ARMSTRONG--In loving memory of our Dad and Grandpa, Scott Armstrong, who
left us July 5, 2007.
It is hard to believe that a year has gone by,
We have so many reminders of you
When we eat ice cream, we think of you
When we hear a loon call, we think of you
When we look for morels and are lucky enough to find some, we think of you
When we hear the Georges, Jones and Strait, we think of you
When we see a Carling cap, we think of you
When we hear a partridge drumming, we think of you
When we ride in the truck, we think of you
When we work in the garden, we think of you
When we see the birds at your feeder, we think of you.
We are lucky to have all these memories to remind us of you.
We miss you so much.

KISBY,
Russ
Fitness guru, husband, father, grandpa, mentor, friend. Born
March 22, 1940, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Died July 20, 2007,
in Mississauga, Ontario, of mesothelioma, aged 67.
By Sally ARMSTRONG,
Page L8
There are rumours that Russ
KISBY - the fitness prophet who begged,
cajoled and teased Canadians to get off their couches during
his 30-year reign at ParticipAction - is leading a celestial
exercise class.
Russ was one of the founders of ParticipAction, and its president
for most of its existence.
His hugely successful formula for fitness was based on fun and
a clever collection of advertisements and activities.
His antics for getting Canadians to "walk a block" became the
stuff of legends. As director of athletics at the Montreal Young
Men's Christian Association in the 1960s, he started a noon-hour
fitness class for business executives, unheard of for the two-martini-lunch
crowd.
When I was a rookie physical education teacher, Russ called and
suggested I pinch-hit at one of his lunchtime classes. No is
never an option when replying to one of his requests.
"Would you mind wearing a costume?" he asked with the ever-present
grin previewing mischief ahead. Clad in a skimpy Santa's elf
costume, I rolled into the gym on a mat trolley with six of his
fitness assistants also dressed in Santa gear.
Humour was Russ's trump card on and off the job. He was the dad
who was always available for shenanigans such as the Cottage
Olympics, which featured water hurdles and watermelon-seed spitting.
His Halloween haunted house attracted every kid in the neighbourhood.
Russ hardly ever missed his son Tait's football games at Bishop's
University, even though it meant a weekend trip from Mississauga,
Ontario, to Lennoxville, Quebec And when his daughter, Marlis,
set out on a bus tour of Europe, he accompanied her to London
to make sure the trip got off to a good start - in a London pub.
Adventure was like a mantra to Russ. On a hiking trip in Banff
with Tait, then 11, he explained that taking the gondola to the
top of Sulphur Mountain and eating in a fancy restaurant with
tourists was no way to enjoy the outdoors. They climbed the mountain
and picnicked at the summit, until a herd of hungry mountain
goats surrounded them.
At his funeral the congregation sang This Land is Your Land as
a tribute to the health fix Russ had given Canada. And then,
as if he was still standing in front of the old gym at Montreal's
Young Men's Christian Association urging people on, a ParticipAction
colleague led the crowd in arm circles, stretches and body twists.
His wife Merle, children and grandchildren, Wes and Molly, joined
in. Like everything else Russ did in his life, the workout left
everyone smiling in memory of the man who served Canada and brought
so much joy to his family and Friends.
Sally ARMSTRONG is Russ's friend.

Our dear friend Gord passed away peacefully, at home, during
his Sunday afternoon nap after a long, courageous and dignified
fight against cancer. He was triumphant in the face of inevitable
defeat for he valued Friendship above all else, and the value
of his Friendships was never more unassailable than at his life's
end. Kind, loving, fun, surprising, honest, dedicated, dependable,
all those wonderful qualities bundled into one great person.

The support and love Gord has had from his many Friends in the
class of 1970 at St. George's, colleagues from his years in federal
politics, and from Friends at Rocky Mountaineer Vacations has
been much appreciated. We would also like to thank Doctor John Sehmer,
and the physicians and staff of the British Columbia Cancer Agency.
Gord's political career began with the Young Conservatives of
Canada. He graduated from University of British Columbia - Class
of 1974 and worked for many years for the Hon. John Fraser, P.C.,
O.C., OBC, Q.C. in Ottawa and Vancouver before joining the
Rocky Mountaineer Vacations as a train manager for the last 14 years.
Gord served on the boards of numerous community organizations
and was a life long participant in the campaigns of many civic,
provincial and federal candidates. Gord looked as great decked
out in his kilt for the Sir John A. MacDonald Society as he did
riding with Friends at Douglas Lake. A bit of a George Hamilton,
our Gord liked to tan year round either in some exotic local
or on the sunny shores of Savary and Gambier Islands. He enjoyed
traveling, watching the Canucks, celebrating the achievements
of loved ones, and cooking dinner for Friends. He has left us
with amazing memories. 'How wonderful life is when you're in
the world' surely was written for our Gord. In lieu of flowers

