HERZ, Robert (a.k.a. "Robin")
Passed away peacefully at his North York home, Saturday, June 9, 2007 in his 77th year, born in Brno, Czechoslovakia. Survived by his loving daughter Liza HERZ- MacINNIS and her husband Craig MacINNIS of Toronto, nephew Michael HERZ and wife Helga of Waterloo, nephew Steve HERZ and wife Nicola of Calgary, sisters-in-law Ingrid HERZ of Toronto and Elizabeth Charlotte BAHNSON of Copenhagen. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Renata, who died in 2005 with Robin by her side, and by his brother Macek, who died in 1984. Remembered fondly by his beloved madrich Franta MAIER and 'The Boys,' the tight-knit and fiercely loyal group of Holocaust survivors who found themselves, during World War 2, incarcerated as children by the Nazis at Terezin and later at Auschwitz, forging lifelong bonds that remain unbroken despite geographical distance and illness.
Moving to Canada as a war orphan, Robert met Renata, another Czech emigree, in Toronto in 1955. They were married six months later. He lived a happy, productive life as an industrial accountant, refusing, in both attitude and deed, to let his wartime experiences conquer his spirit. As one of the profiled subjects in Thelma Gruenbaum's poignant 2004 book, Nesarim: Child Survivors of Terezin, Robert offered his musings on the war's lasting effects: 'Whatever it was, good, bad or terrible, this was the greatest, biggest thing that ever happened to us. Of our family, only my brother and I came back. I always say, I don't need to buy a lottery ticket. I won the lottery the first time.'
A memorial service will be held for family at a later date.
