LARSEN,
Doctor
Donn
Dr. Donn LARSEN was born in Copenhagen, on December 4, 1927,
and died of cancer on May 15, 2007, in Vancouver. Donn was an
Eagle Scout who prided himself on thinking outside the box long
before that term was coined. Donn was passionate about business
and negotiations, beginning as a black marketeer and business
entrepreneur when just a teenager in occupied Denmark. He was
an Industrial Designer and, after immigrating to Canada, operated
Donn Larsen Office Interiors Ltd. It was an innovative and successful
firm specializing in industrial and furniture design, office
space planning and interior construction. Donn was elected a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, England, and was
appointed as an Honorary Member of the Registered Interior Designer
Institute of Alberta in 1983. After retiring from his business,
Donn continued consulting in the design field, became a mentor
to many aspiring business people, and volunteered his unique
and spirited efforts to a number of organizations. Donn was the
Danish Consul for Edmonton from 1977-1998, receiving the Order
of the Dannebro from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for his long
and dedicated service. Donn was first a member, and then the
Chairperson, of the Governing Council of Athabasca University,
from 1981-1992. After extensive travel and consultations with
other distance learning institutions, Donn received an honorary
doctorate in Business Administration from Ramkhamhaeng University
in Thailand. He was the first non-Thai to be so honored. Governor-General
Adrienne Clarkson honored Donn's commitment and service by awarding
him a Grant of Arms in 1999. Donn also received much recognition
for his contributions to international humanitarian projects
and other public service. A lifelong learner, Donn was always
eager to expand and share his knowledge, and promoted innovation
in education. Donn was an accomplished pianist, who passionately
believed that music was a necessary part of life. Donn was eccentric,
brilliant, and didn't suffer fools gladly. Donn and his wife
Ella loved entertaining, and hosted many wonderful parties in
their Old Glenora home in Edmonton. Donn and Ella also kept an
apartment in the West End of Vancouver since 1970, and retired
there in 2001. Donn and Ella were married for over 53 years.
She was his partner in everything and his number one supporter.
Sadly, Ella's illness with Alzheimer's' Disease separated them
prematurely. Predeceased by his parents and nephew, Per
CHRISTENSEN
Jr., Donn is survived by Ella, now a resident of Yaletown House
in Vancouver, and many nieces and nephews, Friends and colleagues.
He will particularly be missed by niece Dorte
PITTAWAY, great-niece
Margot PITTAWAY, nephew Paul
CHRISTENSEN
(Kim
ROTHERY,) and companion
Marion ROLSTON. No service by request, as Donn would much rather
have a party than a funeral. Flowers gratefully declined, but
donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
Donn loved telling stories, so please share a story and offer
a final Skol!

LUGSDIN, Lilie Anine "Chris" (née
CHRISTENSEN)
With much regret the family announces the passing of Lilie on
October 29, 2007 at Toronto Grace Hospital in her 91st year.
Lilie was born on September 28, 1917 in Edmonton, Alberta. Her
parents, Niels
CHRISTENSEN and Marie Sophie
(LAURSEN,) had emigrated
from Denmark in 1911. The youngest of the large family, she is
predeceased by her sister Sophie and her seven brothers; Christian,
Ernst, Werner, Carl, Ewald, Herbert, and Heino
CHRISTENSEN. Through
the years she was a wonderful aunt and great- aunt and will be
fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and their children.
Lilie graduated as a registered nurse from the Royal Alexandra
Hospital, Edmonton in 1941. She practiced her chosen profession
with great dedication working initially in western Canada in
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and then Edmonton and Lamont, Alberta.
During this period she was also active teaching several courses
in the student nursing program. Moving east to Toronto in 1947
she became more focused on medical social work. She contributed
significantly to the development of social service departments
at Wellesley, Hillcrest, and North York General hospitals. After
an eventful and rewarding career in nursing she retired from
North York in 1982.
As an educational and leisure pursuit in life Lilie was an avid
traveler. Over the years, often with her sister Sophie and other
groups of Friends, she visited many fascinating and out-of-the-ordinary
locales around the globe. Photos, maps, and lively descriptive
narratives were always carefully edited in keepsake albums for
captivated Friends and relatives at home.
She lived for the past 22 years at Christie Gardens Seniors Apartments
near Christie and Dupont streets in Toronto and thoroughly enjoyed
the many close Friendships she made there. In an exhilarating
turn of events, she met and then married another resident, W. Ross
LUGSDIN in September 1986. The two were a delightful couple and
took great pleasure and an active leadership role in the club
and social activities at Christie Gardens. However, their particular
joy over the succeeding years was to spend the summer months
at their charming cottage on Little Hawk Lake in the scenic Haliburton,
Ontario area. She is predeceased by Ross who passed away in September 2006
at age 101. Lilie received much support and care from her step-sons
Gordon and James
LUGSDIN and their families and will be lovingly
remembered by them.
In accordance with Lilie's wishes, cremation has taken place.
There will be no funeral home visitation or service. A private
family committal service will take place at a later date in Edmonton,
Alberta.
If desired, a memorial donation to the Toronto Grace Hospital
Palliative Care Unit, or the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative
Care at Mount Sinai Hospital Toronto, or a charity of your choice
would be appreciated. Condolences may be forwarded through Morley

grateful to our dad for teaching us to have the courage to love,
the importance of family and the constant reminder to keep life
simple as Dad's poem so eloquently illustrates… I am becoming
simplified. To become less is better. I yearn to be free of matter.
I want liberation from my senses, from all bodily pretenses.
From achievement, from pain and pleasure: from time, space and
matter. Simple is better. We love you Dad! Friends may call at
