PASHLEY, John
Television man, rum enthusiast, raconteur. Born June 15, 1940, in Hove, Sussex, England. Died May 22 in Toronto of multiple causes, aged 66.
By Nicholas PASHLEY, Page L8
John PASHLEY arrived in Canada in 1953, clutching his cricket bat. He had a posh English accent and impeccable manners, as you'd expect from a Brighton College boy.
That September, John enrolled in Grade 9 at Weston Collegiate in Toronto's west end, a school that placed no premium on manners or a good accent. Mocked by his peers for saying "Thank you" to a bus driver, John saw he had to change. Virtually overnight, he transformed into a North American teenager.
This horrified John's parents, but it was no bad thing to be the younger brother of a teenager connected to popular culture. John had a letter printed in the Toronto Telegram blasting the older generation for its criticism of Elvis. Let them listen to their Frank Sinatra, he wrote, but I'm going to buy every record Elvis ever makes.
A more mature John PASHLEY found room in his life for both Presley and Sinatra. He always found some new singer, some new band, and recently discovered downloading, which freed him from having to add to his prodigious record collection.
John left school early and went to work at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in television, an industry in its infancy. Still in his teens, he was chosen to work the 1959 royal tour. John worked as a cameraman (and was cast as such in the 1976 film Network; that's him on the camera crane in Peter Finch's big scene) and later moved into directing and producing. John worked with actors, athletes, musicians and celebrities of every sort, in the process winning two Can Pro awards.
John was a big guy, a hellraiser who drank too much, smoked too much, stayed up late and never met a vitamin he liked. But he was doing fine until, working in Vancouver in 1979, he was set upon by a gang of thugs in a club. They beat him and left him for dead. John was made of tough stuff, but the beating took a toll.
Shortly before John died, a female employee at Toronto General commented on his beautiful blue eyes. Those eyes had been noticed by women before. Twice married, John found the last passion of his life in 1992, Lorraine PARISI, and loved her in sickness and in health for his last 15 years.
Increasingly it was in sickness - three heart attacks, a quadruple bypass, an aneurysm, even flesh-eating disease. In John's hellish last two months, everything that could go wrong did. But he never lost his good manners or his sense of humour. The day after being diagnosed with lung cancer, John had a word of fraternal advice for me: Don't take up smoking. Message received, big brother.
Nicholas PASHLEY is John's brother.

PASINI, John " Jack" London
John " Jack" London PASINI reluctantly and frantically burst into this world with celebratory enthusiasm at 2: 27 a.m. Sunday, August 19th 2007… on his mommy and daddy's first wedding anniversary. Weighing in at 7 lbs 14 oz and at a lengthy 22 inches long, Jack's Bergamasck/Slovak heritage is obvious as he continues to snack and snooze his way through each new day. Mommy, Rebecca (nee STASKO,) in eager and hushed tones whispers, "Finally, I can drink a good glass of Amarone!" Daddy, Gian Paolo, proudly exclaims, "Non vedo l'ora di andare per boschi Eng montagne con Jack!" Nonno Gianni and Nonna Teresina PASINI and cousins Marco and Lisa, (of Clusone, Italy) can be heard echoing "Fantastico" across the Alps. Grandma Nancy is now occupied in a kitchen lock-down after discovering Dido (Grandpa) Joe STASKO force-feeding little Jack kielbasa and cabbage rolls. Aunts and Uncles from around the world are busy declaring their resemblance to the most dynamic, cheerful, intelligent, stylish, adventuresome, imaginative newborn of 2007.
