BUDD,
Arthur
Edward
Gilbert
Artist, blacksmith, father, husband, farmer, mechanic, welder.
Born October 2, 1914, in Edmonton. Died April 10 in London, Ontario,
of natural causes, aged 92.
By Marian PORCHAK,
Page L6
Arthur was the first child of Mabel and Albert
BUDD. He was born
in Edmonton, shortly after his parents had moved west. But in
1922, Arthur's parents returned to Southern Ontario to farm.
Farming was undergoing a change from horse-drawn to tractor-pulled
equipment. With Arthur's love of mechanics, he learned to repair
"whatever needed fixing," creating new parts as needed. When
tractors became scarce during the war years, Arthur and his dad
built one using an old car.
In 1937, Arthur met Madge, a teacher at a local elementary school.
Arthur serenaded his intended bride by flying over her boarding
house in an airplane. They married in 1940.
In 1942, Arthur was called to serve his country, leaving his
wife and two small children. He joined the Ordnance Corps, but
later was assigned to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical
Engineers. In December, 1944, Arthur and his corps headed overseas.
While in England, he continued using his mechanical skills to
repair jeeps and ambulances.
Arthur and Madge were blessed with six children. They instilled
in them the values of honesty, fairness, education and teamwork.
Arthur believed in "living off the land." The family worked hard
to manage the animals, care for the pets and to plant, hoe and
harvest a very large garden and maple sugar bush.
Arthur was known locally as the one to have the spare parts for
collector machines and cars. He could fix anything and, until
he was too old to do it himself, he did all of the household
and car repairs. He also maintained full-time employment in the
manufacturing of industrial machinery for 40 years.
Arthur's retirement gave him time to rekindle his passion for
blacksmithing, which he had apprenticed for while in the Forces.
He had his own anvil and forge, but he also did demonstrations
at local heritage days and worked the blacksmith shop at Fanshawe
Pioneer Village in London, Ontario, for several summers. He was
among the 15 founding members of the Ontario Artist Blacksmith
Association.
Arthur lived 48 years on his 10-acre hobby farm. After Madge
passed away, he lived there alone before moving to the veterans'
wing at Parkwood Hospital in London. There he worked in the arts
workshop creating pieces such as silk scarves and ceramic items.
While there, his favourite line for phone messages to his eldest
daughter was, "All's quiet on the western front!"
The western front will be even quieter now. Arthur's memory lives
on in the hearts of his loved ones who treasure his creations.
Arthur's daughter Marian
PORCHAK submitted this on behalf of
herself and her three sisters.

(PORTER.) A lifelong teacher and artist, Helen earned her Master
of Arts in English at Victoria College, University of Toronto.
In her storytelling career, she brought to children and teenagers
a unique vision of Canadian and world myth, fairytale, legend,
and short fiction. Her storytelling performances for adults explored
family relationships, contemporary literature, and the theme
of "the grotesque." In the later stages of her career, Helen's
performances increasingly featured her own writing. Her one-woman
shows at The Senator, The Luna Lounge, and many other venues,
presented vividly drawn characters from the streets of Toronto
and the hills of the Ottawa Valley. Her book, a fictionalised
set of memoirs entitled The Bully and Me, has empowered students,
parents, and teachers to confront a frightening aspect of young
people's lives. In her dual careers, storytelling and teaching,
Helen passionately developed her own creative gifts. Simultaneously,
she encouraged others to do the same. Helen's students remember
her as a mentor who nurtured their imaginations and supported
their dreams. Her fellow storytellers will always be grateful
for her motivational workshops and the opportunities she provided
through the National Storytelling Theatre, which she founded
and directed. Her countless Friends will cherish forever her
love and generosity of spirit. A private service was held on
Friday, September 14, at the chapel of the Rosar-Morrison Funeral
Home. A memorial celebration of Helen's life will be held on
Saturday, September 29. Details to follow. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made in Helen's memory to Princess Margaret

Helen Carmichael
PORTER was gifted from her earliest years. She
had a swift imagination and intense energy, leaving no doubt
that she was marked for stardom. She was attuned to the foibles
of others and crafted these idiosyncrasies into weird and wonderful
characters.
Her father, a Toronto United Church minister, used his estimable
oratorical skills to enrapture his family with stories at the
family cottage near Huntsville, Ontario Each summer evening,
he gathered everyone around the hissing gas lamp and read aloud
from such classics as Uncle Tom's Cabin, The Vicar of Wakefield
and Grimms' Fairy Tales. Helen never forgot the delicious thrill
a gothic tale brings to an imaginative child.
At summer camp, Helen wove ghost stories out of her vivid imagination
and memory. As a young adult, she terrorized her nieces and nephews
with tales of horror and suspense - and they loved every second
of it.
Following university, Helen taught high-school drama and English,
spending many years at Toronto's Vaughan Road Collegiate. She
empowered her students through her imagination and generous spirit,
and their appreciation empowered her. Yet, she needed room to
create beyond the classroom. Making the leap to the then-unknown
field of professional storytelling, she refined her talents in
theatres, churches and schools across Canada.
In 1986, Helen married Gary
HOPHAN, and together with his son,
Philip, they established a creative home that became the birthplace
of the National Storytelling Theatre, providing a vehicle for
her to write, produce and perform shows. After the theatre's
demise she continued to write, collect and tell stories while
also leading workshops and teaching part-time.
Helen told her stories to audiences across Canada in performing
arts venues and on radio, television and film. In 1996, she was
invited to lead an assembly of high-school students on the topic
of bullying. This inspired her to draw on her formative experiences.
After eight years of touring this show, Helen wrote and published
The Bully and Me: Stories that Break the Cycle of Torment.
In May, when Helen was diagnosed with leukemia, she saw cancer
as just another bully to be reckoned with - and she was determined
to come out victorious. Each morning, she laced up her sneakers
to power-walk through the city streets she loved. She bravely
fought the bully to the end with the loving support of her family.
Ross SMITH is Helen's nephew and Anne Porter
PARIS is her sister.
