Of Eden, formerly of Saint Thomas, passed away at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 31, 2008, in her 62nd year. Dearly loved mother of Lisa THOONEN and her husband Mark, and cherished grandmother of Taylor and Tanner THOONEN, all of Aylmer. Dear sister of Rosemary NUNN of Saint Thomas, the late Donald G. SMITH (1982) and the late Gary J. SMITH (2003.) Loved aunt of Dean NUNN of Calgary, Alberta and Darla NUNN of Saint Thomas. Also fondly remembered by one aunt and several cousins. Born in Saint Thomas, April 8, 1946, the daughter of the late Jack and Pearl (McLACHLIN) SMITH. Betty was a retired clerk at the Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital where she worked in the Central Registry Department for over 25 years. Born in London on December 7, 1924 son of the late Mary Oultram and Francis CASSIN, he was a former business owner and served with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War 2. He will be sadly missed by: his children, Wayne and wife Nancy of Owen Sound, Gwen PAYNE of Sarnia, and Susan BOYER of Vancouver, and their mother Marjory CASSIN, 3 grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Shelley, 3 sisters Marjorie BENNETT and husband John, Lorraine ERICKSON and Beverly HENRY all of London and a brother Kenneth and wife Gerry also London. Beloved husband of the late Colleen (BOLTON) CUTLER (July 2nd, 2006) and dearly loved father of Bonnie CUTLER. Napanee native was on third tour of duty

Kandahar, Afghanistan -- The Canadian Forces have identified the soldier killed by an explosive device while on foot patrol in Afghanistan's perilous Panjwaii district.
Sgt. Jason BOYES of 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba, was struck near Zangabad, 35 kilometres southwest of Kandahar city.
BOYES, 32, born in Napanee, was patrolling with his Canadian and Afghan counterparts when the blast occurred.
"He was a committed warrior, a leader through and through," said Lt.-Col. Dave Corbould, commander of the Patricias battle group.
"He was someone we can all emulate. He represented the warrior spirit 100 per cent."
BOYES' relatives were grieving their loss.
"We are devastated by this news," the family said in a statement issued by the military. "Jason loved his job, he loved the military, and his fellow soldiers loved him back. His world was his daughter, Mackenzie, his wife, Alison, his dogs and his family."
"This was his third tour in Afghanistan. We have always, and still do, support this mission," the family's statement said.
BOYES was fatally wounded while taking part in what the military calls a dismounted presence patrol, travelling on foot instead of inside an armoured vehicle in order to build relationships with local villagers.
Regimental Sgt. Maj. Brian Semenko said he and BOYES talked a lot about the mission over the last few years.
"He was really dedicated to the idea of serving overseas," Semenko said. "He felt the best way to serve was to do it overseas. His idea was not to give candy to children, but to kill insurgents."
Mines and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, are an ever-present threat to coalition forces in Afghanistan, particularly in an insurgent hotbed like the Panjwaii -- a strip of arable land that has seen a great deal of Canadian bloodshed since 2002.

Fallen Canadian was a dedicated family man

Toronto and Kandahar, Afghanistan -- A Canadian soldier killed Sunday night on foot patrol in Afghanistan's volatile Panjwai district was described yesterday as a man whose world consisted of his two-year-old daughter, his wife, family and dogs.
Sergeant Jason BOYES, 32, of Napanee, Ontario, was identified by the Canadian Forces yesterday. He was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based out of Shilo, Manitoba
Sgt. BOYES was killed by an explosive device around the village of Zangabad, southwest of Kandahar City, while participating in a joint Afghan-Canadian foot patrol.
In a statement, the BOYES family said they were devastated by the news. It was Sgt. BOYES's third Afghan tour.
"Jason loved his job, he loved the military, and his fellow soldiers loved him back. His world was his daughter, Mackenzie, his wife, Alison, his dogs and his family," the statement read.
"We have always, and still do, support this mission."
Sgt. BOYES's nickname through high school was "Boysie." Craig ALDERSON, principal at Napanee District Secondary School, said yesterday that the young man played on the volleyball team and basketball team, and was well liked by classmates. Mr. ALDERSON taught geography in the early 1990s, when Sgt. BOYES attended high school.
"He was a decent young man at that time, and obviously he led a fairly distinguished life," Mr. ALDERSON said.
Lieutenant-Colonel Dave Corbould, commander of the Patricias battle group, said the fallen soldier had a "warrior spirit."
"He was a committed warrior, a leader through and through. He was someone we can all emulate," he said.
Yesterday, all federal parties sent their condolences to the family of Sgt. BOYES.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised Sgt. BOYES for being an "exceptionally brave soldier" who deserved Canada's support and gratitude.
"The mission is a difficult one, but we are committed to bringing security and stability to this war-torn country so that future generations may enjoy the benefits of a peaceful and democratic society," Mr. Harper said in a statement.

