Duncan (1951-2007)
Duncan passed away peacefully on September 14, 2007 at Saint Mary's
of the Lake Hospital after over one and a half year battle with
brain cancer. Duncan will be missed by his wife and soul mate,
Susan of 35 years, daughter Elizabeth, as well as his brother and
sister-in-law Theo and Carol
VAN
RIJN, niece Catriana
VAN
RIJN,
and predeceased nephew Kiran
VAN
RIJN of Vancouver. He will also
be greatly missed by his cousins in Southwestern Ontario.
Duncan will be remembered notably for his work as a biologist
and interpreter for the Canadian Wildlife Service first at Wye
Marsh Wildlife Interpretation Centre in Midland, Ontario from
1973-1979 and then a Habitat Awareness Biologist and Manager
at St. Clair National Wildlife Area from 1979-1986. He was instrumental
in planning, developing, implementing and writing public awareness
programmes as well as preparing pamphlets, guide books and exhibits
for Prince Edward Point, Big Creek, Long Point and St. Clair National
Wildlife Areas. In 1986 Duncan changed his career and moved to
Kingston to attend Queen's University in the Physical Therapy
Programme and received his degree in 1990. He then went on to
receive his Masters from the School of Public Administration
(the school that his father, Donald
GOW founded,) specializing
in Health at Queen's University in 1993. He was a physiotherapist
at Kingston General Hospital from 1990-1997 and from 1997-2006
at Saint Mary's of the Lake Hospital.
Duncan was a man of many talents and interests. He was a loving
husband and father, a keen birdwatcher, naturalist, canoe tripper,
camper, artist, woodworker, photographer and writer. We will
all miss Duncan's sense of humour and innate storytelling ability.
No memorial service will be held but we wish to invite family
and Friends to a reception at James Reid Funeral Home (Kingston)
on Monday September 17, 2007, 4: 30-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made to the Algonquin Park Interpretive Program
or the Palliative Care Ward at Saint Mary's of the Lake Hospital
in Kingston.
For the past eight months Duncan has been lovingly cared for
by the professional Palliative Care Team at Saint Mary's of the
Lake Hospital. We wish to thank each and every one at Saint Mary's
who helped make Duncan's stay a happy and comfortable one.
