He moved to London, Ontario in 1921 with his family and then to Saint John, New Brunswick before settling in Ottawa. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years Hannah May LAYLAND and his daughter Gail BUTLER, as well as his sisters Elsie HAMILTON and Alice GALBRAITH. Harold was a long-time employee of the Bank of Canada, retiring as Chief of the Public Debt Department in 1972. He was an avid violinist, who loved classical music, art and nature. He played violin in the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and also served on its board of directors as treasurer for many years. But his special passion was discussing politics, especially with his grand_son, Michael of Ottawa, who, along with his wife Sarah FOY, dedicated their time to seeing to Harold's needs in his later years. Harold leaves behind his sister Ethel BOSENCE of Saint John, New Brunswick son-in-law David BUTLER and wife Sandra of Guelph, Ontario; granddaughter, Marjory McDONALD, her husband Ian and their children, Carolyn, Erin and Brendan of Toronto; granddaughter, Ava BUTLER, and her husband, Al NEGRAZIS, and their children, Ashley, Lauren and David of Goodwood, Ontario; grand_son, Michael, his wife Sarah, and their daughters, Charlotte and Rebecca of Ottawa; and grand_son, Steven BUTLER and his wife, Tracey of Toronto; as well as various nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Doctor SALSETO, Harold's long time family physician as well as to all the caring staff at Riverpark Place. Harold leaves a legacy of love and an enthusiasm for life. His guiding light and words of wisdom will be deeply missed by his surviving family members and Friends. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Sunday, September 16 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Interment to follow on Monday, Sept, 17 at 10 a.m. at Pinecrest Cemetery, 2500 Baseline Rd., Ottawa.
