LEDDY, Rita Theresa
On June 18th Rita passed from this life after a brave and graceful two and a half year struggle with cancer. She died at Saint Michael's Hospital in Toronto, the place where she had trained as a nurse, worked as a nursing supervisor and where she met her husband, Dr. John Edward LEDDY. Soon after their marriage in 1940 Rita and Jack each offered their medical services in the war effort in Europe. Rita worked in England as part of the British Civil Nursing Services. After the war they settled in Saskatoon and raised their three children: Mary Jo, Jennifer and Michael (Eileen). In Saskatoon, Rita became the elegant hostess of many parties and a hard-working member of several civic organizations. She was particularly committed to the Catholic Women's League and the Saint Paul's Hospital Auxiliary. After the death of her husband in 1991, Rita returned to Toronto where she had 'troops of Friends' and continued her many interests while finding new ways of ser ving the community, especially with Meals on Wheels and the Ecumenical Day of Prayer. She was a true renaissance woman and was known as something of an expert on the Bloomsbury Group. She was always open to new adventures. For many, she became a luminous example of how to age gracefully with wit and humour. Rita is survived by her three children and four grandchildren: Shannon, Connor, Brendan and James LEDDY. She will be greatly missed by her cousins Kitty HIGGINS and Mary Agnes McINTYRE as well as by her Friends of all ages and backgrounds. Rita was predeceased by her father Jeremiah WILKINSON, her mother Mary Jane CARR, her step-father François Regis HERVIEUX, her sister and four brothers and her uncle, Rev. Henry CARR, CSB, whom she spoke of with great affection as a 'best friend.' Rita had a great devotion to Blessed John Henry Newman, and the prayer below, composed by him, was one she knew by heart.
May He support us all the day long till the shades lengthen and the evening comes and the busy world is hushed and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then, in His mercy, may he give us a safe lodging and a holy rest and peace at the last.
The family is grateful to the doctors and nurses at the Princess Margaret, Saint_Joseph's and Saint Michael's hospitals who accompanied and served her these last 2½ years. Visitation at Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home, 467 Sherbourne St at Wellesley, on Sunday, June 22 between 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. (prayers and memories at 8: 00 p.m.). Her funeral Mass of the Resurrection will take place at St. Basil's Roman Catholic Church (Bay and Saint_Joseph Streets) at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23. VINGOE, Phyllis Isobel (formerly McCURRY, née McLACHLAN)
Passed away peacefully on July 25, 2008. Phyllis was born to Lottie and Duncan McLACHLAN, a pair of hardworking Scots, in North Bay, Ontario, on April 24, 1923. Her sister Myrtle CARR and brother Morris McLACHLAN still live in North Bay. Phyllis was an excellent student and she graduated from high school at the age of 15. Although she did not have the opportunity to continue her formal education, Phyllis believed that "one should never stop learning". She continued to be a voracious reader all of her life. Phyllis worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway in North Bay as a stenographer. It was here that she met Ted McCURRY whom she married in 1952. They moved to Rothsay, New Brunswick, then to Toronto and finally to Galt, Ontario. After Ted died in 1978, Phyllis met and married Jack VINGOE and moved to Etobicoke. Phyllis was a strong woman who believed in the power of positive thinking. She lived independent in Etobicoke for many years. People would meet Phyllis once and remember her as "that tall, elegant woman". Phyllis loved to share her passion for ballet, literature, symphony, theatre, travel, bridge and golf with her wide circle of Friends, but she was most special to her grandchildren Erin and Blair of whom she was so proud, her daughter Margot McCURRY and son-in-law Allan ANTCLIFFE. We will miss her greatly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Ballet of Canada or a charity of your choice. A celebration of Phyllis' life will take place at St. George's Golf and Country Club on Wednesday, July 30 at 2 p.m.

