son dies in freak truck accident
Crushed by wheel as father tested brakes on tractor
By Bob MITCHELL,
Linda
NGUYEN, Staff
Reporters
A distraught father is mourning the loss of his 30-year-old son
following what police say was an "unfortunate freak" accident
Monday night in a Malton trucking yard.
Sebastian KOSIBA died instantly when he was crushed by a wheel
of a tractor being driven by his father Jan in a yard on Cardiff
Blvd. in the area of Derry and Dixie Rds.
"He (Jan) is in terrible shape,"
KOSIBA's widow, Dorota, 27,
said last night."This is an accident that shouldn't have happened.
We're all in grief."
The couple, originally from Poland, had two young boys, 4 and
8. "All his hobbies had to do with his kids," Dorota said. "He
loved being with them… riding bikes, playing soccer."
Police said
KOSIBA was trying to fix a rear brake problem on
a Freightliner tractor cab.
But his father "didn't realize his son was in harm's way," said
a police source.
He said the father was "driving forwards and backwards in an
attempt to unlock the brakes," when the tragedy occurred just
after 8: 30 p.m.
An autopsy concluded
KOSIBA died from blunt force trauma to his
head.
Allan FULLERTON, an executive at Canada Cartage Systems, said
the men worked as private contractors for the company. Human
Resources and Skills Development Canada and Peel police major
collision bureau are investigating.
