along with grandchildren, Jesse, Curtis, Kellam, Cale, Jordan,

Bill served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2 and
then received a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen's University
and a Chartered Accountant degree. In 1955 he joined fledgling
Garrett Manufacturing Limited in Toronto, a division of the growing
Garrett aerospace company in the U.S.A. Four years later he moved
to the Los Angeles headquarters, but his rising star brought
him back to Toronto to run Garrett Manufacturing Limited. He
built it from a small operation to a major manufacturer with
over 1,400 employees, producing top quality equipment for the
aviation and aerospace industries. If you've flown on a major
commercial airliner, Bill's systems, among many roles, helped
control the air you breathed for a comfortable flight. He rose
to become president of Garrett Canada, as Garrett Manufacturing
Limited was renamed after being acquired by Fortune 50 corporation
Allied-Signal. Bill served on the board of Allied-Signal Canada.
After retiring he cofounded Tulmar, a leading vendor of aviation
life support supplies based in Hawkesbury. Bill also worked in
international affairs, twice serving as chairman of the Canadian
North Atlantic Treaty Organization Industrial Advisory Group,
and also as chairman of the Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers
Assoc. of Canada. Out of the office, Bill was passionate about

BURGESS,
Prudence
Elizabeth (née
PYKE)
At home in Ottawa at age 66, on Friday May 9th, 2008. She leaves
her spouse, Andre
MILLAR, daughters Serena and Fiona and granddaughter
Kayla in San Francisco, sisters Bridget and Angela, brother James,
their spouses Brad and Debbie, as well as sisters-in-law Diana
and Mychele. She also leaves numerous close Friends and other
relatives in California, Florida, and elsewhere in the U.S.A.
and Canada. Born and raised in Hudson and Montreal, Quebec, she
attended McGill University and moved to San Francisco and Marin
County with her first husband, Theodore
BURGESS, where they raised
Serena and Fiona, and where Prudence worked as a real estate
agent. They were surrounded by Friends and family who shared
Prue's and Theodore's passion for good food and wine, the arts,
and travel to Europe to savour its cuisine and its history. She
was especially fond of Stinson Beach, where she and Theodore
liked to entertain. Subsequent to the death of Theodore in 1992,
Prudence married Andre and lived in Ottawa, Ontario, until her
death. This new phase of her life saw the making of additional
Friends, and work for Statistics Canada where she interviewed
a wide cross section of Canadian society. In the summer, there
were frequent stays with Andre in Jones Falls, Ontario, at the
Kenney family inn and, in the winter, on Casey Key in Florida,
where her parents had had a winter home. Casey Key, its beaches
and sunsets, and the Smetts family (Bonnie, Bob, Debbie) became
another home for her. Diagnosed with cancer in 2000, Prudence
was determined to beat it until 17 days prior to her death. Throughout
this time she was kindly and assiduously attended by the doctors
Dent (whose care added 4 years to her life), Wong (always
there in "stretcher bay" for her), Robillard, Drodge, Laurie,
Aldridge -- nurses -- Carmen (kindly present at all times of
need), Carol (devoted to her comfort unto the last moments),
Beppi, Debbie, Andrea, Fatima, Sue -- and many others at the
Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, and in her own home. With all
of them, Prudence shared her optimism and her indomitable spirit
to beat the odds. Her sparkling personality was larger than life.
She was an amazing and wonderful woman, with immense sensitivity
and great kindness. She was also wise, funny, willful and passionate,
inspiring others to live life cheerfully, and with gusto. Her
love touched all who knew her, be they family, Friends, professionals
or those just met. Her warm embrace freely given was unforgettable,
even as she lay dying. Andre's regret is not having been an even
more supportive knight to this great lady. She was cremated in
the Gatineau Hills near Ottawa, on May 12th, on a hillside not
far from where they had both recently marked her 66th birthday.
A gathering of Friends and relatives, to inter her ashes, will
be held in Ottawa and
in San Francisco, later this summer. Condolences

BURGESS,
Reverend
Harold
N., B.A., B.Div. (1915-2008)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on July 20,
in hospital, of a very special man who met all of life's challenges
in a positive way. He was a caring husband, father and grandfather
who gave generously of his time and energy. In his ministry,
he contributed greatly to society as he counselled, encouraged
and comforted his parishioners. Harold played a pivotal role
in the establishment of blood donor clinics in Ontario in the
early '50s. He quickly became a regular blood donor himself and
encouraged others to donate too. He was a pioneer in religious
radio and television. In later years, he served on the religious
advisory board at CTV. He will join his beloved wife of 61 years,
V.
Gwendolyn (2003, née
BECKEL) and leaves behind his loving
daughters, Joan
VAN
HOUTEN and Elizabeth
SCHUERMANN and her husband
John.▲
Harold was a proud and cherished Grandpa to Kirsten
VAN
HOUTEN and Kristofor
SCHUERMANN and his wife
Elaine. He leaves
his brothers Gordon (Laurel) and Doug. He is predeceased by his
sister Kathryn. Harold was born in Giles, Ontario. He served
the United Church for 44 years, with charges in Cressy, Oak Lake
(Man.), Thomasburg, Athens (Ont.), Cornwall, Toronto and Etobicoke.
Harold had a great wit and sense of humour. He spent many happy
hours on curling rinks and golf courses. He thoroughly enjoyed
performing marriage ceremonies and did so until the age of 92,
first in his churches and then in the chapel at Mississauga City
Hall. Harold was an avid reader, preferring a good mystery above
all else. He will be greatly missed. Friends may call at the
Turner and Porter 'Peel' Chapel 2, 180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga

time of the service at 1 o'clock on Friday July 25, 2008. For