FARQUHAR, Alexander James
Alexander James FARQUHAR, native of Brooklyn, Hants County, son of the late Judge Hiram Smith FARQUHAR and Eva Mary DIMOCK, died at home in Halifax on Sunday, March 9, 2008, in his 82nd year. Married for 57 years, he leaves his beloved wife Glennis, brother Hugh (Claudette DERDAELE,) children Alec (Kathleen McDONNELL,) James (Liliane SAYEGH,) Sarah (Randy SUTHERLAND,) Megan (David GRAVES), Donald (Kathryn MYERS), Anaya (Donald CARRIER) and Katherine (Robert LALONDE,) thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and Friends. After first pursuing postgraduate study in physical education at Springfield College, Massachusetts, Alex felt and responded to a call to the ministry, enrolling at Pine Hill Divinity Hall, Halifax, Nova Scotia. While serving on a student mission field in rural Saskatchewan, he met Glennis LAMB, of Wawota, Saskatchewan, and they were subsequently married in 1950. After ordination in the United Church of Canada in 1951, Alex was called to a succession of pastorates in Nova Scotia (Lockeport, Baddeck, Sydney River, and St. Matthew's, Halifax), Ontario (First-St. Andrew's, London) and Quebec (St. Andrew's-Dominion Douglas, Westmount), before bringing his ministry to a close at Zion United Church, Liverpool, Nova Scotia in 1991. As a pastor, Alex was deeply devoted to his parishioners, serving them faithfully and with a profound sense of privilege. The words of Psalm 16: 6 held for him a special significance: 'The lines have fallen unto me in pleasant places yea, I have a goodly heritage'. Known and respected widely for his insightful and scholarly sermons - some of which were included in such published collections as 'Outstanding Sermons from Canadian Pulpits' (Evergreen Press, 1966) - Alex was invited on many occasions to preach at churches across North America and to address various conferences, student convocations and other assemblies. He also represented the United Church in international events pertaining to the Reformed Wing of the World Church, including the 1961 Kirchentag in Berlin, the 1962 Japan Evangelism Project of the U.S. National Council of Churches, and the 1970 dedication of the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. As a member of the United Church Committee on Christian Faith, in 1968 Alex helped to craft the United Church Creed, and as a member of the Committee on Church Union in the 1970's, he participated in conversations then being held between the United Church and the Church of England. During the 1980's, Alex served as President of the Montreal InterFaith Task Force on the Liberation of Soviet Jewry and in recognition of his leadership in this cause, he was presented with an Award of Merit at the 1992 Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Jewish Congress. In 2005, Alex was named Pine Hill's distinguished alumnus of the year. Throughout his life, Alex was passionate about sports and during his early years, he was an outstanding varsity athlete who excelled at track, basketball and football. He was named captain of Dalhousie University's football team in 1945. His summers in youth were occupied with baseball, as he played with the Halifax Saint Mary's softball and baseball teams (provincial runner-ups) and later with teams in Pictou, Lockeport, Shelburne, Nova Scotia and Lampman, Saskatchewan. Alex coached the Lockeport High School girls' basketball team to two Nova Scotia championships in the early 1950's, and concluded his own athletic career in 1958 as a member of the Cape Breton All Stars Maritime Basketball Champions. A funeral service will be held in Edgewood-Oxford United Church, 3055 Connaught Ave., Halifax, on Saturday, March 15, 2008, 10 a.m., followed by a reception at the Atlantic Funeral Homes. A brief committal service will be held in Newport United Church, Brooklyn, Hants Co. the same afternoon at 3 p.m., prior to interment at the Riverview Haven cemetery. Any who are moved to honour Alex's memory with a gift are gratefully encouraged to consider a contribution in his name to the church or charity of their choice, or to Dalhousie University (the Hiram and Eva Farquhar Bursary for students in the School of Social Work, or the Doctor James W. Reid Lectureship in Medical Humanities). The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all who participated in Alex's care. On-line condolences may be made at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com

