LEGG,
Fred
Husband, father, grandfather, friend, confidant, volunteer, golf
enthusiast. Born September 14, 1938, in London, Ontario Died
June 21 in St. Catharines, Ontario, after living with multiple
sclerosis for many years, aged 68.
By Barbara
LEGG,
David
LEGG and Heather
McLEOD, Page L8
Fred LEGG approached the ball on its tee and swung hard. An athletic
young man, he was a regular presence on golf courses and basketball
courts. Only this time, his balance deserted him.
Returning to his feet, he finished the round. Walking away from
the 18th hole, Fred and his partners knew he had played his last
game.
Multiple sclerosis slowly took away more than his swing. His
legs failed him, then his arms. He needed a cane, then two canes,
a scooter, and finally a wheelchair. In later years he was immobile
from the neck down. From the neck up he remained the same man.
With each new stumble, his response was equal parts acceptance
and defiance.
Fred was diagnosed when his two children were about 10. Faced
with looming limitations, the family became enthusiastic travellers.
Fred wanted to see every Major League Baseball park in North
America. He was kept from that goal only by the sport's demand
for new stadiums.
He and his wife, Barbara, were active members of the church,
played countless hours of bridge with Friends, and attended concerts
and college basketball games. He, quiet and resolute, was president
and treasurer of the Multiple sclerosis Society chapter in St. Catharines.
She, assertive and charming, helped organize numerous fundraisers.
Out of devotion first and necessity second, they were an indivisible
team.
Unable to golf himself, Fred endlessly tweaked his wife's swing.
Later, unable to see his five grandchildren as often as he would
have liked, he recorded a telling of Robert Munsch's Smelly Socks
so they could forever hear his voice.
Fred was a scholar of corny puns and an avid gardener - sitting
on his deck monitoring those who volunteered to mind the flower
beds.
The wheelchair became mere formality. To Mason, one of his young
grand_sons, Fred was simply "sit-down grandpa." As Fred's mobility
became limited, visitors to their home became numerous and frequent.
In later years his voice weakened, but this too literally drew
people closer.
Over the past year, Fred's health deteriorated. During one hospital
stay he told his son if the end was near he could leave satisfied,
knowing nothing was left unfinished.
And yet, the day before Fred died, severely weakened by infections,
he continued to love life and was neither willing nor ready to
give up. He told his daughter that even though there wasn't seemingly
much to live for, it was enough.
Barbara LEGG is Fred's wife, and David
LEGG and Heather
McLEOD
are his children.
