BOURGEOIS,
Freda
Wife, mother, oma, aunt, friend, entrepreneur, volunteer, hostess
extraordinaire. Born January 27, 1927, near Starbuck, Manitoba
Died October 28 in Ottawa of endometrial cancer, aged 80.

Freda BOURGEOIS lived life large with big ideas, big hugs and
a big freezer full of baking ready to share with family and Friends
or anyone who happened to drop by.
Her determination - some might say stubbornness - was forged
during the Depression. Freda was only 6 when her mother died.
Her father, a stern, pious, Russian Mennonite homesteader, soon
married the widow from the next farm. The family now numbered
eight, and Freda did her chores, helped feed the farm hands and
scrubbed the floors.
Freda was born with crossed eyes. The family couldn't afford
medical care and by the time she had surgery, her right eye was
blind and reading was a challenge. This only made her more tenacious.
In a favourite "olden-days" story told to her grandchildren,
she refused to accept that at Mennonite school only boys raced.
Freda rolled down her socks, tucked her skirt into her bloomers
and ran, as she said, like the wind. She won.
Freda left the farm at 17 and headed to Winnipeg, where she worked
at Moore's Business Forms. In the summer of 1947, she caught
the eye of her girlfriend's date at the roller rink. Matt and
Freda married two years later.
She worked as a cashier at Safeway while Matt finished a commerce
degree and became a chartered accountant. With two daughters,
the family followed Matt's career in the federal government,
living in Winnipeg, Calgary, Ottawa and Beaconsfield, Quebec
Freda became an accomplished seamstress, milliner, Girl Guides
leader and adult educator. Avid square-dancers, the couple do-si-doed
across Canada.
In Beaconsfield, Freda joined forces with Myfanwy Sinclair to
start Bouclair House of Fabrics. The successful business was
work and fun. When it was sold and Freda followed Matt back to
Ottawa, she began Freda's Sewing Services.
Matt "retired" in 1982 to Haiti, and later Jamaica, as a tax
adviser, and Freda plunged into these worlds. They returned to
Canada in 1997.
The grandchildren remember their oma for her cinnamon buns on
Christmas mornings, back tickles, foot rubs, handmade quilts,
her love of leopard prints, scary driving (she was foot-to-the-floor
and blind in one eye), big rings and even bigger hugs.
At the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa
Hospital, she brought food and comfort to cancer patients even
while she was ill.
One doctor said Freda was the most elegant sick lady he knew.
On her last day, Freda painted her nails, put on red lipstick,
smiled and said goodbye. She promised Matt she'd leave a forwarding
address.
Paulette BOURGEOIS is Freda's daughter, and Natalie and Gordon
URQUHART are her grandchildren.

CLARKE,

Peacefully at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital on the morning of
February 24th, 2008, in his 93rd year. Predeceased by his cherished
wife of over 60 years Jeanne Gabrielle
CLARKE (née
CARBONNEAU.)
Beloved father of Joan Alice
BOURNE and her husband Ken, Peter
John CLARKE and his wife Carole, Mary Lou
TAILOR/TAYLOR and her husband
Harry. Dearest grandfather of Paul, Peter and his wife Jennifer,
Tara and her husband Joseph, Stephanie, Jacqueline and Danielle
and great-grandfather to Connor, Blake and Andrea. Predeceased
by his first son David and his first grand_son Jeffrey. Jack was
the youngest and last survivor of four siblings and had a truly
full and blessed life. Together with his two brothers Lorne and
Jim carried on the wholesale produce business started by his
father Samuel Wilmot
CLARKE under the name Clarke's Produce Limited.
The company carried on business under Samuel in the greater Toronto
area and was subsequently expanded by his sons to all of southern
Ontario and Muskoka. After nearly 90 years in business the company
was sold to Everist Brothers in 1985 and Jack continued with
Everist until he was 81 years of age. He was the ultimate master
salesman. His associates would say he could sell sand to a desert
nomad. He was the consummate businessman and entrepreneur and
in addition to the wholesale produce business he was a real estate
developer, financier and manufacturer. Towards the end of his
business career at eighty years of age he had the respect of
customers and of every notable chef in the City of Toronto. Jack's
classic line when asked how he felt was "I feel like a million".
Jack's philosophy of life was unbridled optimism with acts of
kindness and love of his fellow man. His membership in the Toronto
Board of Trade stood for over fifty years. His enthusiasm for
all aspects of the business world contributed to his zeal for
life. Jack will be sadly missed by his family and all who were
fortunate to know him. A service of remembrance will be held
on Saturday March 1st at 11: 45 a.m. at the Chapel of The Old
