Of Wiarton, suddenly at home on Wednesday, May 28th, 2008. Vera May (née TYMCHUK) in her 72nd year. Devoted wife of the late John “Sparky” BYERS (May 17th, 2008) for 45 years. Cherished mother of John and his wife Sandra, of Dundalk; Chris and his wife Tammy,▲ of Wiarton; and Jean BYERS- SCAROLA and her husband Loreto SCAROLA, of Woodbridge. Caring grandmother of Jamie BYERS, Justine and her husband Joel CROCCO, Chris BYERS, Robert BYERS, Nikki BYERS, Lindsay KERR, Tiffany KERR, Spencer BYERS, Anthony SCAROLA, and Sofia SCAROLA; and great-grandmother of Isabella CROCCO. Passed away peacefully on July 5, 2008 at home in Fonthill, Ontario. Cherished husband of Audrey (née HARRISON,) and loving father of Stephen (Susan) of Waterloo, Philip (Sue LEARN) of Fonthill, Aaron (Carolyn) of Fall River, Nova Scotia, and Anna CROCE (Tony) of Welland. Dear grandpa ('Pukky') and special friend to Austin and Elliott, Melyssa and Macklem, Benjamin and Nicholas, Nathaniel and Alyssa. Dear brother-in-law of Richard and Audrey HARRISON of Sault Ste. Marie, Joanne SMITH of London and Paul SMITH of Sarnia. Born in 1932 in Saint Thomas, Ontario, Jim was a graduate (1952) of the University of Western Ontario (Philosophy) and an Associate (1950) of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. From 1955 to 1974 he taught History and Music at his beloved Pelham District High School in Fenwick Ontario, and until his retirement in 1988 was a member of the History Department at E.L. Crossley Secondary School near Fonthill. Jim loved to read and write, and authored a manuscript, 'Our Living Past', an extensive survey of world history centering on mankind's intellectual and artistic achievements, that was used by thousands of his students. Music was ever present in Jim's life and he was active in many musical events as a solo performer (piano and harpsichord) and choir member, and felt privileged to have been a student of harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. He was a strong supporter of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, having served on the Board from 1979 to 1992, and was recognized with a Life-Time Achievement award in 2002. Besides attending with Audrey hundreds of sporting and other events involving his children and grandchildren for close to fifty years, Jim was an avid collector of rare books and manuscripts, with particular emphasis on philosophical and theological works of the Renaissance. Visitation will be at the James L. Pedlar Funeral Home, 1292 Pelham Street, Fonthill, Ontario on Tuesday, July 8th and Wednesday July 9th 2008, from 2: 00 pm-4:00 p.m. and 7:00 pm-9:00 p.m. To honour Jim, a celebration of Jim's life will be held in the chapel of James L. She was predeceased by her parents Percy and Ethel RADBOURNE of Shallow Lake. Mrs. FISHER was a graduate of the Stratford Normal School. She began her teaching career at Dufferin Public School in Owen Sound. Following her marriage she was a gifted teacher of gifted children at Saranac Public School in North York. Before the onset of her cruel disease she was an accomplished pianist, artist, craft person and gardener, activities that she enjoyed and shared while a resident of Huntsville, Welland, Don Mills, London and Stratford. CURRIE, Douglas Duncan
Passed away peacefully at the McCall Continuing Care Centre, Mississauga, Ontario on January 22, 2008 at the age of eighty-five. Sadly missed by June (McMULLEN,) his wife of 62 years, and his three children: Mary (Peter McBRIDE) of Montreal, Andrew (Susan CROCKER) of Hantsport, Nova Scotia, and Sandy (David MOORE) of Toronto. Doug was a devoted family man, through and through. His six grandchildren: Meghan and Robert McBRIDE, Dustin and Sarah CURRIE, and Lindsay and Stephanie MOORE were a source of great pride for Doug and they will all miss their 'Papa' terribly. Predeceased by his brother Don (Hélène) and his sister Patsy (John BASSEL,) Doug is also survived by his sister Peggy (Don KEMP) as well as many nieces and nephews. After attending University of Toronto Schools, Doug earned an engineering degree from the University of Toronto in 1945. While in university, Doug was the Engineering Class President in his junior year, a member of the Engineers' Gold Key Society, the university heavyweight boxing champion, and was involved in many other sports and activities. Doug also served in the Canadian Army from May, 1944 until September, 1945. During this period, Doug was enlisted with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and was accepted as an officer in training prior to his discharge. After the war, Doug went on to enjoy a successful business career in Montreal with stops at Alcan, Dominion Bridge and Pratt and Whitney. Following his retirement, Doug was able to devote more time to sailing his yacht 'Windlark' with family members and he rekindled his boyhood interest in building and flying remote-controlled model airplanes. The