Husband watched as wife hit
Alleged racers face charges after two women are killed.
By Chris DOUCETTE, Sun Media, Mon., October 8, 2007
Derreck DOUGHERTY watched in his car's rearview mirror in horror
Saturday as his wife and her best friend were killed in a crash
in Brampton that police say was caused by street racers.
The Beeton man is feeling almost as helpless now as he waits
to see how the justice system deals with two brothers who were
arrested on Hwy. 50 north of Castlemore Rd. as Cynthia (Cindy)
DOUGHERTY, 49, lay dead in her Pontiac Grand Am next to Mariarosa
(Mar) DALSASS, 44.
"There's so much senseless slaughter out there. How many more
innocent people have to die before this stops?"
DOUGHERTY asked
angrily yesterday, fighting back tears as he recalled his nightmare.
Steven MacHADO, 22, and his brother Brian, 27, are each charged
with two counts of criminal negligence causing death.
DOUGHERTY said his wife, a mother of two and a grandmother of
two, was driving about 10 car lengths behind him heading to Toronto
for a day of shopping with her friend, a high school teacher
twice been named the Toronto District Catholic school board's
teacher-of-the-year.
Just after noon,
DOUGHERTY looked up at his mirror and saw his
wife's car smashed apart on the road behind him.
He pulled over and ran to Cindy's aide, but it was too late.
Her car was a mangled wreck in the centre of the highway, surrounded
by several other destroyed vehicles. Tires, axles and other debris
were strewn everywhere.
"It was the worst moment of my life."
DOUGHERTY tried unsuccessfully
to free the women.
He then phoned
DALSASS' husband, Murray
OSBORNE, who raced to
the crash believing his wife was only unconscious.
Peel police said it appears the Audi, driven by the younger sibling,
pulled onto the gravel shoulder to pass a dump truck and lost
control as he re-entered the road.

Hi Dad; It's your son Tom here. Just a quick note to let you
know we're all doing fine down here. Peg and Warren are still
living in Saskatoon. Quinn and Cullen are growing up fast. They're
seven and five now. Chelsey is in college now and oh yeah - you're
going to be a great-grandfather in a few months. Jessie and Jonathan
are having a baby in September. Your grand_son Brendan is turning
into quite an athlete. He's a goalie now in hockey and a darn
good one - not quite the caliber of Ken Dryden yet - but who
knows - maybe some day. By the way - Happy 100th Birthday. Always
in our thoughts: Tom and Laura, Peg and Warren and families