After a long and very courageous battle with cancer, David MOORE Jr. passed away in St. Catharines April 28, 2008, in his 48th year. Saw infantry duty in Germany during World War 2 with the H.L.I., served as a Merchant Seaman in the years after the war visiting ports all over the world. Longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and worked at Westminster Hospital in London for 16 years. BUCKLEY, William Barron
It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of William Barron BUCKLEY. Bill passed away at Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Bill was born in 1916 in Regina, Saskatchewan and raised in Regina before attending Trinity College at the University of Toronto (B. Comm.). He served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War 2. Following the conclusion of the war, Bill continued his studies in Montreal and received his Chartered Accountant degree. He engaged in private practice in Toronto for the remainder of his career. Bill continued his parents involvement in Church activities and was a founding member of the Donway United Church. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis and his five children Marilyn (Tom SUTTON,) Bill (Anne BUCKLEY,) Tim (Naomie BOYLAN), Philip, Beatrice (Michael COOKSON) and his grandchildren Stephen, Paul, Matthew, Meagan, Laura, Nicholas, Madelaine, Amelia, Petra, Ian and Hannah and his four great-grandchildren. Loving mother of Rick and Kirby (Pat) of Woodford; Karen of Owen Sound and Blair of Bognor. Dear grandmother of Sasha, Sheena, Jed, Cory and Marina and great-grandmother of Shy-Ann. Predeceased by a son Brian. Survived by a brother Ray BOYLE and his wife Barbara of Mississauga and fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Marie and Helen BOYLE. Also remembered by Wayne and John BOYLE. Predeceased by brothers Roy, Charlie, Doug, Norman and Carmen and by a sister Mabel HARRISON. Family will receive Friends at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford on Friday evening from 7 until 9 o'clock. A funeral service, officiated by Reverend Gary PARKER of Christ Church Anglican, will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, July 5th at 2 p.m. with committal and interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Meaford. Survived by Duncan SMITH and his wife Toyce of Chatham, Jean MOORE and her husband David of Windsor, Ruth WILSON and her husband Steve of London. Also survived by grandchildren Robert SMITH (Andrea,) Kim RUSSELL (Chris,) Jeff MOORE (Tina), Melissa BOYLE (Dan), Jennifer, Ian and Stephanie WILSON, and Great-grandchildren Megan, Alex, MacKenzie and Colin SMITH, Matthew and James MOORE and Lucas BOYLE. Mrs. SMITH was an active member of the Eastern Star, Blue Bell Chapter 145 and the Purity Rebekah Lodge 170. BRYDGES, Nelson " Cowboy" Garnet Brydges
Age 87, a long-time resident of Sarnia, Ontario, passed away on April 20, 2008 at Bluewater Health Palliative Care. Nelson was born on July 15, 1920 in Plympton Township to Walter and Sarah (HELPS) BRYDGES and married his loving wife Audrey (SCOTT) BRYDGES on November 29, 1941, Audrey predeceased him in November 2005 and he missed her very much. Nelson is survived by his loving daughters and sons-in-law Geraldine (Donald) STEWARD/STEWART/STUART, and Bonnie (Ross) GENNOE and his two grand_sons who he cherished, Rob GENNOE (Nicole) and Dan GENNOE. Also his extended family Carolyn (Joe) STONEHOUSE, their children Tyler and Nathan MATER, Beau, Brett and Ben STONEHOUSE, and Brian (Pat) STEWARD/STEWART/STUART and their children Matthew, Michael, and Kate. Brother of Doris GOODALL, and brother-in-law of Irene BRYDGES and Eileen BRYDGES, Ken (Evelyn) SCOTT, Fred SCOTT, Jean (Earl) OPPENHAUSER, Yvonne (Keith) TINNING, Mary (Don) SWINDALL, Pat (Ron) PATTERSON and Jim MILLER. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Walter and Sarah (HELPS) BRYDGES, brothers and sisters-in-law Walter and Margie BRYDGES, Lewis BRYDGES, Clifford and Hazel BRYDGES, Robert BRYDGES, and sisters and brothers-in-law Lucy and Jack KECK, John GOODALL, Violet and Clifford KADEY, Evelyn and Don McINTYRE, Mary and Ruel BOYNTON. Also sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ruth and John MILLINGTON, sisters-in-law Dorothy MILLER and Audrey SCOTT, and son-in-law Orval DUFFY. Nelson fought bravely in the Second World War and was in the first wave at Normandy. A Brick has been placed at Juno Beach remembering the service he gave to his country. Nelson continued to be a faithful member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He will be fondly remembered by his good Friends Ian and Sheila McKILLOP, and also all the many Friends he made at Tim Horton's on Colborne Road. His nickname was "Cowboy" because he always wore his western hat, boots and jeans - a throw back to his younger days around horses. He loved animals all his life. Nelson had 10 pin bowled for almost 50 years and was still bowling in early March and made many Friends through his bowling associations. We will all miss him dearly, but know that he is now with his beloved Audrey and they are back together and in God's hands. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 11: 00 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
