in History. While teaching history for three years at Notre Dame
University of Nelson, British Columbia, where he also served
as Dean of Men, he earned a PhD in History from Queens University.
In 1970, Bill began a 36 year career in the History Department
at Mount Allison University. He served as Department head for
eight years, Dean of Arts for seven years, and Director of Research
Administration for three years. A particularly effective teacher
and administrator, Bill was pleased with his many students, 49
of whose theses he supervised, several of whom completed their
own books and articles. Despite his own heavy load, Bill published
a substantial list of works that which will be published in a
bibliography in an upcoming Acadiensis issue. Bill was twice
honoured with the Paré Award for Excellence in Research and Teaching
he also received a Corpus Christi College visiting Fellowship
at Cambridge University, and the Stiles-Bennett Professorship
of History at Mount Allison University. He also was awarded the
Kwansei Gakuin Professorship of Canadian Studies in Japan but
had to return to Canada early because of illness. Bill was one
of a number of Mount Allison faculty who successfully demonstrated
the combination of research and teaching at the undergraduate
liberal arts and science level that provided Mount Allison with
its excellent reputation. Even after retirement, Bill kept abreast
of the literature in his field and was known for his ability
to recall all the details of the hundreds of books and articles
he read each year. He also loved to travel, and although he and
Rhianna explored many places in Canada and the U.S., by far his
favourite place was the United Kingdom; Bill agreed with Samuel
Johnson who said: 'When a man is tired of London, he is tired
of life.' Bill was a faculty member who had an impact on faculty,
students and administration at his institution and he will be
remembered and missed. The family would like to welcome you to

BLACKWELL,
Florence
King
Lifelong writer, wife, mother. Born June 7, 1913, in Toronto.
Died November 2, 2007, in Toronto of a stroke, aged 94
By Richard
BLACKWELL,
Page L8
Except for the first and last few years of her life, Florence
BLACKWELL was most comfortable in front of a typewriter.
Growing up in Toronto, Florence studied modern languages at the
University of Toronto, where she contributed to The Varsity student
newspaper in the early 1930s.
Her addiction to travel took hold right after university, when
her parents gave her a trip to Europe as a graduation gift. On
one memorable trip as a young woman, she travelled by ship to
the Caribbean and South America. During a stop in Barbados, one
of the crew lifted from above a hotel bar a framed print of Frans
Hals' famous painting The Laughing Cavalier. The crew and a few
of the passengers signed the back and presented it to Florence.
She kept it her whole life, always hanging it close to her typewriter.
In her declining years, when she was confused about her whereabouts,
her sons could reassure her that if the print was on the wall
nearby, she must be at home.
Florence started a career in advertising as a copywriter at Simpsons
department store. She worked briefly in New York, and moved to
Ottawa during the war to work for the Wartime Information Board.
At an ad agency in Montreal in the mid-1940s, she was one of
the few senior female copywriters. Despite lower pay, she thrived
on the creativity of the business and the open-mindedness of
her colleagues.
It was at a meeting of the Henry George School in Montreal that
she noticed a tall, red-haired man who, when asked by the chairman,
eloquently summed up the previous week's meeting. Her future
husband Phil
BLACKWELL was, not surprisingly, a writer.
Florence's agency career ended when she gave birth to two sons,
Stephen and Richard, in the early 1950s. But her writing never
stopped. She began what would be decades of freelance work, producing
dozens of magazine articles on every subject imaginable, from
fashion design to puppetry to basement renovations.
Her sons would often return home from school to find the dining-room
table covered in research material and a typewriter. But it would
always be cleared away in time for a family dinner.
Florence continued writing throughout her retirement, when she
and Phil moved to Niagara-on-the-Lake and then to Toronto. In
her 60s she wrote a Globe and Mail column about retirement, cheekily
titled One Foot Only. She found buyers for her freelance pieces
well into her 80s.
Florence gave up writing only when forced to by physical frailties
and fading memory, spending her last years at a nursing home
in the company of many of her favourite books.
Richard BLACKWELL is Florence's son.
