PILFOLD, Joseph Henry (April 24, 1920-August 7, 2007)
Joseph Henry PILFOLD was born a true cockney in Bermondsey at the South end of Tower Bridge in London in 1920. His mother and father were once elected Pearly King and Queen. His handsome looks and flaming red hair which remained until very late in life made him stand out, as did his ability as a crooner, soccer player, dart player and jovial wit. At nineteen he saw active service in the British army in West Africa, catching malaria. He volunteered as a gunner on merchant ship convoys crossing the Atlantic and was torpedoed twice on the same day in the Bay of Biscay in two different ships, surviving 36 hours in the water before being rescued.
Near the end of the war he was assigned to the entertainment unit. He met a beautiful war widow with two young children, Amy SUCH (née GUNTHORPE) while performing at the Adelphi Theatre and they married in Christmas of 1948. Amy and Joe opened up a florist shop then immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1953. There, Joe worked in real estate, at one time opening his own business before being appointed the sales manager for Pitney Bowes. He and Amy spent their life moving back and forth between Canada and the United Kingdom several times before settling in British Columbia some 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife Amy, step-sons Lionel and Peter SUCH, their wives Alice SUCH and Joyce KLINE grandchildren Lionel, Kerry, Stephanie, Luba and Julia and great-grandchildren Spencer, Stirling, Morgan and Tuesday. A celebration of Joe's life will be held at First Memorial, 1155 Fort Street in Victoria, on September 8, at 3.00 p.m.

RITCHIE, John Weir
It is with sadness, yet recognition of a life well-lived, that the family announces that John Weir RITCHIE departed from us on July 6, 2007 at Rockwood Terrace in Durham.
Beloved son of Edgar and Bessie RITCHIE, John was born in 1918 at his parent's Elbow, Saskatchewan farm where he lived until the age of four. When his father died at 24, John moved with his mother to Durham, Ontario and joined his uncle Thomas WEIR's family.
Married to Sarah (Sadie) OLIVER in 1944, they lived on their Old Durham Road farm near Priceville to raise two children, John Oliver and Rosemary. In addition to farming, John worked at Hewgill's sawmill in Pricevilie and for both Farquhar and John MacKINNON over the years, and drove a high school bus route. Retirement took John and Sadie to their retirement home, "Cape Horn" on the outskirts of Markdale.
Always well-respected by his community, John was noted for his humility and kindness as he exemplified rural life, enjoying all that it offered. He was an enthusiastic member of Annesley United Church, the Markdale Curling Club and a ten-year volunteer at Rockwood Terrace. Predeceased by his wife, Sadie in March 1997, and his son, John Oliver in February 2007, John is survived by his daughter, Rosemary RITCHIE (Wayne PILKINGTON) of Vancouver and sisters-at-heart, Mary (Ken) HALL of Scarborough and Margaret (Robert) MONTGOMERY of St. Catharines.
Funeral service of remembrance and thanksgiving was held at Annesley United Church, Markdale, on July 13 with Rev. Don PLETSCH presiding. Music during the service consisted of the congregation singing the family favourite "O God of Bethel" and "Faith of Our Fathers". Also providing music were the Gospel Couriers and Ian LEITH playing his fiddle. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, South Line, Artemesia.
Memorial contributions towards the endowment fund for John's son can be made to: John Oliver Ritchie Scholarship Fund, c/o Douglas College Health Sciences Dept. Batchelor Science of Nursing Faculty, Box 2503, New Westminster, British Columbia V3L 5B2.

WAREHAM, Jessie (née BORDEN)
Died peacefully at her home near Priceville, Ontario, surrounded by her family on Monday, July 2, 2007 after a courageous and graceful struggle with cancer, which defeated her body but never her spirit or sense of humour. Born in Toronto on October 12, 1936, Jessie is survived by loving husband and best friend, Tom WAREHAM, daughters Mardi and Jacquie, son Michael and wife April, and son Joe and wife Alison. Sadly missed by grandchildren Amber, Courtney, Rebecca, Callum and Maggie. Dear daughter of Millie BORDEN and the late Michael BORDEN and beloved sister of Dorothy DACYSHYN. Jessie graduated from the University of Western Ontario in London as a journalism major and was a lifelong member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. A resident of Cambridge (Galt) for many years, she was editor of the Lifestyle section of the Cambridge Reporter daily newspaper and was a driving force in the creation of the Cambridge Volunteer Bureau. She was also president of the Cambridge Chapter of the University Women's Club. A lifelong interest in dolls and handicrafts led her to start a home business, Rainbows Fabrics. She and Tom enjoyed traveling all over Ontario to craft shows and gave much joy to their customers and fellow vendors. Jessie also loved to cook for Friends and family, and her annual gifts of Christmas cookies were coveted by all who were lucky enough to receive them. She touched many lives with her kind words and generosity, and even in her final days continued to give all she could to her family. We will miss her. The family would like to thank the oncology unit nurses staff at Owen Sound Hospital, Doctor RICE and Doctor QAVI, social worker Krista McCORKINDALE, the nurses and doctors and staff at Durham Hospital, Community Care Access Centre, Victorian Order of Nurses nurse Elayne McCANN, family doctor Mary PILLISCH, our anchor in the storm, and Debbie and Helen of the Durham Clinic. The family deeply appreciates the courage and resilience of Jacquie WAREHAM, the main caregiver and guiding light. Every family member was integral to the outstanding care Jessie received. Also, the family is deeply grateful to Jessie and Tom's Friends and relatives for their love and compassion during this time. A private service for immediate family will be held at McCulloch-Watson Funeral Home in Durham. A celebration of life for extended family and Friends will be held in Cambridge later this fall. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice.
