After a long and joyful life, Nora Agnes SMITH (née THOMAS) passed away peacefully at the Avalon Care Centre in Orangeville, Ontario, on November 11, 2007. Born in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia, she was daughter to the late Theresa (née GRAY/GREY) and Charles Hugh THOMAS; beloved wife of the late Frank SMITH; and predeceased by siblings Margaret, Mary, Gordon, Gerald and Aubrey. Nora was the loved mother of Robert SMITH of Campbellton New Brunswick, Betty STARR and husband Mike of Alton, Ontario; Dear grandmother of Tig STARR and wife Tonya, James STARR and partner Brandi SHERMAN, Amanda STARR and husband Greg RAMPLEY, Caroline (SMITH) ROWE and husband Mark, Richard SMITH and wife Rachel, Anna SMITH and partner Jeremy METALLIC; Great-grandmother of Eric, Ian, Irelynd, Ella, Gregor, Caleb, Caidra and Catherine. Nora will be sadly missed by her many relatives and Friends. The family will receive Friends at the John T. Donohue Funeral Home, 362 Waterloo Street, London Ontario, on Thursday November 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Peter's Cathedral Basilica, Dufferin Avenue at Richmond Street, London, Ontario, on Friday, November 16, 2007 at 10: 30 a.m. Interment in Saint Peter's Cemetery. MacKINNON, Kenneth Joseph Chisholm, M.D., F.R.C.S.C.
Mahoney's Beach, Antigonish County, died peacefully at age 86 on October 8, 2007 surrounded by his family at Saint Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, of prostate cancer. A man of deep faith, humility, compassion and intellectual curiosity, he touched and changed many lives. His many interests included fly-fishing, gardening, meditation and his property at Mahoney's Beach. Born in Antigonish in 1921, he was the son of Doctor William Francis and Mary (CHISHOLM) MacKINNON. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie Medical School. After his marriage to Ann Frances MEECH in 1945, he practiced medicine with his father in Antigonish and his father-in-law Doctor Lloyd MEECH in North Sydney before moving to Montreal. They resided there for over 30 years where they raised their nine children. He is survived by his second wife Beryl MacINTOSH; children: Sheilagh (William HUDON), Southside Harbour, Nova Scotia and Denver, Colorado Jo Ann (Chris MURPHY), Halifax; Doctor David (Geraldine), Tappan, New York; Mairi (Sasha MANACAS), Montreal; Doctor Susan (Bruce TUCKER), Highland Park, New Jersey; Kenneth (Laura SANTINI), Montreal Dr. Laura (George CAWKWELL), Kingston, Ontario; Kathryn (John METCALF,) Halifax; daughter-in-law Diane, St. Andrew's, Nova Scotia. He is also survived by his sisters Maureen MacGILLIVRAY and Patricia MacNEIL and brother Rev. Gregory MacKINNON of Antigonish 24 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Ann, son Wm. Lloyd of St. Andrew's, Nova Scotia; 5 siblings, 2 in adulthood (brothers William and John of Antigonish.) Doctor MacKINNON received his postgraduate medical training at McGill University, joining the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital and McGill University in 1953. He was appointed Urologist in Chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1959 and Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Division of Urology at McGill University in 1969. In his latter years at the Royal Victoria Hospital, he was Chairman of the Medical Board and Director of Professional Services. In 1958, he was a key member of the transplant team which performed one of the first successful kidney transplants in the world. He held visiting professorships at 13 medical centres in Canada, the U.S. and Israel. In 1979, he and Ann moved to Nairobi, Kenya where he was Executive Director of the Aga Khan Hospital. They returned to Nova Scotia in 1982 where he became Chief of Staff at the Halifax Infirmary and Adjunct Professor of Urology at Dalhousie University. H Eng established a Palliative Care Unit at the Halifax Infirmary. He and Ann moved to Antigonish and in semi-retirement, he directed the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Martha's Hospital and helped establish others around the province. Among many honours, Doctor MacKINNON was awarded Doctor of Laws by Dalhousie University and St. Francis Xavier University and received the Canadian Urological Association Achievement Award. He served as President of the Canadian Urological Association and the Canadian Academy of Urological Surgeons. He loved and lived life with passion. Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass will be in St. Ninian's Cathedral on Friday at 11: 00 a.m. Burial in the parish cemetery. Peacefully at Central Place in Owen Sound on Friday June 22, 2007. In her 74th year, Helen Marguerite STEAD (formerly METHEREL, née MITCHELL) the beloved wife of the late Wilbert Carl STEAD. Loving mother of Hedley METHEREL and Sue, John METHEREL and his wife Donna, Doug METHEREL and his wife Laurna and Mitchell METHEREL. Loving step-mother of Pauline and her husband Norman SUNDBORG and Paulette PAPINEAU- COUTURE. Proud grandmother of twelve. Dear sister of Gord MITCHELL and his wife June and Peter MITCHELL and his wife Betty. Helen will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews. Passed away peacefully in Oakville on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the age of 72 after a long illness. Wife of Stephen BURKART. Selfless and devoted mother of Margaret "Meg" and Michael (wife Radana) METSON and loving sister of John (wife Mary) and the late Kathryn (husband Les) FAICHNEY. Predeceased by her parents Emma and Walter. Proud grandmother of Spencer, Laura and Bradley HARMAN and of Emily and Joshua METSON. She is remembered by Patrick HARMAN and John (wife Gayle) METSON. Carolyn, who began her career as a teacher, adored children, animals and her many summers at Port Elgin. She gave so much of herself to others and will be sadly missed by her extended family and the many Friends from across the miles that she faithfully connected together through her caring and frequent letters. A Service to Celebrate the Life of Carolyn will be held 2: 00 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2007 at the Saint_John's United Church, 262 Randall Street, Oakville. After a long and determined struggle with cancer at Princess Margaret Hospital on Wednesday September 19, 2007 at the age of 62. Former Senior Executive at Liquor Control Board of Ontario. David, will be missed by his loving wife and partner Janet, sons Michael and Christopher, mother-in-law Eva GLYN- JONES, sisters Joan CAMPBELL, Pat COLLIE (Bill), Barb BELL (Gord BELL), brother-in-law Ian GLYN- JONES (Cathy,) sister-in-law Penny METZA (Bob GEORGE.) He will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Kathleen WILCOX and father-in-law Ogwen GLYN- JONES. David will be especially missed by his golfing and curling buddies and his many other close Friends. Maureen Claire ROPCEAN passed away on September 25, 2007 at the age of 76 years. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy CLYNE and Raymond CHISHOLM and her husband George. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Susan Dawn TURNER (née MORNINGSTAR) and husband Roger of Okotoks, Alberta and Cheryl Anne MORNINGSTAR and husband Robbie METZA of Whistler, British Columbia. Grandchildren Brett, Adam and Jena TURNER of Okotoks, and Birken and Braden METZA of Whistler; one sister Gwen NICKSIC and nieces and nephews of Kingsport, Tennessee. Maureen was born and raised in Edmonton. When the twins were young, some time was spent in the Maritimes where good Friends were made. Maureen returned to spend the rest of her life as an Albertan. She loved her Friends and family and loved life. After a courageous battle fought with dignity, Bob passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2007. He leaves his wife Marg (HUGHES) and his beloved sons, Peter and Daniel. Predeceased by his parents Alvin John and Beth METZGER of Hanover. He is survived by brothers, Allan (Karen) of Guelph and John of Hanover. Bob will be missed by his many cousins and three special Aunts - Margaret KLINCK of Chilliwack, Alice (Claus) ANDRESS of Nanaimo and Claire HOTSON of Kelowna. He was a favourite brother-in-law to Ann and Greg NAHERNE, Mary and Bob MOORE and Janet and Jim MacKEY and a caring uncle to several nieces and nephews. Bob inspired those around him during the last 19 months with his determination, always maintaining his sense of humour and positive attitude. Fishing at the pond in Hanover, the cottage at Baysville, Saturday morning hockey games, collecting rare coins and working with his colleagues and clients at Fahr and Hall Chartered Accountants were all passions enjoyed by Bob. A service to celebrate Bob's life will be held at 11: 00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 14th at Rosedale United Church, 159 Roxborough Drive, Toronto. Reception to follow at the church. Bob believed every child should have the opportunity to experience camp and thus, if desired, donations can be given in his name, in lieu of flowers, to Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children with cancer, 60 St. Clair Avenue East, Suite 201, Toronto, Ontario, M4T 1N5 (416-961-2267).

