Triple-murder at exclusive Ottawa condo
By Alex HEBERT and Kenneth
JACKSON, Sun Media, Sun., July 1,
Ottawa -- A retired federal court judge was found dead, bound
to a chair and severely beaten in his luxury condominium yesterday
along with his wife and elderly neighbour, both of whom had also
been bound.
Neighbours identified the victims as Alban
GARON, 77, his wife,
Raymonde, and Jean Marie (Claire)
BENISKOS.
The murders are Ottawa's seventh, eighth and ninth homicides
of the year, six of which have occurred in June.
Police responded to a call from a neighbour at 10: 30 a.m. yesterday
and arrived at the 10-storey luxury condominium located at 1510 Riverside
Dr. to find the bodies of the victims.
Initially, paramedics were called to the scene to deal with stab
wounds.
sources said the bodies appeared to have been there for a couple
days.
Staff
Sgt.
Monique
PERRAS gave little information about the murders
and said there were no details on a weapon, a motive for the
killings, or possible suspects.
"Ottawa police are canvassing the neighbourhood and building
to find any possible information," she said. "We have no further
information at this time."
An autopsy on the bodies -- which were still at the scene yesterday
evening -- will be conducted in the next couple days.
Robert DUFAULT, a 15-year resident of the building who knows
the GARONs, said the couple lived by themselves. He said
BENISKOS,
who lived next door to the couple, might be Raymonde's sister.
DUFAULT didn't know anyone who would want to harm the
GARONs
and said the building has tight security.
"You don't get in there unless you know somebody," he said, adding
there are surveillance cameras at the front gate, in the lobbies
and in every hallway, as well as a security guard on duty 24 hours
a day.
"Nothing ever happens here," he said.
Yesterday, it appeared police were checking the spiked fence
in front of the building, which could have served as an entry-point
for the killer or killers.
Other residents
DUFAULT spoke with were scared to leave their
condos, he said.
GARON spent the last 20 years of his career as a judge and eventually
chief justice of the Tax Court of Canada before retiring in 2004.

Triple slaying at upscale condo baffles police
Bodies of retired Ottawa judge, wife and neighbour found bound
and gagged on 10th floor
By Daniel LEBLANC with a report from Canadian Press, Page A5
Ottawa -- Ottawa Police were searching yesterday for suspects,
and a motive, in the slayings of a retired judge, his wife and
a female neighbour on the 10th floor of an exclusive condominium
tower.
"At this time, we cannot say if this was a random act or a targeted
act. We don't know," Staff Sergeant Monique
PERRAS of the Ottawa
police told reporters yesterday, a day after the three bodies
were found in the high-security Riviera condo complex near the
Rideau River.
The victims were identified as former chief justice of the Tax
Court Alban
GARON, 77, his 70-year-old wife, Raymonde, and their
neighbour, Marie-Claire
BENISKOS.
Police did not say how the three died. But according to one neighbour,
their bodies were found bound and gagged, apparently stabbed
to death, and there was no sign of a forced entry.
"It's appalling, it's just inconceivable," said neighbour Andrée
LEMIEUX-
MARQUIS, who spent part of the weekend with the man who
discovered the bodies.
According to Ms.
LEMIEUX-
MARQUIS, they were found Saturday morning
by Ms. GARON's brother, Jean-Pierre
LURETTE, who had not heard
from the GARONs for a few days. Mr.
LURETTE also lives in one
of the three Riviera towers, at 1510 Riverside Dr.
"They were discovered lying on the floor, their faces down, all
bloodied," Ms.
LEMIEUX-
MARQUIS said.
The luxurious, quiet condo towers - home to diplomats, judges
and hockey players - has several security features.
There is a security guard at the gate and the complex is studded
with cameras. The towers are surrounded by a spiked fence that
stands about 1½ metres high.
"You don't get in there unless you know somebody," said Robert
DUFAULT, who has lived in the Riviera for 15 years.
Staff Sgt.
PERRAS said the three bodies were sent to Toronto
for autopsies.
"At this point, we have no additional information in regards
to the triple homicide. We have no suspects," she said.
"The major crimes investigators have no information as to the
motive of the crime."
However, police hoped that the building's security cameras captured
information. "If there are such tapes, they will be seized to
help in this investigation," Staff Sgt.
PERRAS said.
Mr. GARON became a judge in 1988 and retired in November, 2004,
after spending four years at the helm of the Tax Court, which
enforces the Income Tax Act among other laws.
Before that, he taught at the University of Ottawa law school
part time and worked at Justice Canada, where he rose to the
rank of associate deputy minister in the 1980s.
"He was mentally agile and physically fit," Federal Court of
Appeal
Judge
J. Edgar
SEXTON told an Ottawa newspaper.
"He told me he was playing golf and enjoying his retirement."
A police officer was stationed all weekend at the Riviera's entrance,
checking identification of drivers entering the grounds.
Police took over a condo unit in the building to conduct its
investigation. Police officers were also active outside the condo
yesterday, at one point supervising a tow truck removing a car
from the parking lot.
Staff Sgt.
PERRAS said police were working with few details and
asked anyone with information to come forward.

Tom SCOTT, beloved husband of Yvonne (Tommy) passed away in Calgary

and courageous battle with cancer. Tom was a devoted and loving
father and grandfather and will be fondly remembered by his children

Columbia. He graduated in Applied Science, as a mechanical engineer,
from the University of British Columbia, in 1946. He was president
of the University's graduating class in that year and won the
Engineering Institute of Canada prize. After graduation, Tom
headed east to work in various engineering capacities for CIL

While in Shawinigan, he met his beloved Tommy in nearby Trois
Rivieres. They were married in 1952 and eventually settled in
Beaconsfield, Québec, where they formed many lifelong Friendships.
In 1971, intrigued at the potential of the oil sands and the
prospect of taking his career in a new direction, Tom moved the
family to Fort McMurray, where he managed engineering and maintenance
for Great Canadian Oil Sands, now a division of Suncor. This
was followed by a move to Edmonton in 1973 to handle the assembly
and marketing of Great Canadian Oil Sands's oil sands technology.
In 1976, he moved to Calgary to join recently formed Petro-Canada,
serving on the Syncrude Management Committee and on the Alsands
Executive Committee, managing the Canstar Oil Sands Project,

Heavy Oil. In 1978, he was made a Life Member of the Association
of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.
Tom was an enthusiastic golfer and bridge player. He was a long
term member of the Earl Grey Golf Club, where he regularly joined
the 'Hustlers,' and had many dear Friends. Tom's family would
