Driver in fatal crash may have medical condition, police say
By Jamie KOMARNICKI,
Page A9
Joan Patricia
GRYS had just finished the mundane chore of banking
and was blocks from home when the light turned green.
Moments earlier, a black BMW had hit another vehicle about
six blocks east of Coxwell Avenue near Woodmount Avenue and fled
the scene, according to police.
The BMW came barrelling west down Danforth Avenue, steering
around traffic stopped at the adjacent red light, police said.
Ms. GRYS, 51, had just stepped into the intersection at Danforth
and Coxwell when the BMW careened into a van, struck her,
then crashed into a truck before coming to a halt.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The police reconstruction team has collected data and is putting
together a report, said Sergeant Tim
BURROWS of the police traffic
services unit.
Detectives are still collecting and assessing witness statements,
he said.
But the answers to many of their questions lie with the 60-year-old
driver of the BMW, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries
and remains under medical supervision.
Specifically, officials are examining the possibility that the
driver may have a medical condition that affected his driving,
Sgt. BURROWS said. Ambulance personnel at the scene first raised
the possibility, he said.
"We're trying to figure that out - if there was a medical condition,
did it happen before the collision, or was it a result of the
collision," he said.
The man is expected to remain in the hospital for several days,
he said.
Ms. GRYS lived near the site of the collision, Sgt.
BURROWS said.
Her husband, Bill, is devastated by the loss of his "beloved
wife," the officer said.

BURTCH,
Rev.
Hugh
C.
It is with regret and sadness that we must report the death of
our father, the Rev. Hugh C.
BURTCH, former Minister of Grace
and Fairmont United Churches in London, at the age of 86 years
at Stratford General Hospital, on Friday, February 15, 2008.
Dad died of Kidney Disease as a result of a 20 year battle with
Diabetes. Our Father was born and raised in the east end of Hamilton,
on Tregina Ave. and also lived on Mary Street as a teenager.
He attended Ballard Public School and The Eastern High School
of Commerce, wherein he excelled in Sports, Hockey, Baseball
and Pole Vaulting. He was an All-Ontario Pole Vaulter for 1934,
1935 and 1936, one of his Coaches being the legendary Cyl Apps.
Dad was ordained into the Ministry of the United Church in 1958,
though he had been a Student Minister from 1951 in Sarnia, Ontario
at St. Luke's United when it was on Parkview. His last Pastoral
Charge, (or so he thought) was in Hamilton, east end only a few
blocks from where he was born and raised, the twinned Charge
of St. David's United and Fairfield on Barton Street. He retired
or so he thought in 1986 from the active ministry which he loved
so much. Once in Stratford, Ontario, the birthplace of our Mother
Mary Helen
DAVIDSON, who pre-deceased Dad in the year 2000, Dad
very quickly discovered that "retirement" was a relative term,
for he found himself becoming "interim" minister of Centennial
United, also filled in at Ontario Street Baptist Church, and
to some amusement on his part, also in the Presbyterian Church
in Shakespeare, but he very quickly became enamoured of the people
there, and they treated him very well, very well indeed. Dad
died quietly and with dignity, which mirrored his life. He did
not like any fuss made over his life or profession. Dad just
called it "doing the job to which he was called." The funeral
will be held at Central United Church, on Saturday, February,
23rd. Donations to the Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.
W.G. Young Funeral Home, Stratford.

BURTCH,
Linda
Historian, archivist, cartographer, bookmaker, intrepid traveller,
enthusiastic gourmet, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, friend.
Born April 4, 1953, in Morden, Manitoba Died April 9 in Sault
Ste. Marie, Ontario, of melanoma, aged 55.
By Anne MacGREGOR,

Linda possessed great joie de vivre. She was passionate about
everything she was involved in, but her main passion was for
her family: her husband Michael, daughters Sarah and Michelle
and grand_sons Julien, Aidan, Myles, Michael, Stephen and Spencer.
Each stitch that went into the wedding dresses Linda made for
her daughters had love in it. Every summer, in spite of her gruelling
chemotherapy treatments, Linda and Michael cared for their grand_sons
for fun-filled weeks of activity.
Spending time with Linda was always fun. She loved good food
and wine and had so many interesting things to talk about, including
enthusiastic accounts of recent adventures.
As a historian she loved travelling and visiting art galleries
and heritage buildings. A talented photographer, Linda had a
darkroom in her home where she developed her own photographs.
She was an avid gardener, an excellent cook and talented seamstress,
and whatever she produced was perfect. She never spent her time
idly - she always had several projects on the go.
When Linda enrolled at Brandon University in Manitoba, her orientation
leader was Michael
BURTCH. It was love at first sight. One year
after they met, Michael and Linda married and moved to Kingston,
Ontario, where Michael completed a degree in art history. During
this period Sarah and Michelle were born.
In 1981, Michael was appointed director and curator of the Art
Gallery of Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie. The family immediately
embraced the northern lifestyle and relished their participation
in outdoor activities.
Linda and Michael quickly became assimilated into the city's
thriving arts community, and Linda completed a bachelor's degree
in history. Upon graduating, she was hired in the reference department
of the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library, where she was employed
for 20 years.
In the early 1990s, she obtained her archive technician diploma.
The library's archival collection grew tremendously during her
tenure, and now measures 1,100 linear feet. Linda obtained collections
of historic papers from all the businesses that formed Sault
Ste. Marie's industrial heritage. The city lost a valuable asset
in her knowledge and experience.
Linda and Michael loved to travel, but as her illness progressed
they both sensed time was getting short. They embarked on an
intensive itinerary. Within one year they explored Havana, Nova
Scotia, Yellowknife, China, New York, Rome and Venice. Shortly
after their trip to Italy Linda died peacefully at home, surrounded
by those she loved most.
Anne MacGREGOR is Linda's friend.
