COLEMAN, Doctor William Hugh (April 13, 1918-September 22, 2007)
Bill COLEMAN passed away peacefully on September 22, 2007 in
Orillia, Ontario. He was the beloved husband of the late Nell
(née ROY;) cherished father of Diane (Bryan
MERCER) in Calgary,
Dale (Colin
WHEELER) in Whitby, and Hugh (Ennis) in Orillia
devoted grandfather of Robin, Tara, Jocelyn, Jeff and Mark, and
great-grandfather of Fiona; much-loved brother of Catherine
PERCIVAL,
Helen (predeceased) and Herbert (predeceased); and fond uncle
to two nieces and four nephews. Born in Palmerston, Ontario to
Dr. Herbert and Mary Moore
COLEMAN,
Bill moved with the family
to Toronto as a young boy. He completed his DDS degree at
the University of Toronto in 1943, earning his way by working
on Great Lakes boats and picking tobacco. He then served two
years as a Captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force dental corps,
posted to Aylmer, Ontario. He married his high school sweetheart,
Nell ROY, an occupational therapist, in 1942 in Hamilton. After
leaving the Air Force, he set up his dental practice in Toronto,
and practiced until 1983, when his health mandated retirement.
He was a dedicated member of the Lions Clubs in Leaside, Markham
and Bracebridge, coordinating their fall pumpkin sales and many
other aspects of fundraising and social events. After 60 years
of participation, he was presented with a Lions Lifetime Award,
of which he was justly proud. 'Papa' was a fun guy. His big smile
and infectious sense of humour will be fondly remembered by all
of his family, as well as by his Friends from Toronto, Markham,
Bracebridge and Orillia; by his dental patients who loved their
'Dr. Bill'; and by those with whom he sang in choirs and in Gilbert
and Sullivan operettas, played golf, curled, played bridge, camped
and cottaged, boated and fished, sipped manhattans, and just
enjoyed life. He loved the outdoors, the cottage and the lake
- a passion shared by his children - and always had a dog to
follow him around. He loved a good garage sale, grilled a great
steak, could fix anything, and produced both good furniture and
bad wine from his workshop. The family extends their sincere
appreciation to the staff of the Birchmere Retirement Residence
and of the Dialysis Unit of the Orillia Hospital for their kind
care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity
of your choice. No service by request; a private cremation has
taken place. Messages of condolence are welcomed at www.mundellfuneralhome.ca