family expresses warm appreciation to the staff of the McCall Continuing Care Centre and, in particular, the fourth-floor nurses and caregivers for their goodhumoured and big-hearted care in Doug's final days. There will be a short service and a celebration of Doug's life for Friends and family members at 3: 00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. A native of North Lincolnshire, England, Roy came to Canada following his marriage to Joan in December 2002. Roy leaves dear cousins and many good Friends in the Thealby and Burton-upon-Stather area, where he owned his painting and decorating business for many years before his retirement and move to Canada. A long-time member and supporter of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Roy took a keen interest in learning about Canadian animals, birds, and plants. His new Friends in Canada will join in celebrating Roy's life at a service being held on Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Saint_John the Evangelist Church, 280 Saint_James, London, Canon Don FORD officiating. Devoted father of Derrick McCLINCHEY and his wife Miriam of London; Debbie GILES and her husband Gord ROSS of Lambeth; and Jeff McCLINCHEY and his wife Jeanette of London. Also loved by his grandchildren Caitlin, Ashley, Tanner, Tyler, Jeff, Adam, Paul, Jonathan, and soon to be great-grandfather of Braedan. Loving brother of Sarah CROCKWELL of Grand Bend; Dorothy MacDONALD and her husband Keith of Edmonton, Alberta; Grant McCLINCHEY and his partner Irene McCANN of Grand Bend; Don McCLINCHEY and his wife Gail of St. Malo, Manitoba. After growing up in Seaforth, Ontario, Bill served in the Royal Canadian Navy and fought in the Korean War. Soon after he married Barb and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force allowing them to enjoy traveling the world. After retiring from his 33 years of duty with the Canadian Armed Forces, Bill and Barb settled in London. Here Bill enjoyed working for General Motors until his retirement. Bill and Barb enjoyed spending summers in Florida and California. Bill was a proud member of the Legion, the Masons and most of all a loyal fan of the Leafs. Bill will be fondly remembered by all his neighbours and Friends. Now in passing Bill has been reunited with Barb where they can continue their adventure. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvia. Beloved mother of Mark (Gail CROLL) and Sheri (David BERNHARD.) Devoted grandmother to Ben, Zane and Carlyn. Loving sister of Betty BASSOFF (Ronny.) Predeceased by her husband Carlyle.
Sylvia was a bright and caring woman who graduated from the University of Toronto with an B.A. and an M.S.W. She worked as a social worker until her retirement.
She loved her family and Friends. She engaged in volunteer work with numerous organizations throughout her life. She had a wide variety of interests and enjoyed travelling, animals and playing bridge. Despite numerous physical difficulties in her later years, she continued to participate fully in life.
She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.

Mum died peacefully in Toronto at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, James CRONYN and her later-life companion Jack VAUGHAN. She will be missed by her three children Laleah (Michael GIBSON,) Peter (Stacey LISTER) and Elizabeth (Robert TOPPING;) her grandchildren James and Kristin MacINTOSH, Tenley and Brooke GIBSON, Blythe, James and Laleah CRONYN, Patrick, Katrina and Douglas TOPPING; her nephews Alex BOVEY and Jeff CRONYN and nieces Sheila WOOLNER, Leslie PUNTER and Martha CRONYN and former daughter-in-law Liz BARRETT. Daughter of Major General W.H.P. and Phyllis ELKINS, Val was born in Kingston and lived in Ottawa, Halifax, Vancouver and Toronto. She attended Havergal College and spent her summers in Metis Beach. In 1943, Val joined the Canadian Red Cross as an ambulance driver and served overseas in England during the war. After returning and marrying Jim, Val began her volunteer career which spanned five decades. Her volunteerism included the Junior League, the Children's Aid Society, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Canadian Friends of Museums. Val was also actively involved with the Havergal College and the Toronto Golf Club. She always gave generously of herself both to her family and volunteer activities. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at Bradgate Arms and to the caregivers in Vancouver who cared for Mum over the last few years and made her days much brighter as she coped with Parkinson's disease. Visitation will be at Humphrey Funeral Home, 1403 Bayview Ave on Thursday April 17th from 4: 00 to 8:00 p.m. A service will be held on Friday April 18th at 11: 00 a.m. at St. Clements Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Havergal College, The Parkinson's Society or the Art Gallery of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.