Elizabeth BOESE, of Hanover, passed away at The Village Seniors' Community, Hanover on Thursday, October 25, 2007. She was 83.
Elizabeth was born in Temerin, Hungary, daughter of the late Franz and Theresia (née UNTEREINER) METZINGER. She was a member of the Harmony Club and a former member of the Paisley Rebekah Lodge.
Survived by daughters Theresa Boese KNUCKEY of Perth, Australia and Leigh Anne BOESE of Hanover. Also survived by brother Michael (Eva) METZINGER of Hanover, brother-in-law Kurt (Minnie) BOESE of Kitchener and sisters-in-law Erna BOESE, Thea METZINGER, Gretel BOESE and Hanna BOESE, all of Germany. She will also be remembered by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband Henry BOESE, sister Theresa BARTH and brother Hans METZINGER.
Visitation was held at Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover on Saturday, 2-5 p.m. where a Funeral Service was held on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at 2 p.m. Carla JENKINS officiated. Interment in Hanover Cemetery.

The former Elsie DIETERLE was the beloved wife of the late Erwin METZNER. She is the loving mother of Bernhard and JoAnne METZNER. Sister of Rolf DIETERLE. Her memory will be cherished in the hearts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Raymond and Donna METZNER and their children Jennica, Christopher, Karl and Connor as well by Heidi and Salvatore SPERANZA and their children Amanda and Emma. Beloved wife and best friend of Sandy EL BAROUDI for forty-eight years. Dearest daughter of Michael and Isabel (BINNS) SULLIVAN. Also predeceased by her brothers Brian and Patrick SULLIVAN. Cherished mother of Mona MacKENZIE (Gordon,) Helen THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON (Christopher), Mark EL BAROUDI (Shelley WOLOSKI), Susanne CARSLEY (Louis,) and Laura EL BAROUDI. Remembered with fondness and Friendship by her cousins Charlotte GRAHAM Virginia ALLENDER (WELSH), Carolyn LOUGHLIN (WELSH) and Robert WELSH; Maureen KOLPAK (SULLIVAN) and Brenda METZNER (SULLIVAN) Marjorie STEAD (BINNS) and Sylvia LAWES (BINNS;) Timothy BREWER, M.D. Gail attended Middlebury College and received her M.B.A. (Finance) degree from McGill University. She was born in Long Island, New York and resided all of her married life in Canada, the last thirty-six years on Heath Street West in Toronto. She was generous with those who were in need wherever they might be in the world and she dedicated her life to the care of her family. As a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, she worked quietly and diligently to help bring the churches in her community closer together through events like the Good Friday Walk. As her children grew up, Gail developed a passion for the investment business and economics. She became a stockbroker, then a teacher (Investing for Women; Branksome Hall) and later took up writing for newspapers in Montreal and Toronto, latterly becoming a free-lance reporter for the Report on Business in the Globe and Mail. She was passionate about her garden, flowers and plants. She adored her pets, cats in early years (Johnny and Fluffy) and Labrador Retrievers in later years (Anna, Lucy and Holly). She loved walking with her dogs, and spending parts of her summers on Lake Huron (Grand Bend) and Lake Simcoe (Shanty Bay). She was delighted by the Opera Atelier and attending the theatre. She cherished entertaining family and getting together with old Friends. Gail was uncomplaining and encouraging to those around her as she faced a difficult and debilitating challenge over the last months. A private service was held for the immediate family after her death and a celebration of her life will take place in October (details of the arrangements for this event will appear in these columns in late September/ early October).
