTHERLAND, Sarnia, Ian and Joan SUTHERLAND, Winnipeg, Neal and Therese SUTHERLAND, Red Lake, Ontario, Syd and Lorna SUTHERLAND, Thunder Bay and Betsy STEWARD/STEWART/STUART and Donald TROTTER, Nova Scotia. Ann was a long time resident of London, Ontario where she was an active member of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire and the Ladies Auxiliary of Victoria Hospital. Her love of life shown through her energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family is very grateful for the care given by the staff at Anne Hathaway Residence over the past nine years. Passed peacefully at the Houses of Providence in Toronto on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at the age of 83, completing a life filled with love. Father CORLESS was the beloved son of the late William CORLESS and Sarah COAKLEY of St. Catharines. He is survived by his cousins Mary CURRY, Agnes HARDMAN, Gertrude CORLESS, Father Ernest CANNING, Elizabeth and Ross DANSON and Francis and Joyce SEPHTON in England. He lived his life with enormous and infectious enthusiasm and he was greatly loved, and will be deeply missed, by his many adopted families, earned during a lifetime of devotion to others and to God. Father CORLESS was an active priest in the Archdiocese of Toronto for 49 years. He was ordained on June 3, 1950 and served as Associate Pastor at Saint_James Parish, Toronto, Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish, Toronto, St. Leo's Parish, Etobicoke and Saint Mary's Parish, Toronto and as Pastor of Saint Mary's Parish, Victoria Harbour, Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Etobicoke, Saint Paul's Basilica, Toronto and Saint Maria Goretti Parish, Scarborough. He served as Spiritual Director at Serra House from 1995 until 1999, when he retired. Father was a friend of L'Arche from its beginning in North America and was also deeply involved in Faith and Light, Young Christian Workers and the Catholic Children's Aid Society. His compassion and kindness knew no depths and are the greatest gifts he leaves to all those who knew him, and many who didn't. Many thanks to the staff at the Houses of Providence, the Archdiocese of Toronto and especially to Donna Peniston for the loving care provided to him. Resting at R.S. Kane Funeral Home, 6150 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario, on Tuesday, February 5 from 2: 00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and at L'Arche Daybreak, 11339 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario from 7: 00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6. COTTON, Mary A. (née SMITH)
Of Owen Sound and Tobermory passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, June 26, 2008 in her 87th year. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Harold and will be deeply missed by her children Penny CURTIS (the late Bill CURTIS) of Brampton, Linda RIEGER (Ray) of Port Stanley, Robert COTTON of Owen Sound/Tobermory and Valerie COTTON of Bolton as well as by her grandchildren Tracy JONES (Jeff,) Terri BENWELL (Rick,) Karen WOLFENDEN (Geoff,) James CURTIS (Lara), Anne CURTIS and Daniel COTTON- KOVEN. In her later years, Mary was especially delighted by visits from her great-grandchildren Jessie, Kayla, Michael, Tyson, Caleb, Madison and Chloe. Mary was the daughter of the late Rev. Robert SMITH and Dora (nee FIELDS) and was predeceased by her sisters Dora and Jenny and her brothers Herbert and Arthur. Growing up she lived in many small towns in the Eastern townships and Quebec and then attended McGill University and MacDonald Normal School in Montreal. After teaching for one year, she enrolled in the Canadian Women's Army Corps and while serving in London, England met and married Harold. Mary was a spirited, independent and intelligent woman. While raising her family, she returned to teaching and continued her education, graduating from Queen's University (1971) and qualifying as a primary educational specialist and teaching librarian. She was instrumental in designing and establishing elementary school libraries in Owen Sound. The young children loved story time with Mrs. COTTON and she had many devoted library helpers over the years. Mary had many varied interests (reading, music (piano), travel, knitting, bridge, rocks) and like her husband Harold, continued to learn and take on new challenges. Mary and Harold were tremendous role models for their children, students and Friends. Sincere appreciation is expressed to the staff of the Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital for the loving care provided to Mary. Visitation will be held at the George Funeral Home, 430 Mary Street, Wiarton on Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 7: 00 to 9: 00 p.m. and on Monday, June 30th from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 2: 00 p.m. Interment Bayview Cemetery. Passed away peacefully on July 5, 2008 at home in Fonthill, Ontario. Cherished husband of Audrey (née HARRISON,) and loving father of Stephen (Susan) of Waterloo, Philip (Sue LEARN) of Fonthill, Aaron (Carolyn) of Fall River, Nova Scotia, and Anna CROCE (Tony) of Welland. Dear grandpa ('Pukky') and special friend to Austin and Elliott, Melyssa and Macklem, Benjamin and Nicholas, Nathaniel and Alyssa. Dear brother-in-law of Richard and Audrey HARRISON of Sault Ste. Marie, Joanne SMITH of London and Paul SMITH of Sarnia. Born in 1932 in Saint Thomas, Ontario, Jim was a graduate (1952) of the University of Western Ontario (Philosophy) and an Associate (1950) of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. From 1955 to 1974 he taught History and Music at his beloved Pelham District High School in Fenwick Ontario, and until his retirement in 1988 was a member of the History Department at E.L. Crossley Secondary School near Fonthill. Jim loved to read and write, and authored a manuscript, 'Our Living Past', an extensive survey of world history centering on mankind's intellectual and artistic achievements, that was used by thousands of his students. Music was ever present in Jim's life and he was active in many musical events as a solo performer (piano and harpsichord) and choir member, and felt privileged to have been a student of harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. He was a strong supporter of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, having served on the Board from 1979 to 1992, and was recognized with a Life-Time Achievement award in 2002. Besides attending with Audrey hundreds of sporting and other events involving his children and grandchildren for close to fifty years, Jim was an avid collector of rare books and manuscripts, with particular emphasis on philosophical and theological works of the Renaissance. Visitation will be at the James L. Pedlar Funeral Home, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill, Ontario on Tuesday, July 8th and Wednesday July 9th 2008, from 2: 00 pm-4:00 p.m. and 7:00 pm-9:00 p.m. To honour Jim, a celebration of Jim's life will be held in the chapel of James L.
