BENTALL,
Charles
Howard
Passed away on July 13, 2008 surrounded by the love of his family
and after a long and fruitful life. Predeceased by his much-beloved
wife Shirley, his parents Charles and Edna and his brother Clark.
He is survived by his brother Bob and his children Louise, Kathi,
Joan (Rick) and Barney (Kath). He was a much-loved 'Bumpa' to
his grandchildren Jeff, Tara, Tim, Lucas, Brad, Carly, Cody,
Erin, Tasha, Jessica, Dustin, Sacha, Amy and Becky and their
significant others. The recent arrival of his great-grandchildren
Dax, Sophie, Ryland, Cale and Brooke were an endless delight
to him. Howard was born in Vancouver on October 19, 1913, was
raised in the city and earned his B.A. from the University of
British Columbia. Although he set out to become an engineer like
his father Charles, Howard changed course and chose ministry
in the Baptist church as his life's calling. He earned a Bachelor
in Divinity from McMaster University in 1937, where he was also
a member of its award-winning debating team. He was called to
First Baptist Church in Regina in 1938, where he was to meet
the love of his life, Shirley May. They were married in 1946 and
then moved to Toronto where Howard served as the minister of
Walmer Road Baptist for 13 years, during which time their four
children were born. In 1956 Howard was elected President of the
Canadian Baptist Federation. The family moved to Calgary and
First Baptist Church in 1959 where he was Senior Minister for
12 years. When he retired from active ministry Howard continued
to serve the Baptist Union of Western Canada in various capacities
until he was nearly 80. He and Shirley moved back to Vancouver
when he finally retired in 1992. He then focused his energies
on the creation of the Rivendell Retreat Centre on Bowen Island,
the Salsbury Community Society and other social initiatives of
Grandview Calvary Baptist Church. Grandview is a diverse congregation
and has been close to his heart since childhood. He was a longtime
member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in Stanley Park and
proud owner of a succession of finely-crafted wooden motor vessels
on which he enthusiastically captained his family and Friends
on many trips through the beautiful coastal waters of British
Columbia. Howard found peace, community and purpose as Elder-in-Residence
at Rivendell Retreat for the last three years of his life and
took great pleasure in the company of his ever-growing family.
He was a gracious and deeply compassionate man who touched many
people over the course of his life. A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, July 26th at 2: 00 p.m. at Grandview Calvary
Baptist (1803 East 1st Avenue). In lieu of flowers, please send
donations to Salsbury Community Society, 1824 Venables Street,
Vancouver, V5L 2H7.

CARSEN,

In her 89th year, suddenly, after a brief stay in hospital, from
lung disease. Clementine leaves behind her husband Walter, daughter
Johanni and son Robert. Clementine immigrated to Canada with
her parents from Mannheim, Germany, shortly before World War
2. She adjusted to a new way of life, set to work in several
capacities, married, and was instrumental in helping her husband
to build up his new business (W. Carsen Co). She later worked
as a very active member of the Volunteer Committee of the Art
Rental Department of the Art Gallery of Ontario, of which she
was a Founder Member. But it was her discovery of yoga which
completely altered her life. She became a remarkable teacher,
and her gentleness combined with her intuition and generosity
made her a much loved teacher, first in Toronto, then at the
Prem Anandham Ashram in Beaverton, Ontario and in more recent
years in Naples, Florida, where her classes were always full
to overflowing. She donated the proceeds of her teaching to charity,
which was always an important part of her life. Clementine was
a devoted wife and mother, and a loving, concerned friend. She
had a wonderful sense of humour, boundless curiosity and genuine
interest in others. She will be greatly missed by everyone that
she met. Her family is grateful to her many Friends who gave
her so much love and support in recent years and especially during
the 3 weeks she spent in hospital. Particular thanks go to Doctor Weaver

Born in Calgary,
he grew up during the depression in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
At the age of 14 he purchased a Model T Ford and had spent two
months overhauling the car until a truant officer found him.
After graduating from his beloved Queens University in Engineering,
he served Canada as an officer in the Army for five years during
World War 2. While helping the family business one summer at
the Nakina Hotel, he met Joan Avril
PARKINSON of Wales, England
who became his partner for life after a courtship of one month.
Victor applied his Engineering skills throughout his distinguished
career, including 25 years as the Branch Manager of Sheldons
Engineering in Toronto and later as a consultant to the air handling
industry. Amherst Island was one of his passions where there
was never enough time spent outdoors with family and Friends.
Always a true gentleman until the end, outdoor sportsman, golfer,
curler and avid reader of history. We will miss his cocktail
hour ritual, his laughter and his daily question of "Joan is
the tea made?" As Joan is currently hospitalized there will be
a private cremation on Friday, May 30th with a Memorial service
to follow in due time at Humphrey Funeral Home. Donations to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Alzheimers Society will honour
