Jim attended the University of Toronto where he studied political
science, social legislation and economics, graduating with first
class honours in 1943. He served as second lieutenant in the
Canadian Army in an intelligence capacity from 1943 to 1945.
After the war, Jim joined the Department of External Affairs.
He served briefly in Paris, then at the Canadian Military Mission
in Berlin, Germany, where he met his future wife, Magdalene Selma
BOEDDINGHAUS.
They married on November 26, 1949. Jim worked for
External Affairs until 1970 and served in New York City (1953-1957),
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1959-1963), Karachi and Islamabad, Pakistan
(1965-1967), and Berne, Switzerland (1967-1970). In 1970, Jim
began work in the Department of Secretary of State and later
for the National Capital Commission. He retired in the late 1970s.
In 1981, he and Magda built themselves a winter home in Fort
Myers which they enjoyed for two decades and sold in 2001.
During the last years of his life, Jim was plagued by many illnesses,
including dementia, kidney failure, and respiratory disease.
In September 2006, Jim and Magda left their Ottawa home of 50 years
and moved into the Colonel By Retirement Residence. Jim's family
thanks all those who attended to his care at the Ottawa hospital
and at Colonel By.
Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse,
Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa, on Sunday, December 16th,
between 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be
held on Monday, December 17th at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist
Church, 140 Laurier Ave. West, Ottawa.

many Friends. Wanda exhibited a most inquisitive mind and was
an active supporter of the Hamilton Arts Community until her
