Wiarton's Tom
NORRIS dies at 68
Entrepreneur had drive to help others
By Tara BOWIE,
Wednesday,
June 06, 2007
A man who Friends and family said had a life ambition to help
others died suddenly Monday at his home in Wiarton.
Tom NORRIS, described as an icon, a pillar in the community,
an entrepreneur, a hard worker and a loving family man, died
of a heart attack at 68.
For more than 40 years Mr.
NORRIS raised money for a variety
of causes including the Wiarton hospital, Owen Sound hospital,
Easter Seals and the Gateway Haven seniors' home in Wiarton.
He would have celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary with wife
Gail in October. He was a proud father to six daughters and grandfather
to 10 grandchildren, she said.
Her husband didn't have hobbies, Gail
NORRIS said. His biggest
interest was helping the community.
Using his influence and determination, Mr.
NORRIS helped raise
more than $5 million to help build the Wiarton hospital, she
said.
Bill WALKER, a member of the Healthy Connections hospital fundraising
campaign, regarded Mr.
NORRIS as a mentor whose Friendship spanned
more than 25 years.
"He's the type of guy that if he set his mind to it, no matter
what it was, he would see it through," he said.
Mr. NORRIS's passion and determination helped save the hospital
during the 1990s when the provincial Conservative government
considered shutting it down, said longtime friend A.J.
LEEDER.
Rallying more than 2,000 people in the Wiarton Arena, picking
some up by bus, Mr.
NORRIS lit a fire in people to save the hospital,
LEEDER said.
Mr. NORRIS came up with the idea for Snowarama/Skiarama, which
later became Winterama, in 1975. The fundraiser has helped raise
money for Easter Seals and other children's causes.
He had a special place in his heart for children,
LEEDER said.
He was a Rotary Club member, sat on the Wiarton recreation committee
and was a founding member of the local Crime Stoppers organization.
He brought celebrities including wrestler Whipper Billy Watson
and performers Charley Pride, Anne Murray, Tommy Hunter and Stompin'
Tom Connors to the area for fundraising events.
At 16, with only a Grade 8 education and help from mentor Don
BUMSTEAD,
NORRIS bought his first car and started a taxi business.
That one cab turned into a fleet, which he sold to buy a bus.
He grew his bus business into a 155-vehicle line.
NORRIS operated Owen Sound's transit system for the city when
he died.
"Most unexpected outcome from a child with a limited chance.
He took it and bloomed and blossomed,"
LEEDER said of his friend's
life.
Member of provincial parliament Bill Murdoch's office is near
the Owen Sound bus terminal. The two knew each other for more
that 25 years and yelled at each other over the fence from time
to time.
"The community will really miss him," Murdoch said. "He was simply
the most generous person, always willing to help people."
Wiarton Mayor Gwen
GILBERT knew
NORRIS all her life and said
it would be hard to find someone else who gave so much to his
community.
"His legacy of hard work and determination will live on forever,"
she said.
