GAMBLE,
Erik
John
Darryl
Father, artist, musician, island boy, morel hunter, gourmand.
Born October 14, 1950, in Toronto. Died May 20 in Toronto of
diabetes, aged 56.
By Lupe RODRIGUEZ,

I first met Erik in 1967 when I was 14. His younger sister invited
me to their home on Ward's Island, a natural paradise off Toronto's
mainland.
He was always in the distance: the tall, lanky, elusive artist
whose soft long curls and rumpled good looks resembled a sexy
cross between Bob Dylan and John Lennon. As a rebellious, creative,
foreboding young man, Erik embodied the creative spirit of the
late 1960s: At the grand old age of 17, he was already both romantic
and cynical.
From his earliest years Eric defined himself through his art,
as a painter and a musician with his band, Moonfood. Not one
for systems or conventions, he left Jarvis Collegiate to attend
a specialized art program at Central Tech, followed by a series
of courses at Toronto's New School of Art.
Erik painted diligently and with passion. His large, abstract
paintings, with their luscious vivid colours, rich textures and
unique combination of organic and rectangular forms, were accomplished
works of art. By his mid-20s Erik was exhibiting at the renowned
David Mirvish Gallery in the company of major U.S. and Canadian
abstractionists. He participated in exhibitions across Canada
and the United States and his work was represented in major art
collections. He exhibited with a number of galleries, but as
time passed and trends changed Erik, like many other artists,
lost popularity with dealers, curators and the public. Although
he kept painting, he lost interest in playing the "art game."
In 1980, Erik became reacquainted with his beautiful Grade 9
sweetheart, Madeleine, at a Ward's Island dance. A true romantic,
he was totally besotted. Madeleine had a daughter, Genevieve.
They soon married and had two more daughters, Eliza and Diana.
Erik was a proud and loving father, but sadly the marriage ended
in 1985.
Many of us knew Erik the great chef and true gourmand. Following
an extended stay in Deia, an idyllic village on the island of
Majorca in Spain, Erik cooked up feasts of Spanish tapas. On
one of my last visits, we shared a picnic of thinly sliced prosciutto,
stuffed olives with anchovies and Portuguese bread with olive
oil and fresh herbs.
A part of Erik will always be with us. Whether we're taking a
ferry to Toronto Island on a breezy summer day, visiting a painting
exhibition, listening to world music, painting a watercolour,
looking for a fun dance partner or tasting the earthiness of
the morel mushrooms he hunted every spring, Erik is sure to be
there.
Lupe RODRIGUEZ is a friend of Erik.

In loving memory of the greatest Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma, Jessie
GAMMIE, who so suddenly passed away May 19, 1999.
Sweet memories will linger forever
Time cannot change them, it's true.
Years that may come cannot sever our loving remembrance of you.
In our hearts your memory lingers
Sweetly, tender and true
There is not a day, dear mom
That we do not think of you.
Please God, forgive a silent tear
A fervent wish our mom was still here.
There are others, yes we know
But she was ours, and we loved her so.
Dear God
Take a message to our mom in Heaven above
Tell her how much we miss her,
And give her all our love.
Sadly missed every day. Love you forever, Evelyn, Lindsay and Family, Mary Ellen, Wayne and Family, Linda, George and Family.