DANIEL, Jerry
My Final Broadcast Peacefully and prayerfully, in my 69th year, after a courageous battle at Alexandra Hospital surrounded by my family on June 2, 2008 our Lord welcomed me home. I leave behind my devoted and adoring wife of 47 years Diane (TREMBLAY,) and my 5 loving children and their spouses. Jerry Jr. and his wife Roxanne (ANTAYA,) Terry and his wife Terryanne (CARROLL,) Mark and his wife Sherri (SMITH,) Michelle and her husband Jim (MERRIFIELD,) Nicole and her husband Dany (JACQUES.) I will continue to watch over my beautiful grandchildren that gave me more joy than I ever thought possible - Jessica and John DANIEL, Kyle and Brittany DANIEL and Brandi and Daniel LEWIS, Tara and Mitchell DANIEL, Mark and Matthew MERRIFIELD and "Peanut" Jacques as well as my sister Pat PROUSE of Ingersoll. I have been reunited with those who went before including my mom Delia (GATES) 1989 and dad Naboth 1996. My life has been full and blessed. I was fortunate to love my chosen career in broadcasting which spanned over 40 years. Starting at CFCO in Chatham, CHOK in Sarnia, SJCS Stratford, CFPL London, and finally CKOT Tillsonburg where I forged many lifelong Friendships. I also derived joy from my many years of DJ work. It is hard to imagine the number of first dance songs I played for newlyweds over the years and the people who knew me by my unique speakers. I express special thanks to our family physician Doctor Kelly SHAUGHNESSEY who was a tremendous support throughout and the loving care given by the Alexandra Hospital staff. In regards to my illness I am indebted to Woodstock Urologist Doctor VOGALIN and excellent medical staff at the London Regional Cancer Centre including Doctor Mary McKENZIE and her assistants Grace and Paul. I appreciated the constant support of John LAMERS, Owner and General Manager of CKOT Easy 101.3, Elaine BELANGER, Kathy BEEMER, Peter BAUMAN/BOWMAN, Lorette CRUNDWELL, George MANTLER, Doug OLTSHER, Pat PROUSE, Dean and Cheryl SHEVALIER, Louie TREMBLAY and Luanne WATT. Community Care Access Centre and their dedicated caring staff allowed me to spend my final days at home with my family where I wanted to be. God Bless You. God Bless the seen and unseen Angels who kept me and my family in their prayers. I would be remiss not to mention the tremendous sacrifices that my family and extended family members have made while on my journey. Love heals. Friends will be received at the McBeath-Dynes Funeral Home, 246 Thames Street South, Ingersoll Wednesday 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Knights of Columbus prayers Thursday @ 6: 30 p.m. Parish Prayers Thursday @ 8: 45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Ingersoll Friday June 6th, 2008 at 11: 00 a.m. Interment to follow Sacred Heart Cemetery. CARROLL, Earlene (née LEE) (1936-2008)
Faith, Love, Principle, Intelligence, Humour
This is how we know and remember Earlene Lee CARROLL, who died suddenly but peacefully at her home this past week.
She believed greatness and kindness are gifts we need to give each day; that unconditional love means unconditional; that doing the right thing is more important than doing the best thing that we never stop learning and should never stop trying; and that good outlasts all, especially in a game of bridge.
Cowgirl turned city girl, Earlene trained as a nurse in Alberta, lived in Ohio and New York, and in 1965 chose Bramalea-Brampton to settle and raise a family in. She returned to university to study economics and "Lee" became synonymous with the Brampton-Bramalea Real Estate Board. She valued her career a fraction of the value she placed on Friendships she made along her journey.
Earlene sparked radiance everywhere. Her love endures, especially in her sister Pat HOWEY (Calgary,) her children Jim (Texas,) Lee-Ellen (Ottawa) and Richard (Georgetown), and the lights of her life - her grandchildren: Sean, Sabrina, Peter, Gabriel, Quinton, Regan, Muiredach and Jordan.
We thank her for finding us, gracing us, and loving us, 1936-2008.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Scott Funeral Home, 289 Main Street North, Bramption, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. All are welcome. Her remains will be interred in Edmonton next to her pre-deceased sisters Donna LEE and Betty WALLACE, and her parents Earle and Agnes LEE.
In lieu of flowers, donations to The Children's Wish Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
