She shall be sadly missed though fondly mused by all. Those
privileged to have known her can attest to a life, lived fully
as the embodiment of faith, unwavering selflessness and a tireless
devotion through her compassion for the betterment of, not only
those she knew, but many unmet. Demonstrated by her many years'
involvement in her community including tenure as Director of
the Credit Reserve Association, President of the Mississauga
Symphony Woman's Committee and as a perennial volunteer for the
Cancer Society, she never demanded more than she did of herself.
Others could only revel at her pace - a bar set high - physically,
emotionally and spiritually. In eighty-four short years, she
wasted none, travelled many, learned much and let all be savoured.
Surely, now she rests in Heaven's embrace. Friends will be received
at The Funeral Home of Skinner and Middlebrook, one block west

BELL, Mary-Ellen (née
THORNBURY)
It is with deep sadness that her family announces the death of
Mary-Ellen
BELL.
She died peacefully in the early morning hours
of July 30th, 2007 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Beloved
wife of the late George E.
BELL.
Loving and devoted mother of
Jilean (Mark
ROTHARMEL.)
Much-loved and devoted 'Nanny' to her
grandchildren Owen and Marina. Mary-Ellen was very fortunate
to be part of a large and loving family and the support and love
of the Thornbury clan extends like a warm embrace to all of us.
She was also blessed with the love of many caring nieces and
nephews who thought the world of her. Her deep connection to
her family extended to her beloved grandchildren upon whom she
bestowed praise, affection and love. She created many wonderful
memories for her family that they will cherish forever. Mary-Ellen
touched everyone she knew with her thoughtfulness, warmth and
generosity. She lived life to the fullest and pursued many activities
and interests. She was a beautiful and elegant woman and a natural
athlete who excelled at many sports from semi-pro baseball to
golfing and competitive curling and, in her later years, she
took up tai chi. She had a lengthy career at Confederation Life
before her marriage, quite an accomplishment in those days. Mary-Ellen's
varied interests ranged from antique-hunting to gardening and
she happily enjoyed traveling near and far whether at the cottage
preparing for large gatherings of family and Friends or traveling
across Canada and the U.S. Underpinning all these things were
her strong sense of family values and her care and concern for
others. Mary-Ellen was an active volunteer at a great number
of church and community events throughout her lifetime. Her strong
sense of values, her boundless energy and her love of life are
among the many memories of MaryEllen we will hold close to our
hearts. The family wishes to thank their Friends, neighbours
and extended family for their love and support and to thank Sylvia
Partab, Mary-Ellen's friend and companion, for her compassion
and caring from the first moment we met her. The family will
receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel,
1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 5-8 p.m.
on Thursday, August 2nd. A Family Service of Remembrance and
Celebration for Mary-Ellen's life will be held in Woodville United
Church, Woodville, Ontario on Friday, August 3rd at 1: 00 p.m.
Interment at Smith's Cemetery, Woodville. Reception to follow
at Woodville United Church. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations
in MaryEllen's name may be made to the Sunnybrook Foundation
or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Condolences and
memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

LARSEN,
Doctor
Donn
Dr. Donn LARSEN was born in Copenhagen, on December 4, 1927,
and died of cancer on May 15, 2007, in Vancouver. Donn was an
Eagle Scout who prided himself on thinking outside the box long
before that term was coined. Donn was passionate about business
and negotiations, beginning as a black marketeer and business
entrepreneur when just a teenager in occupied Denmark. He was
an Industrial Designer and, after immigrating to Canada, operated
Donn Larsen Office Interiors Ltd. It was an innovative and successful
firm specializing in industrial and furniture design, office
space planning and interior construction. Donn was elected a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, England, and was
appointed as an Honorary Member of the Registered Interior Designer
Institute of Alberta in 1983. After retiring from his business,
Donn continued consulting in the design field, became a mentor
to many aspiring business people, and volunteered his unique
and spirited efforts to a number of organizations. Donn was the
Danish Consul for Edmonton from 1977-1998, receiving the Order
of the Dannebro from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for his long
and dedicated service. Donn was first a member, and then the
Chairperson, of the Governing Council of Athabasca University,
from 1981-1992. After extensive travel and consultations with
other distance learning institutions, Donn received an honorary
doctorate in Business Administration from Ramkhamhaeng University
in Thailand. He was the first non-Thai to be so honored. Governor-General
Adrienne Clarkson honored Donn's commitment and service by awarding
him a Grant of Arms in 1999. Donn also received much recognition
for his contributions to international humanitarian projects
and other public service. A lifelong learner, Donn was always
eager to expand and share his knowledge, and promoted innovation
in education. Donn was an accomplished pianist, who passionately
believed that music was a necessary part of life. Donn was eccentric,
brilliant, and didn't suffer fools gladly. Donn and his wife
Ella loved entertaining, and hosted many wonderful parties in
their Old Glenora home in Edmonton. Donn and Ella also kept an
apartment in the West End of Vancouver since 1970, and retired
there in 2001. Donn and Ella were married for over 53 years.
She was his partner in everything and his number one supporter.
Sadly, Ella's illness with Alzheimer's' Disease separated them
prematurely. Predeceased by his parents and nephew, Per
CHRISTENSEN
Jr., Donn is survived by Ella, now a resident of Yaletown House
in Vancouver, and many nieces and nephews, Friends and colleagues.
He will particularly be missed by niece Dorte
PITTAWAY, great-niece
Margot PITTAWAY, nephew Paul
CHRISTENSEN
(Kim
ROTHERY,) and companion
Marion ROLSTON. No service by request, as Donn would much rather
have a party than a funeral. Flowers gratefully declined, but
donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
Donn loved telling stories, so please share a story and offer
a final Skol!