SPELLER,
Doctor
Stuart (1926-2008)
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of
Dr. Stuart
SPELLER - family physician, devoted father and husband,
amateur radio operator, musician, woodworker, machinist, motorcycle
rider and philanthropist. Stuart died peacefully at Fenelon Court
in the morning of June 20, 2008, in his 83rd year. Stuart was
predeceased by his wife, Muriel, who passed away in 1997. He
is survived by his six children: Donald, Katherine Hanbury (Bob),
David (Corrine), Lynda
ARMSTRONG, Patricia
ARMSTRONG (Brad),
and Kenneth. He was also predeceased by his two daughters Gladys
and Cheryl. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren:
Maretta (Mike) and Bethany
HANBURY,
Ryan and Kristen
SPELLER,
Cristian SPELLER and Kaitlyn
ARMSTRONG.
Stuart is predeceased
by his sister Enid and brothers Donald and Randal. Born in Toronto,
Stuart initially lived in several locations as he followed his
Salvation Army parents to various postings throughout Canada.
He received his medical degree at Dalhousie University in Nova
Scotia. After graduation, he practiced medicine for over five
years in Glace Bay and Guysborough before moving to Ontario where
he had practices in Bethany and Peterborough. His medical career
began long before Ontario Health Insurance Plan when doctors
still, made house calls at all hours, did much of their own lab
work, and sometimes delivered babies at home. By the time Stuart
hung up his shingle after more than 47 years as a family physician,
the practice of medicine included high-tech diagnostics, universal
health-care coverage, on-line refresher courses, and more-or-less
regular work hours. For him, medicine was a sacred calling of
the highest order. He loved his work with a passion; and for
that reason alone, he continued to practice long after his 'official'
retirement at age 65. Stuart was a generous provider to his family
and to numerous charitable organizations. An intellectual and
a perpetual student, he learned new skills in a wide range of
disciplines throughout his life. Stuart was a skilled woodworker,
competent metal machinist and also an electronics enthusiastparticularly
in the fields of computers and amateur radios. He also played
several brass instruments, including the trumpet in the Bethany
marching band, the tuba in a local Peterborough band, and the
baritone horn for several years in Salvation Army bands in Peterborough
and Fenelon Falls. In his 70's, Stuart even got his motorcycle
license. Stuart will be missed by all, particularly his family,
his Friends, and the thousands of patients he treated and comforted
throughout his long and wonderful life. Visitation will be held
at Comstock Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 356 Rubidge Street,
Peterborough on Monday, June 23, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial
service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, June 24th at 2: 00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army or the Peterborough
Regional Health Centre Foundation would be appreciated.

McDONALD,
Julian
Hugh
Of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully at the St. Norbert
Personal Care Home on April 1, 2008. Hugh was born in Winnipeg,
Manitoba on September 16, 1927, the youngest
son of the late
John Hamilton and Marion Cecil
McDONALD. He was predeceased in
2000 by the love of his life, his beloved wife of forty-two years,
Diane Mary
McDONALD. He was also predeceased by his sister Marion,
and his brother Ian (Janet). Hugh is survived by his children:
Elizabeth GAGE

of Winnipeg; Donald (Teresa) and grandchildren Nicholas, Rebecca,
Davis, and Madeleine of Calabasas, California; Gillian
QUINN
of Breckenridge, Colorado; Heidi

Benjamin and Connor of Ottawa; and Heather
STEFANSON
(Jason)
and grandchildren Victoria and Thomas of Winnipeg. He is also
survived by his sister Elizabeth
ARMYTAGE of Winnipeg, and Cynthia
(Andrew) HUNTER of London, Ontario, along with many cousins,
nieces and nephews. Hugh was raised in Winnipeg and received
his early education at Tuxedo Public School and Bishop Ridley
College, prior to joining The Royal Canadian Naval College in
1944. After the war he enrolled in studies at University of Manitoba,
graduating from the Faculty of Law in 1952. Hugh then began his
law career at the firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman and after several
energizing years left the firm to join the family business. Hugh
had many business endeavors throughout his long tenure as President
of the McDonald Grain Company Ltd. These activities primarily
led him into real estate development where he spent over 25 years
building and developing the residential sub-divisions north of
Winnipeg in the rural municipality of East St. Paul. In addition,
there are a variety of residential and storage facilities within
Winnipeg which still owe their origins to Hugh's intensive activities
and calculating insight. Early on in life, Hugh's keen interests
in community responsibility led to his passionate involvement
in charity work and eventually politics. Hugh became an active
member of the Progressive Conservative Party, and sought election
to the Manitoba Legislature. Over the course of his life, Hugh
was active in all provincial and federal elections. Few people
loved Manitoba and Winnipeg more than Hugh did, and he spoke
passionately about his city and Province to anyone he came into
contact with throughout his extensive travels in Canada and abroad.
Never far from his heart was the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club
where he was an original Life Member and keen sportsman. Hugh
was a devoted father and an incredible family man. His loving
children were the beneficiaries of several trips throughout North
America in the family motor home, often enjoying 'preferred parking'
status at many of the continent's finest ski resorts and beaches.
From an early age Hugh developed a passion for Lake of the Woods,
where he spent over six decades of summers at the family camp,
Nebinitawin. For over forty years, he, Diane, and their children
were able to experience the beauty of the Lake together, and
share many good times with family Friends and relatives. Hugh
loved to entertain and 'Neb' was the preferred location for many
great parties and family weddings held over the years. Lake life
also brought out the passion Hugh had for sailing and later,
tennis, both of which he keenly pursued through his membership
and leadership in the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. Hugh
loved his community, cherished his Scottish heritage and was
an active parishioner of St. George's Anglican Church and a proud
member of The St. Andrew's Society. Hugh knew and understood
the importance of giving back to the community and never shied
away from participating in his community's life. He was a past
Chairman of the Board at Balmoral Hall School, past board member
of Ridley College, past Chairman of the Children's Hospital Research
Foundation, past board member of the Health Science Centre Research
Foundation, and
an Honorary Life member of the Progressive Conservative
Party of Manitoba. Hugh will be remembered and loved for his
good-natured disposition, keen sense of humor, natural cleverness,
value of tradition and above all, for the love he showed towards
family and Friends. He will be sorely missed by his children,
grandchildren, Friends and relatives, all of whom take solace
in knowing he is now at peace and with Diane watching over all
of us. A celebration of Hugh's life will be held at St. George's
Anglican Church, 168 Wilton Street at Grosvenor, on Friday April 11,
2008 at 1: 30 p.m. followed by interment at Saint_John's Cathedral
and reception at The Manitoba Club. In Lieu of flowers, the family
