Father, sons die in two separate crashes
By Geoff NIXON,
Page
A10
Members of an Ottawa Valley family are reeling from the loss
of two adult brothers and their father in a pair of tragic automobile
crashes late in the Labour Day weekend.
Ricky LANDRIAULT, 36, of the Township of Greater Madawaska, was
found in his sport utility vehicle on Tuesday morning near Calabogie,
Ontario
Police believe he was speeding at the time of his crash and that
the wheels of his vehicle slipped off the pavement. When he tried
to correct his path, he veered across the road and struck a large
tree.
He died alone at the scene.
Renfrew
Ontario
Provincial Police Constable Janice
SAWBRIDGE
said yesterday Mr.
LANDRIAULT had last been seen at the Lannin
Funeral Home in nearby Smiths Falls.
He had been planning the funerals for his brother and father,
who were killed in a crash in Montague Township earlier in the
weekend.
Louis LANDRIAULT
Jr., 40, and his father, Louis
LANDRIAULT Sr.,
68, died when the car they were travelling in - a Dodge Neon
driven by Louis Sr. - crashed into a hydro pole late Sunday afternoon.
Police said they, too, were speeding and lost control of their
vehicle.
Constable SAWBRIDGE said the
LANDRIAULT family deaths were the
latest in a string of preventable collisions that have plagued
Ontario roadways this summer.
"It's been horrible," she said. "We've said it all summer: 'Buckle
up, slow down, stop the aggressive driving.' "
Neither Ricky nor Louis Jr. were wearing seatbelts at the time
of their deaths.
"Look at what this poor family now has to go through," Constable
SAWBRIDGE said.
Perry SSAINTBIN, a family friend who had known the brothers and
their father for five years, said yesterday he mourns most for
those left behind - the 15-year-old and three-year-old sons of
Louis Jr., who are going to grow up without their dad, their
uncle and their grandfather.
"Both the kids are just hurting inside so bad, Mr.
SSAINTBIN
said yesterday, fighting back tears.
Constable Paige
WHITING of Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police
said yesterday that Louis Jr. and his father were trying to catch
up to another vehicle. The other vehicle - driven by Sharon
DONNELLY,
37, common-law wife of Louis Jr. - was so far ahead they could
not even see it at the time of their crash.
The couple had just had a fight, Ms.
DONNELLY said, adding she
had wanted to have a temporary separation and Louis Jr. was upset.
She then took a drive from the house they shared in Smiths Falls
to let things cool off, and he and his father had followed.
Now she will never get to see him again.
"I didn't want to leave him," Ms. Donnelly said yesterday. "This
was the man I was going to stand beside the day he died - when
he was 80."
Although the two had only met last December, they had planned
to get married in three years time.
"He was the love of my life, he was very generous," Ms.
DONNELLY
said of Louis Jr. "I waited 37 years to meet a man just like
that. He was perfect in every way."
The two brothers and their father will have a joint memorial
service at the same funeral home where Ricky helped to plan services
for Louis Jr., and Louis Sr., only hours before his death.
